Sexual attitudes and behaviors among medical students in Dokuz Eylul university, Turkey

Iranian students' attitudes toward premarital sex, marriage, and family in different college majors

ObjectiveThis study is performed to examine the attitudes regarding marriage, family, and premarital sex among the students of different majors. Participants: Four hundred fifty-seven students from four majors studying Medical Sciences, Arts, Humanities, and Mathematics/Engineering within the age range of 18- to 24-year old. Method: Participants were selected from different universities in Tehran using stratified nonprobability sampling method. Attitudes of our participants were examined using the premarital sexual, marital, child-rearing, and family attitude Survey and demographic variables, including major, age, gender, religious beliefs, family socioeconomic level, and marital status were evaluated. Results: Most of the results of the survey showed significant differences between different majors. Art students were open to premarital sex more than other students and believed that premarital sex would cause no harm in reputation for females. By contrast, Medical sciences students had the highest agreement regarding the bad influence on the reputation of females because of premarital sex and also regarding men's tendency to virgin girls. Art students mostly approved the acceleration of the divorce process while the highest disapproval in this regard was reported from Medical sciences students. Conclusion: Art students' beliefs about premarital sex were more liberal, while Medical sciences students' beliefs in this matter were more conservative.

Prevalence of Problematic Pornography Use and Attitude Toward Pornography Among the Undergraduate Medical Students

Background:

There are mixed views on categorizing pornography as addiction or as a sexual compulsivity or a subset of hypersexual behavior. Due to rise in the Internet access and technologies, the possibilities of conduit for sexual interactions, online pornography, and other type of repetitive behaviors have increased.

Aims:

The current study aimed to find the prevalence of problematic pornography use and attitude toward pornography.

Methodology:

A cross-sectional study was carried out among 1,050 undergraduate medical students to assess the prevalence of pornography addiction and attitude toward pornography. A Google document containing structured questionnaire in 3 different parts: (a) demographic details of students, (b) Problematic Pornography Consumption Scale, and (c) attitudes toward pornography scale. This Google document was shared with all the undergraduate students through email address and WhatsApp group. Participants who did not respond to the questionnaire were sent 3 reminders at a gap of 3 days. The responses were recorded in Excel sheet and analyzed using Epi-Info software.

Results:

Prevalence of problematic pornography use among participants was 12.5%. There was statistically high prevalence of problematic pornography use among male participants ( P < .001), nearly daily consumption of pornography per week ( P < .001) and more than 20 min of consumption per day ( P <.001). A statistical significant negative correlation was shown (r = −0.483, P < .001) between age of first exposure to pornography and problematic pornography consumption score. Males, being in a relationship, and those with problematic pornography use had higher score on attitude toward pornography scale.

Conclusion:

It is important to provide education to students about the effects of problematic pornography use because there is negative correlation between exposure to pornographic imagery on the Internet and levels of genital and sexual esteem; pornography use was associated with poor quality of life, and depressive and anxiety symptoms. Gender-specific discussions so as to promote sexual health and participation in media literacy education would be beneficial for young people in changing attitude toward pornography.

Connaissances, attitudes et pratiques des étudiants en médecine en matière de sexualité

La sexualité est un aspect central de la personne humaine qui, devant des problèmes sexuels, va fréquemment se tourner vers une source qu'elle considère compétente et bien informée, son médecin. Les objectifs de notre étude étaient d’évaluer les connaissances, les attitudes et les pratiques des étudiants en médecine en termes de sexualité et d’identifier les principaux déterminants du manque de connaissances basiques à ce sujet. Notre étude était descriptive et analytique, menée auprès des étudiants à la faculté de médecine de Sfax (Tunisie). Le questionnaire, rempli individuellement et de manière anonyme par chaque étudiant, recueillait les données sociodémographiques, les connaissances en matière de sexualité ainsi que leurs sources, les attitudes adoptées par les étudiants vis-à-vis de la sexualité et les pratiques sexuelles. La note totale moyenne relative aux questions de sexologie était de 11,05/20. Les facteurs corrélés à un score moyen élevé aux questions de sexologie étaient le sexe masculin (p=0,003), le statut de marié (p=0,012), le niveau socio-économique élevé (p=0,02), les livres comme source d’informations (p=0,041) et la présence de pratiques sexuelles (p<0,001). Ces pratiques étaient toutes significativement plus fréquentes chez les étudiants de sexe masculin (p<0,001). Des lacunes dans les connaissances en matière de sexualité existent chez les étudiants en médecine, du moins dans certains de ses aspects. Un programme d'enseignement complet et uniforme sur la sexualité humaine, surtout dans ses aspects physiologiques, peut sensiblement améliorer la capacité des futurs médecins à fournir des soins optimaux à leurs patients.

