Assessment of the validity and reliability of a questionnaire on knowledge and attitude of general practitioners about andropause

Aging effects in adrenal cortex of male Mongolian gerbil: A model for endocrine studies

The adrenal gland produces steroid hormones that act in the homeostasis of organisms. During aging, alterations in the hormonal balance affect the adrenal glands, but these have not yet been fully described due to the lack of adequate animal models. The adrenal gland of the Mongolian gerbil has a morphology similar to the primate's adrenal gland, which makes it a possible animal model for endocrine studies. Therefore, the current study aimed to study the morphophysiology of the adrenal gland under the effect of aging. For this purpose, males Meriones unguiculatus, aged three, six, nine, twelve, and fifteen months were used. Morphometric, immunohistochemical, and hormonal analyses were performed. It was observed that during aging the adrenal gland presents hypertrophy of the fasciculata and reticularis zones. Lipofuscin accumulation was observed during aging, in addition to changes in proliferation, cell death, and cell receptors. The analyses also showed that the gerbil presents steroidogenic enzymes and the production of steroid hormones, such as DHEA, like that found in humans. The data provide the first comprehensive assessment of the morphophysiology of the Mongolian gerbil adrenal cortex during aging, indicating that this species is a possible experimental model for studies of the adrenal gland and aging.

The severity of andropause symptoms and its relationship with social well-being among retired male nurses: a preliminary cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Andropause is a syndrome that occurs due to decreased androgen levels in men. Various aspects of health, such as social well-being, can affect andropause status during men's retirement. This study aimed to determine the severity of andropause symptoms and its relationship with social well-being among retired male nurses.

METHODS

This preliminary cross-sectional study was conducted on 284 retired male nurses in Ardabil (northwest of Iran). The participants were selected through the census sampling method. Data were collected using a demographic information form, the Male Andropause Symptoms Self-Assessment Questionnaire (MASSQ), and the Social Well-Being Scale (SWBS). Data were analyzed using SPSS software (version 22.0).

RESULTS

The study found that the overall mean scores of the severity of andropause symptoms and social well-being among retired male nurses were 57.24 ± 12.62 (range = 35-91) and 94.54 ± 12.77 (range = 75-123), respectively. The highest and lowest mean scores between dimensions of social well-being were related to social contribution (20.26 ± 2.47) and social acceptance (15.26 ± 2.77), respectively. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that subscales of social well-being, age, marital status, and spouse's menopause were predictors of the severity of andropause symptoms among retired male nurses. The selected predictors accounted for 53.1% of the total variance in severity of andropause symptoms (F = 36.613, p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

The results showed a moderate to severe prevalence of andropause among retired male nurses and a significant association between andropause and social well-being. The study suggests further research to examine sexual orientation and other factors that may affect andropause in retired male nurses.

Validity and Reliability of the Turkish Male Andropause Symptoms Self-Assessment Questionnaire

Objective

This study was planned to examine the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Male Andropause Symptoms Self-Assessment Questionnaire (MASS-Q).

Materials and Methods

One hundred and twenty-five men with a mean age of 54.24 ± 6.51 years participated in the study. First, participants' demographic data were recorded. Then, the MASS-Q was adapted to Turkish. The assess the reliability and validity of the Turkish MASS-Q, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and criterion validity analyses were administered. For the reliability test, the scale was readministered 1 week later. Test-retest reliability was examined with the intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). Internal consistency was defined by Cronbach's alpha. Regarding the validity analysis, content validity was determined according to expert opinions. For criterion validity, the Aging Male Symptoms-Questionnaire (AMS-Q) was used.

Results

According to the results of the analysis, the ICC values between the test-retest scores of the total and subdimensions (sexual, somatic, psychic, and behavior) of the MASS-Q were found to be 0.987, 0.939, 0.973, 0.951, and 0.887, respectively (P < 0.05). Cronbach's alpha values of the total and subdimensions (sexual, somatic, psychic, and behavior) of the MASS-Q were calculated as 0.924, 0.870, 0.747, 0.865, and 0.667, respectively. According to the ICC values obtained, it was found that the MASS-Q had a high degree of reliability. According to the internal consistency results, the sexual and psychic subdimensions were found to be quite reliable, whereas the somatic and behavioral subdimensions were found to be sufficiently reliable. According to the criterion validity results, a very high and high correlations were found between the AMS-Q scores and the MASS-Q scores (r = 0.636-0.938, P = 0.001).

