Selection of a suitable plant for phytoremediation in mining artisanal zones

Generalist arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi dominated heavy metal polluted soils at two artisanal and small - scale gold mining sites in southeastern Ecuador

BACKGROUND

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining activities are producing contamination with heavy metals and metalloids (HMM) into soils and water worldwide. The HMM are considered as one of the major abiotic stresses due to their long-term persistence in soil. In this context, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) confer resistance to a variety of abiotic plant stressors including HMM. However, little is known regarding the diversity and composition of AMF communities in heavy metal polluted sites in Ecuador.

METHODS

In order to investigate the AMF diversity, root samples and associated soil of six plant species were collected from two sites polluted by heavy metals, located in Zamora-Chinchipe province, Ecuador. The AMF 18S nrDNA genetic region was analyzed and sequenced, and fungal OTUs were defined based on 99% sequence similarity. Results were contrasted with AMF communities from a natural forest and from reforestation sites located in the same province and with available sequences in GenBank.

RESULTS

The main pollutants in soils were Pb, Zn, Hg, Cd and Cu with concentrations exceeding the soil reference value for agricultural use. Molecular phylogeny and OTU delimitation showed 19 OTUs, the family Glomeraceae was the most OTU-rich followed by Archaeosporaceae, Acaulosporaceae, Ambisporaceae and Paraglomeraceae. Most of the OTUs (11 of 19) have been found at other locations worldwide, 14 OTUs were proven from nearby non-contaminated sites in Zamora-Chinchipe.

CONCLUSION

Our study showed that there are no specialized OTUs at the studied HMM polluted sites, but rather generalists adapted to a wide variety of habitats. Their potential role in phytoremediation approaches remains to be investigated.

Removal of Heavy Metals from Mine Tailings in Central Chile Using Solidago chilensis Meyen, Haplopappus foliosus DC, and Lycium chilense Miers ex Bertero

Mining activities have been a part of the history of Chile since time immemorial, generating pollution and environmental liabilities. Due to the lack of regulation, many tailings are deposited close to rivers or/and on unstable ground, near which towns have been built, generally in locations with no budget for their treatment. This study tested three plant species from Northern and Central Chile to remove total chromium, nickel, and zinc from tailings: Solidago chilensis, Haplopappus foliosus, and Lycium chilense, which complements the few existing studies on heavy metals removal with native or endemic Chilean shrubs. The experiments were conducted ex situ, and the initial and final concentrations of metals were determined in tailings and plants to obtain the removal efficiency, translocation and bioconcentration factors. Among these species, the best performance was obtained using Solidago chilensis, achieving removal efficiencies of 24% for Cr, 19% for Ni, and 17% for Zn, showing the ability to phytostabilize chromium and the higher resistance concerning the toxicity threshold. Haplopappus foliosus and Lycium chilense presented a slight tendency to stabilize chromium. Only Solidago chilensis showed little ability to extract Zn.

A Bibliometric Analysis of the Scientific Research on Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining

Mineral resource exploitation is one of the activities that contribute to economic growth and the development of society. Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) is one of these activities. Unfortunately, there is no clear consensus to define ASM. However, its importance is relevant in that it represents, in some cases, the only employment alternative for millions of people, although it also significantly impacts the environment. This work aims to investigate the scientific information related to ASM through a bibliometric analysis and, in addition, to define the new lines that are tending to this field. The study comprises three phases of work: (i) data collection, (ii) data processing and software selection, and (iii) data interpretation. The results reflect that the study on ASM developed intensively from 2010 to the present. In general terms, the research addressed focuses on four interrelated lines: (i) social conditioning factors of ASM, (ii) environmental impacts generated by ASM, (iii) mercury contamination and its implication on health and the environment, and (iv) ASM as a livelihood. The work also defines that geotourism in artisanal mining areas is a significant trend of the last decade, explicitly focusing on the conservation and use of the geological and mining heritage and, in addition, the promotion of sustainable development of ASM.

