Predicting drowsiness-related driving events: a review of recent research methods and future opportunities

An evaluation and comparison of commercial driver sleepiness detection technology: a rapid review

Objective. Sleepiness-related motor vehicle crashes, caused by lack of sleep or driving during night-time hours, often result in serious injury or fatality. Sleepiness detection technology is rapidly emerging as a sleepiness risk mitigation strategy for drivers. Continuous monitoring technologies assess and alert to driver sleepiness in real-time, while fit for duty technologies provide a single assessment of sleepiness state. The aim of this rapid review was to evaluate and compare sleepiness detection technologies in relation to specifications, cost, target consumer group and validity.Approach. We evaluated a range of sleepiness detection technologies suitable for consumer groups ranging from regular drivers in private vehicles through to work-related drivers within large businesses.Main results. Continuous monitoring technologies typically ranged between $100 and $3000 AUD and had ongoing monthly costs for telematics functionality and manager alerts. Fit for duty technologies had either a one-off purchase cost or a monthly subscription cost. Of concern, the majority of commercial continuous monitoring technologies lacked scientific validation. While some technologies had promising findings in terms of their ability to detect and reduce driver sleepiness, further validation work is required. Field studies that evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of technology alerts under conditions that are regularly experienced by drivers are necessary. Additionally, there is a need for longitudinal naturalistic driving studies to determine whether sleepiness detection technologies actually reduce sleepiness-related crashes or near-crashes.Significance. There is an abundance of sleepiness detection technologies on the market, but a majority lacked validation. There is a need for these technologies and their validation to be regulated by a driver safety body. Otherwise, consumers will base their technology choices on cost and features, rather than the ability to save lives.

A Review of EEG Signal Features and their Application in Driver Drowsiness Detection Systems

Detecting drowsiness in drivers, especially multi-level drowsiness, is a difficult problem that is often approached using neurophysiological signals as the basis for building a reliable system. In this context, electroencephalogram (EEG) signals are the most important source of data to achieve successful detection. In this paper, we first review EEG signal features used in the literature for a variety of tasks, then we focus on reviewing the applications of EEG features and deep learning approaches in driver drowsiness detection, and finally we discuss the open challenges and opportunities in improving driver drowsiness detection based on EEG. We show that the number of studies on driver drowsiness detection systems has increased in recent years and that future systems need to consider the wide variety of EEG signal features and deep learning approaches to increase the accuracy of detection.

Driving simulator experiments to study drowsiness: A systematic review

Objective: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the USA estimated that the effects of drowsiness while driving led to approximately 72,000 crashes, 44,000 injuries, and 800 deaths in 2013. Keeping this in mind, the risk and injuries of drowsy driving remain a major safety issue that clearly needs to be studied. Our purpose was to conduct a systematic review of international literature including studies on driving behavior associated to drowsy and fatigued drivers. The research focused on the prediction and effects of drowsiness, and particularly on studies based on driving in simulated environments. Additionally, we searched for studies related to driving simulators, in general, to better understand the tool's efficacy and its advantages and disadvantages.Methods: This review was made in accordance with PRISMA statement guidelines. After conducting in-depth research in targeted databases, 23 studies met the inclusion criteria; the papers were analyzed regarding the type of experiment and procedures and driving performance of 690 participants was studied.Results: Studies revealed that drowsiness have effects on driving performance and these effects become more relevant with time-on-task and in monotonous scenarios and landscapes. In addition, some documents include validations of several technologies to detect and predict sleepiness.Conclusions: Overall, we can conclude that drowsiness and fatigue impair driving performance, resulting in drivers who are more exposed to risky situations.

An investigation of the relationship between demographic variables, driving behaviour and crash involvement risk of bus drivers: a case study from Iran

The aim of this study was to model bus drivers' crash involvement risk as a function of their demographic factors and driving behaviour. 177 bus drivers completed the bus driver risk index questionnaire. 19.2% of respondents had been involved in at least one at-fault crash during the past 3 years. In addition, age group and having a second job were found to affect the crash involvement rate. Smoker drivers reported significantly lower scores in patient driving and anxious driving factors. Results also indicated that vehicle ownership could improve hazard monitoring and thrill-seeking behaviours of bus drivers. Logistic regression suggested that drivers ≥55 years old are 5.4 times more likely to be involved in crashes, compared with drivers <35 years old. Model results also implied that the odds of crash involvement would decrease by 39% for each one-unit improvement in the scores of hazard monitoring behaviour. Implications are further discussed.