Student Attitudes About Reproductive Health in Public Universities: A Cross-Sectional Study

BACKGROUND

Determine attitude of young people to reproductive health issues can somewhat predict their behavior in this area. This helps us in planning future on reproductive health. The aim of this study was to determine the attitude of reproductive health and related factors among Iranian students in public universities in Iran.

METHOD

A cross-sectional study was carried out. The tool was developed based on a literature review to find out about reproductive health attitudes and sociodemographic factors associated. The face and content validity of the questionnaire was performed using expert judgment. Cronbach's coefficient and test-retest were used to determine the reliability. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences software by independent t test, ANOVA, and multiple linear regression.

RESULTS

Out of 461 respondents, the majority of students were nonmedical sciences (81.1%). The main sources of information for reproductive health awareness were the media (40%); 54.9% disagreed with having premarital sex in both sexes, while only 36% agreed to postpone sexual activity until marriage in order to prevent sexually transmitted diseases. Moreover, 64% believed that contraception would cause infertility in the future. The majority found the need for reproductive health services and education essential for single youth. Multiple regression showed a poor reproductive health attitude in nonmedical students, families who did not talk about boy-girl relationships, as well as in satellite users and hookah consumers.

CONCLUSION

The students' level of attitude on reproductive health was not satisfactory. Intervention programs related to reproductive health taking into account the cultural aspects of Iranian society can protect young people from risky behaviors and unwanted pregnancies by creating a positive attitude.

Sex Knowledge and Attitude Among Medical Interns in a Tertiary Care Hospital Attached to Medical College in Ahmedabad, Gujarat

Introduction: Sexuality is one of the most basic human experiences. But in India, there are many myths and misconceptions about sexuality. Poor sex knowledge causes many of these problems. Liberal attitude without adequate knowledge is harmful. As a future frontier of health care, medical interns play an important role to improve knowledge and attitude. But, in India, very few students can communicate about sexuality, and friends and pornographic materials remain as common sources of sex knowledge, which are unreliable.

Aims: To asses sex knowledge and attitude among medical interns and find its correlation with sociodemographic details.

Materials and Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 60 interns using a Sex Knowledge and Attitude Questionnaire II (SKAQ II). Data was analyzed by MS Excel for Windows. P < .05 was considered statistically significant.

Results: Mean age of interns was 22 ± 0.89 yrs. Mean score of sex knowledge of males was 25.47 ± 4.44, whereas that of females was 24.88 ± 4.77. Females had more knowledge of menstrual cycle and conception. Males had better knowledge regarding sexual acts in adolescence and its effects on marriage life. Sex knowledge and attitude were moderately correlated. Males had a liberal attitude, especially about abortion and masturbation.

Conclusion: The result revealed a need to improve sex knowledge and attitude among medical interns through sex education and adding sex education sessions in the teaching curriculum. Better knowledge and positive attitudes toward sex will be beneficial to the interns and the whole society.

MSW student perceptions of sexual health as relevant to the profession: Do social work educational experiences matter?

Many social work clients are at an increased risk for negative outcomes related to sexual behavior, including unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). However, there is a dearth of literature on social work student experiences with these topics in social work classrooms and their perceptions about the topic's relevance to their practice. The purpose of this study is to explore relationships between experiences with STIs and contraception as topics in social work education and practica experiences on student perceptions toward sexual health as a relevant topic for social work. Among a national sample of MSW students (N = 443), experiences with STIs and contraception as topics in practica was significantly related to perceptions toward sexual health's relevance to social work. Findings and implications are discussed.