Native Hyperaccumulator Plants with Differential Phytoremediation Potential in an Artisanal Gold Mine of the Ecuadorian Amazon

In tropical forests of southern Ecuador, artisanal gold mining releases heavy metals that become xenobiotic with indefinite circulation and eventual bioaccumulation. Restoration and rehabilitation of degraded mining sites represent a major ecological, technological and economic issue. In this study, we estimate the capacity of two native woody plants to accumulate cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn) and mercury (Hg), with the goal of developing effective strategies for phytoremediation of mining sites. Individuals of Erato polymnioides and Miconia sp., as well as their rhizospheric soils, were sampled from a natural zone (NZ) of montane cloud forest, used as a control, and a polluted zone (PZ) subjected to active gold mining. Concentrations of the four heavy metals were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Cd, Zn and Hg concentrations were higher in soils of PZ than NZ. Bioaccumulation (BCF) and translocation factors (TF) showed that Miconia sp. has potential for Cd and Zn phytostabilization, E. polymnioides has potential for Cd and Zn phytoextraction, and both species have potential for Hg phytoextraction. Despite the low productivity of these species, their adaptability to the edaphoclimatic conditions of the region and the possibility of using amendments to increase their biomass could compensate for the effectiveness of these species in reclaiming soils contaminated by mining.

An Assessment of the Metal Removal Capability of Endemic Chilean Species

In Chile, there are several abandoned mine tailing impoundments near population centers that need to be remediated. In this study, the ability of Oxalis gigantea, Cistanthe grandiflora, and Puya berteroniana to remove Zn, Ni, and Cr from mine tailings was evaluated. The plants’ removal efficiency, bioconcentration, and translocation factors regarding these metals were determined to assess the ability of certain endemic species from Northern and Central Chile to extract or stabilize metals. After a period of seven months, the chemical analysis of plants and tailings, together with the statistical treatment of data, indicated the inability of all the species to translocate Ni, Cr, or Zn with a translocation factor lower than one. The results showed the stabilizing character of Oxalis gigantea, Puya berteroniana, and Cistanthe grandiflora for Zn, with a bioconcentration factor close to 1.2 in all cases, and the same ability of the latter two species for Cr, with a bioconcentration factor of 1.5 in the case of Cistanthe grandiflora and 1.7 for Puya berteroniana. Finally, a removal efficiency of 9.3% was obtained with Cistanthe grandiflora for Cr and 15% for Ni; values lower than 6.4% were obtained for Zn in all cases. Improvements in the process should be sought to enhance the performance of these species for the accumulation of the target metals.

Phytoremediation of Soils Contaminated with Heavy Metals from Gold Mining Activities Using Clidemia sericea D. Don

Soils contaminated by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) as a result of anthropogenic activities such as mining are a problem due to the adverse effects on human and environmental health, making it necessary to seek sustainable strategies to remediate contaminated areas. The objective of this study was to evaluate the species Clidemia sericea D. Don for the phytoremediation of soils contaminated with PTEs (Hg, Pb, and Cd) from gold mining activities. The study was conducted for three months, with soils from a gold mining area in northern Colombia, and seeds of C. sericea, under a completely randomized experimental design with one factor (concentration of PTEs in soil) and four levels (control (T0), low (T1), medium (T2), and high (T3)), each treatment in triplicate, for a total of twelve experimental units. Phytotoxic effects on plants, bioconcentration (BCF), and translocation (TF) factors were determined. The results obtained for the tissues differed in order of metal accumulation, with the root showing the highest concentration of metals. The highest values of bioconcentration (BCF > 1) were presented for Hg at T3 and Cd in the four treatments; and of translocation (TF > 1) for Hg and Pb at T0 and T1; however, for Pb, the TF indicates that it is transferable, but it is not considered for phytoextraction. Thus, C. sericea demonstrated its potential as a phytostabilizer of Hg and Cd in mining soils, strengthening as a wild species with results of resistance to the stress of the PTEs evaluated, presenting similar behavior and little phytotoxic affectation on the growth and development of each of the plants in the different treatments.

