Species Choice and Model Use: Reviving Research on Human Development

While model organisms have had many historians, this article places studies of humans, and particularly our development, in the politics of species choice. Human embryos, investigated directly rather than via animal surrogates, have gone through cycles of attention and neglect. In the past 60 years they moved from the sidelines to center stage. Research was resuscitated in anatomy, launched in reproductive biomedicine, molecular genetics, and stem-cell science, and made attractive in developmental biology. I explain this surge of interest in terms of rivalry with models and reliance on them. The greater involvement of medicine in human reproduction, especially through in vitro fertilization, gave access to fresh sources of material that fed critiques of extrapolation from mice and met demands for clinical relevance or "translation." Yet much of the revival depended on models. Supply infrastructures and digital standards, including biobanks and virtual atlases, emulated community resources for model organisms. Novel culture, imaging, molecular, and postgenomic methods were perfected on less precious samples. Toing and froing from the mouse affirmed the necessity of the exemplary mammal and its insufficiency justified inquiries into humans. Another kind of model-organoids and embryo-like structures derived from stem cells-enabled experiments that encouraged the organization of a new field, human developmental biology. Research on humans has competed with and counted on models.

Bioengineering human placentas: social implications of an advancing field

Technological advances in bioengineering, especially in microphysiological systems and organoids, are changing the way in which placental tissue is used and perceived. These advances raise important questions surrounding consent, privacy, biobanking, and research ethics. We explore emerging technologies which use placental tissue and the pressing associated bioethical concerns they raise.

Placenta Donation - The Expectant Mother's View

The placenta has been used in different facets of medicine however some low-income countries are yet to apply these uses for different reasons. A cross-sectional study of 150 expectant mothers attending antenatal clinic was conducted to determine the willingness to donate the placenta. Analysis was conducted using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 20 with a level of significance set at P ≤ .05. The mean age of the participants was 32.3 (SD±5.0) years. Almost all (98.7%) were married while 89.3% had tertiary-level education. The majority (82.7%) knew there was no connection between the placenta and baby after delivery; however, only 12.0% knew about placenta donation and 10.0% were willing to donate the placenta at delivery. About three quarters (74.0%) were unwilling to promote the donation of the placenta, most (55.0%) believed that the placenta was used for rituals, while some (19.0%) thought placenta donation would affect the child's future. Participants' occupation, 'knowledge about placenta donation and its uses' and willingness to promote donation were all significantly associated with their willingness to donate (P < .05). Willingness to donate the placenta at delivery was low in this study. Participants' occupation and their knowledge were some factors influencing willingness to donate the placenta for medical use.

Gender dynamics in the donation field: human tissue donation for research, therapy and feeding

This paper examines how gender dynamics shape human tissue donation for research and for human health. Drawing on research investigating the donation of different types of bodily tissues including blood, plasma, breastmilk, cord blood, foetal tissue and placentae we consider how and why women and men are viewed as different kinds of donors. We situate these donation practices within a broader understanding of gender difference to explain why any sociology of donation needs to take account of gender. In so doing we explore how tissue derived from the bodies of women acquires value in distinctive ways and for distinctive purposes and reasons. Within these gendered bioeconomies of donation, the supply and demand for tissue is structured by social understandings of maternity, parental responsibility, and risk, which in turn affect the experiences of donors.

Aspects of Modern Biobank Activity - Comprehensive Review

Biobanks play an increasing role in contemporary research projects. These units meet all requirements to regard them as a one of the most innovative and up-to-date in the field of biomedical research. They enable conducting wide-scale research by the professional collection of biological specimens and correlated clinical data. Pathology units may be perceived roots of biobanking. The review aims at describing the concept of biobanks, their model of function and scientific potential. It comprises the division of biobanks, sample preservation methods and IT solutions as well as guidelines and recommendations for management of a vast number of biological samples and clinical data. Therefore, appropriate standard operating procedures and protocols are outlined. Constant individualization of diagnostic process and treatment procedures creates the niche for translational units. Thus, the role of biobanks in personalized medicine was also specified. The exceptionality of biobanks poses some new ethical-legal issues which have various solutions, in each legal system, amongst the world. Finally, distribution and activity of European biobanks are mentioned.