Youth Sexual Health: Sexual Knowledge, Attitudes, and Behavior Among Students at a University in Turkey

INTRODUCTION

To determine sexual attitudes, behavior, and knowledge of Namik Kemal University (NKU) students about sexual health and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

METHOD

A sample representing 10% of the undergraduate population of NKU in 2009-2010, was studied. Of 1,500 questionnaires distributed, 1,314 (87.6%) were filled out.

RESULTS

The mean age of the respondents (52.9% male) was 20.07±1.75 years. The rate of students who had received sexual health education was 32.0%, and 15.3% had previously used a sexual health service. Eleven percent of the female students and 50.3% of the male students had had sexual intercourse. The average age of initial sexual intercourse was 16.83±2.07 years. Of the students who had had sexual intercourse, 46.6% reported that they did not use any contraception method. The most preferred method was condoms (37.6%). The rate of contraceptive use was 58.7% in sexually educated students and 43.9% in those not educated (p=.004). The most well-known STI was AIDS (96.5%), with sexually educated students giving higher rates of correct answers about STIs (p<.05).

CONCLUSION

The students who had received sexual health education were more knowledgeable about vital consequences of STI's, even though it is not sufficient, than sexually active students. Awareness of safe sexual practices and changes in behavior, in particular, promoting condom use should be established in higher risk youths. Deficiencies in knowledge could be addressed by adding a sexual healthtraining component to the university curriculum, and unmet requirements could be met by reorganizing medico-social centers in universities.

Attitudes of Lebanese university students towards surgical hymen reconstruction

Many cultural and religious beliefs place virginity at a high level of social significance, in that women who lose their virginity before marriage may face humiliation, ostracism, divorce, and extreme violence. This led to an increase in the demand for virginity restoration through surgical hymen reconstruction among these cultures. However, data regarding the acceptance of hymenoplasty in societies that consider sexuality a taboo are scarce. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the effects of gender and religion on sexual attitudes towards hymenoplasty, premarital sex, and virginity in a sample of 600 Lebanese university students. Our findings showed that approval of hymenoplasty was low among participants regardless of gender (25.7 % men vs. 19.1 % women) and religious affiliations (22.5 % Muslims vs. 22.3 % Christians). Arguments for rejection were rooted in moral ethics and personal convictions: "form of deceiving and cheating" (80.7 %) and "betrayal of honesty in the relationship" (80.4 %). Reasons for acceptance included: personal belief in "women's rights, autonomy, and freedom" (72.2 %) and "physical harm and death" (63.5 %).Male participants were more likely to approve premarital coital sex than females (61.0 vs. 27.3 %). Muslims were also more likely to reject marrying a non-virgin than Christians (39.9 vs. 18.0 %). Female participants expressed more tolerance towards marrying a non-virgin male partner (78.3 vs. 57.3 %). Low acceptance of hymenoplasty among Lebanese university students was found to be related to moral ethics and personal convictions independently from gender and religious affiliation. Differences in sexual attitudes towards premarital coital sex and virginity, however, were more significantly influenced by culture and religion.

Knowledge and attitude on sex among medical students of a Malaysian university: a comparison study

INTRODUCTION

The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between clinical/socio-demographic factors with knowledge and attitude on sex among medical students of the National University of Malaysia (UKM).

METHODS

A cross-sectional study assessing 452 students using a self-administered questionnaire of knowledge and attitude was performed and had a response rate of 80%.

