Risk factors for stroke recurrence in young patients with first-ever ischemic stroke: A meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

At present, the incidence rate of ischemic stroke in young people is increasing yearly, and the age of onset is increasingly young. Therefore, primary and secondary prevention of ischemic stroke in young people, especially secondary prevention, is particularly crucial.

AIM

We aimed to comprehensively evaluate risk factors for stroke recurrence in first-ever young ischemic stroke (YIS) patients.

METHODS

The meta-analysis was used to quantitatively analyze the research results on risk factors for stroke recurrence in first-ever YIS patients both domestically and internationally. Stata12.0 software was used for heterogeneity testing, publication bias analysis, sensitivity analysis, and the calculation of combined odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals.

RESULTS

The odds ratio (OR) values of the relationship between hypertension and hyperlipidemia and recurrence of first-ever YIS were 1.54 (1.05-2.26) and 1.12 (1.00-1.25), respectively. The OR values of male sex, type 2 diabetes, smoking, drinking and YIS recurrence were 1.66 (0.98-2.79), 1.01 (0.64-1.59), 1.21 (0.83-1.76), and 1.28 (0.82-2.53), respectively. The relationship between male sex, type 2 diabetes, smoking, drinking and YIS recurrence was ambiguous.

CONCLUSION

Hypertension and hyperlipidemia are important risk factors for stroke recurrence in first-ever YIS patients, and active intervention should be taken.

Combining effect of camellia oil and squalene on hyperlipidemia-induced reproductive damage in male rats

Introduction

Camellia oil (CO), a common edible oil in China, contains a variety of active ingredients. In this study, we explored the combining effect and optimal feeding time of CO and squalene on hyperlipemia-induced reproductive damage rats and probably provided supportive data for use of CO for health benefits.

Methods

We established the hyperlipidaemia-induced reproductive damage model, and then the successfully modeled rats were randomly classified into four groups including a model control (MC) group, a camellia oil (CO) group, a camellia oil + squalene (COS) group, and a sildenafil (SN) group, which were feeding with different subjects during days 30 and 60. The normal (NC) group was fed under the same conditions.

Results

Our results showed that compared with the MC group, the CO, COS, and SN groups could significantly decline the serum TG, TC and LDL-C levels, increase the serum testosterone levels, the sperm counts in epididymidis and organ coefficients of penises, and no pathological change in penis and testis at days 30 and 60. Compared with the pure CO, the mixture of CO and squalene could significantly enhance the effect of decreasing the concentrations of TG, TC, and LDL-C and increasing the serum testosterone level and sperm count of epididymal tail, and the results of day 30 were better than those of day 60.

Discussion

CO and squalene have a combining effect on lowering blood lipid, improving the level of testosterone and the number of epididymal tail sperm, and promoting the recovery of erectile and sexual function on hyperlipidemia-induced reproductive damage rats on day 30.

OBJECTIVES

The etiopathogenesis of Peyronie's disease (PD) remains not clearly understood. The most accepted theory attributes the histological lesions of PD to the effects of trauma to the corpora cavernosum of the penis. The aim of our study is to verify whether similar histological features exist between these two tissues, providing new evidence in favor of the traumatic theory in the etiopathogenesis of Peyronie's disease.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A prospective observational study was carried out at our institution from January 2013 to June 2018, involving patients having undergone surgery for PD and those with delayed surgery for penile trauma. Both excised PD and post-traumatic plaques were analyzed by blind pathologists with an 80kV potential acceleration electron microscope.

RESULTS

Five patients were identified with a post-traumatic plaque (Group 1) and therefore an equal number of PD patients were enrolled for Group 2. The ultrastructural characteristics of the two types of preparations were very similar. In all the samples we showed an inflammatory reaction of the structure of the tunica albuginea, a production of the disorganized extracellular matrix, a proliferation of inflammatory cells and fibroblasts. Furthermore, we have found an increase in the density and collagen deposits grouped in the extracellular space and within the fibroblasts.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings support the theory that attributes lesions and symptoms typical of PD to the effects of cavernous body trauma.