Conclusion

As a result, it was determined that the Turkish version of the MASS-Q is a valid and reliable scale that can be used in Turkish men.

Job requirements and physical demands (JRPD) questionnaire: cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric evaluation in Iranian Army personnel with chronic low back pain

BACKGROUND

Biomechanical risk factors have been identified as the main predisposing factor of chronic low back pain (CLBP), especially in Army personnel. The Job Requirements and Physical Demands (JRPD) questionnaire has been developed to assess the biomechanical exposures related to CLBP. Examining the biomechanical risk factors could prevent CLBP. This study aimed to translate and cross-culturally adapt the JRPD into Persian and assess its psychometric properties among Iranian male Army personnel with CLBP.

METHODS

In this cross-sectional study, the content validation of the JRPD was assessed after translating to Persian. The Persian JRPD was administered to 198 male Army personnel with CLBP, with an interval of 7 days, to assess test-retest reliability, including Cronbach's α, intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM), and minimal detectable change at 95% confidence interval (MDC_95%). Scores of the Persian JRPD were correlated with the scores of visual analog scale (VAS), Borg's category-ratio (CR10) scale, general health questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28), and physical functioning (PF₁ and PF₂) subscale of the 12-item short-form health survey (SF-12) to assess convergent validity using Spearman correlation for a priori hypotheses.

RESULTS

The Persian JRPD had good content validity evidenced by the higher content validity index (> 0.70). The questionnaire had a significant positive negligible to weak correlation with the VAS (rho = 0.27; p < 0.001), Borg's CR10 scale (rho = 0.19; p = 0.009), and the total score of GHQ-28 and its domains (rho ≤0.34; p < 0.05); and significant negative weak correlation with PF₂ (rho = - 0.27; p < 0.001) and significant negative moderate correlation with PF₁ (rho = - 0.35; p < 0.001), thus confirming the priori hypotheses (89%, 8/9). The internal consistency and ICC (α = 0.91; ICC = 0.80) were highly adequate, with SEM and MDC_95% of 7.91 and 21.3 respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

The JRPD was successfully adapted into Persian and had adequate psychometric properties in terms of content and convergent validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability. The questionnaire is found useable to assess the CLBP-related biomechanical exposures in Iranian male Army personnel.

Differences in male climacteric symptoms with aging among rotating night shift workers

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to clarify the actual status of male climacteric symptoms in rotating night shift workers and how to cope with the symptoms.

METHODS

We planned a self-administered questionnaire survey in male rotating night shift workers. Male climacteric symptoms were evaluated by using the Aging Males' Symptoms (AMS) scale.

RESULTS

Of 1891 questionnaires that were sent, 1561 were collected. There were significant differences in total AMS scores among the age groups. In all age groups, there were high proportions of men with increased need for sleep and often feeling tired (64.9%) and decrease in muscular strength (60.7%). There were significant differences in AMS scores for somatic symptoms between men in their 20 s and those in their 40 s or 50 s and between men in their 30 s and those in their 50 s and in AMS scores for sexual symptoms between men in their 20 s and those in their 30 s, 40 s, 50 s or 60 s, between men in their 30 s and those in their 40 s, 50 s or 60 s and between men in their 40 s and those in their 50 s or 60 s.

CONCLUSION

Significant age-dependent differences are found in somatic symptoms and sexual symptoms in rotating night shift workers.

Prevalence of andropause among Iranian men and its relationship with quality of life

INTRODUCTION

Andropause is a complicated process in men's life which can negatively affect their quality of life in both physical and psychological dimensions.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of andropause among Iranian men age 40-85 years and its relationship with quality of life.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This was a cross-sectional study among 393 men attending ten urban healthcare centers in Ilam province in southwestern Iran. Study participants were recruited using proportional random sampling. The Male andropause symptoms self-assessment questionnaire (MASSQ) and SF-12 were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22 (Chicago, IL).

RESULTS

The mean (SD) of participants scores in MASSQ was 57.46 (17.56). Only 61 (15.5%) men were classified at "don't need testosterone" category based on MASSQ. There were significant associations between the eight aspects of HRQoL and the andropause severity (p < .001). Older age, lower education, having depression, coronary heart disease, and incontinence were associated with increased odds of andropause (p < .05).

CONCLUSION

This study confirmed findings of previous studies regarding andropause and its relationship with men's quality of life. Future studies in this topic are needed to discover all the factors that may influence men andropause.