The impact of different seats and whole-body vibration exposures on truck driver vigilance and discomfort

Laboratory studies have shown that exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) increases physical and mental fatigue, which are common issues professional drivers face. The objective of this study was to determine whether altering WBV exposures had any effect on driver vigilance and discomfort. A repeated measures crossover design of five truck drivers with regular 10-h routes was used. Active and passive suspension truck seats were evaluated. For each seat, WBV exposures were measured. Participants completed a discomfort questionnaire and a reaction time task before and after their shift for two weeks, one week per seat. Compared with the passive seat, the active seat significantly reduced WBV exposures, decrements in the optimal and mean reaction times (p = 0.02, 0.047, respectively), and discomfort in the lower back and wrist(s)/forearm(s) (p < 0.01, 0.01, respectively). Study results indicated that reducing WBV helps reduce discomfort and maintain vigilance, which may improve drivers' health and reduce the risk of truck collisions. Practitioner Summary: The active suspension seat used in this study reduced truck drivers' exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) by over 33% in relation to their current industry standard passive suspension seat. This study demonstrated that reducing truck drivers' exposure to WBV reduced fatigue and discomfort development over a workday.

A contextual and temporal algorithm for driver drowsiness detection

This study designs and evaluates a contextual and temporal algorithm for detecting drowsiness-related lane. The algorithm uses steering angle, pedal input, vehicle speed and acceleration as input. Speed and acceleration are used to develop a real-time measure of driving context. These measures are integrated with a Dynamic Bayesian Network that considers the time dependencies in transitions between drowsiness and awake states. The Dynamic Bayesian Network algorithm is validated with data collected from 72 participants driving the National Advanced Driving Simulator. The algorithm has a significantly lower false positive rate than PERCLOS-the current gold standard-and baseline, non-contextual, algorithms under design parameters that prioritize drowsiness detection. Under these parameters, the algorithm reduces false positive rate in highway and rural environments, which are typically problematic for vehicle-based detection algorithms. This algorithm is a promising new approach to driver impairment detection and suggests contextual factors should be considered in subsequent algorithm development processes. It may be combined with comprehensive mitigation methods to improve driving safety.

Stationary gaze entropy predicts lane departure events in sleep-deprived drivers

Performance decrement associated with sleep deprivation is a leading contributor to traffic accidents and fatalities. While current research has focused on eye blink parameters as physiological indicators of driver drowsiness, little is understood of how gaze behaviour alters as a result of sleep deprivation. In particular, the effect of sleep deprivation on gaze entropy has not been previously examined. In this randomised, repeated measures study, 9 (4 male, 5 female) healthy participants completed two driving sessions in a fully instrumented vehicle (1 after a night of sleep deprivation and 1 after normal sleep) on a closed track, during which eye movement activity and lane departure events were recorded. Following sleep deprivation, the rate of fixations reduced while blink rate and duration as well as saccade amplitude increased. In addition, stationary and transition entropy of gaze also increased following sleep deprivation as well as with amount of time driven. An increase in stationary gaze entropy in particular was associated with higher odds of a lane departure event occurrence. These results highlight how fatigue induced by sleep deprivation and time-on-task effects can impair drivers’ visual awareness through disruption of gaze distribution and scanning patterns.

The relative importance of real-time in-cab and external feedback in managing fatigue in real-world commercial transport operations

OBJECTIVE

Real-time driver monitoring systems represent a solution to address key behavioral risks as they occur, particularly distraction and fatigue. The efficacy of these systems in real-world settings is largely unknown. This article has three objectives: (1) to document the incidence and duration of fatigue in real-world commercial truck-driving operations, (2) to determine the reduction, if any, in the incidence of fatigue episodes associated with providing feedback, and (3) to tease apart the relative contribution of in-cab warnings from 24/7 monitoring and feedback to employers.

METHODS

Data collected from a commercially available in-vehicle camera-based driver monitoring system installed in a commercial truck fleet operating in Australia were analyzed. The real-time driver monitoring system makes continuous assessments of driver drowsiness based on eyelid position and other factors. Data were collected in a baseline period where no feedback was provided to drivers. Real-time feedback to drivers then occurred via in-cab auditory and haptic warnings, which were further enhanced by direct feedback by company management when fatigue events were detected by external 24/7 monitors. Fatigue incidence rates and their timing of occurrence across the three time periods were compared.

RESULTS

Relative to no feedback being provided to drivers when fatigue events were detected, in-cab warnings resulted in a 66% reduction in fatigue events, with a 95% reduction achieved by the real-time provision of direct feedback in addition to in-cab warnings (p < 0.01). With feedback, fatigue events were shorter in duration a d occurred later in the trip, and fewer drivers had more than one verified fatigue event per trip.

CONCLUSIONS

That the provision of feedback to the company on driver fatigue events in real time provides greater benefit than feedback to the driver alone has implications for companies seeking to mitigate risks associated with fatigue. Having fewer fatigue events is likely a reflection of the device itself and the accompanying safety culture of the company in terms of how the information is used. Data were analysed on a per-truck trip basis, and the findings are indicative of fatigue events in a large-scale commercial transport fleet. Future research ought to account for individual driver performance, which was not possible with the available data in this retrospective analysis. Evidence that real-time driver monitoring feedback is effective in reducing fatigue events is invaluable in the development of fleet safety policies, and of future national policy and vehicle safety regulations. Implications for automotive driver monitoring are discussed.