RESULTS

The majority of respondents were Malays (56%), females (57.5%), lived in urban areas (66.4%), had a median family income of RM3000 and perceived themselves as moderately religious (60%). The overall score on knowledge about sex was 21.7 of 35 (a higher score indicates better knowledge about sex). It was noted that 73.2% of students felt that they did not receive adequate training in medical school to deal with patients' sexuality and sexual problems, while 51.5% felt uncomfortable talking to patients about these issues. Students in the clinical year were more knowledgeable than those in pre-clinical years (22.67 versus 20.71, P < 0.001). No significant differences were found in terms of their backgrounds, such as being from urban or rural areas (P = 0.349) and between genders (P = 0.286). Only 54.9% of students had a satisfactory level of knowledge on sex (>22 marks [median score]).

DISCUSSION

The students' attitude on sex was considered conservative as the majority of them disagreed on premarital sex, masturbation, abortion, homosexuality and oral sex. Gender and religiosity have a large influence on attitudes on controversial sexual issues, whereas clinical status plays a small role. Knowledge on sex among UKM medical students is inadequate and their attitudes on sex are considered conservative. Integration of sexual medicine and health modules in the medical curriculum is crucial for students to more effectively address patients' sexual problems and promote non-judgmental attitudes towards patients.

Sexual activity, knowledge and contraceptive usage by gender among university students in Turkey

OBJECTIVE

To assess sexual activity and contraceptive knowledge and practice by gender among university students.

METHODS

Descriptive and cross-sectional study conducted at Ege University, Turkey, with 1000 volunteering students. Data collection was stopped when 500 students of each gender had participated.

RESULTS

Of the surveyed students, 50.3% (27.4% female, 73.2% male) reported having had sexual intercourse; the mean age at first sexual intercourse was 18.4 years for girls and 16.9 years for boys. We found that 44.5% of female and 30.6% of male students failed to use contraception at their first coitus, whereas 2.2% of female and 13.7% of male students failed to do so at their most recent intercourse. The rate of condom usage for students' first sexual encounter was 50.1% (35.8% female, 55.5% male) and was 67.8% (70.1% female, 66.9% male) at their most recent intercourse. Abortion was mentioned by 43.9% of female and 39.2% of male students as a method of preventing pregnancy after unprotected coitus.

CONCLUSION

Male Turkish students had started sexual relations at a younger age but had less often unprotected first sex than female students.

Sexuality related attitudes and behaviors of Turkish university students

In this study, sexual attitudes and behaviors of Turkish university students were explored by taking many influential agents both at the distal and the proximal levels into consideration. A total of 563 students from three universities located in three cities completed a questionnaire that assessed their virginity status, first intercourse, sexual permissiveness, pornography usage, endorsement of traditional sexual double standards, and the perception of parental attitudes about sexuality. The results showed that women and students from rural areas were more traditional and conservative in their attitudes and behaviors regarding sexuality. The perception of maternal restriction about sexuality was related to sexual conservatism, negative affective reaction at first coitus, and endorsing traditional sexual double standards. The results are discussed in terms of various degrees of influences originating from proximal and distal variables in the Turkish context.

Comportamiento sexual, practices de riesgo y anticoncepción en jóvenes universitarios de Alicante

OBJECTIVE

To identify sexual behavior, contraception, and unsafe practices in students attending Alicante University, as well as to explore gender differences.

METHOD

We performed a cross-sectional descriptive study in Alicante University. Participants consisted of 184 students studying for a Diploma in Human Nutrition and Dietetics or for a Degree in Economics in the 2004-2005 academic year. Data on information sources, knowledge and use of family planning centers, and sexual experience were gathered using a self-administered anonymous and confidential questionnaire.

RESULTS

The mean age was 21.6 years and 140 participants were women. Information sources on sexuality and contraception were related to the students' social and educational environment. The age of beginning coital sexual relations was 17.8 years. The most frequent sexual practices were vaginal coitus and oral sex. Nearly 30% of the students (n = 51) used the postcoital pill. Men started sexual relations earlier and had a greater number of partners than women. The percentage of women who needed to be in love to maintain sexual relations was higher than that in men. A greater percentage of men had had sexual relations under the effect of drugs.

CONCLUSIONS

There is a need to improve awareness of responsible sex in the university setting. The gender differences associated with risk behaviors and the use of contraceptive methods, which influence the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies, should be taken into account.