Vanadium accumulation mode of Heteropogon contortus and its driving factors in Majiatian tailing reservoir in Panzhihua, Southwestern China

Native plants in metal pollution sites have great potentials for mine rehabilitation. In the presented work, we investigated Vanadium (V) concentrations of soils and plants (Heteropogon contortus) in Majiatian V-Ti magnetite tailing reservoir in Panzhihua, Southwestern China. The objectives were to explore the V accumulation mode of H. contortus and its driving factors, as well as the phytoremediation potential of H. contortus. As the results, H. contortus accumulated 37.53 mg/kg and 8.69 mg/kg of V in root and aerial part, respectively. With the increase of rehabilitation age, root V concentrations decreased, while aerial part V concentrations remained constant. The significant negative correlations between root V and soil V, acid-soluble V (V_HAc) (P < 0.05) indicated that increasing soil V and V_HAc concentrations drove the V accumulation mode of H. contortus. Soil properties had a little influence on the V accumulation mode of H. contortus. Therefore, H. contortus might be not the suitable plant extractant to remove V from mine tailing for its lower V accumulation capacity. On the other hand, it can tolerate high V stress through elimination and detoxification/isolation V. Furthermore, the settlement of H. contortus increased the content of soil organic matter and might thus improve the soil quality. The cover of H. contortus is also beneficial to reduce the dispersion of the tailings and prevent contaminating surrounding soil. Therefor it showed a great potential to serve as a pioneer plant in the remediation of V-rich tailing reservoirs and other V-contaminated sites with similar poor soil condition.

Monitoring of a long term phytoremediation process of a soil contaminated by heavy metals and hydrocarbons in Tuscany

The purpose of this study was to monitor and model indicators of soil contamination, organic matter evolution and biochemical processes involved in a long-term phytoremediation process. Populus nigra L., Paulownia tomentosa Steud., Cytisus scoparius L. and natural vegetation were used in differently contaminated areas (high, medium and low levels of contamination). Parameters indicating contamination (total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and heavy metals) and agronomic (C, N and P) and functional (enzyme activities) soil recovery were monitored for 3.5 years. Three subareas with different levels of contamination (high, medium and low) were identified according to the Nemerow Index. A considerable decrease in TPH (52% on average) over time in the whole site was measured, while the metal reduction was only of about 22% at surface level. A stimulation in metabolic soil processes and improvement in the chemical quality of the soil was also observed throughout the experimental site. Statistical analysis modelling showed that the contaminant content decreased following a one-phase decay model, while the dramatic increase in enzyme activities could be represented by an exponential growth equation. On the basis of our data, it is possible to conclude that the initial contamination level affected neither the decontamination process nor the improvement in soil quality, which occurred similarly in the three different contaminated areas.

Assessment of autochthonous aquatic macrophytes with phytoremediation potential for dairy wastewater treatment in floating constructed wetlands

The phytoremediation potential of autochthonous aquatic plants has been increasingly explored. This study investigated the use of macrophytes found in natural ecosystems in the southern coast of the state of Bahia, Brazil, for treatment of dairy wastewater (DWW) using experimental systems of the floating constructed wetland type. Four species of aquatic macrophytes have been tested using floating platforms made from PET bottles. The chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total solids (TS), pH, and temperature of DWW were analyzed for 15 days. On the fifth day, a 74.8% (±7.7) decrease of BOD was achieved. Eichhornia crassipes (86.4%) and Eichhornia paniculata (84.8%) showed the best results, while Polygonum ferrugineum and Borreria scabiosoides achieved the removal of 65% and 74.2% of BOD, respectively. Considering the TS reduction in the DWW diluted with rainwater, the best results were obtained by Eichhornia crassipes (64.3%) and Eichhornia paniculata (65.18%). The macrophytes of the Eichhornia genus showed a greater potential for the treatment of DWW than the macrophytes Polygonum ferrugineum and Borreria scabiosoides, with a hydraulic retention time varying between four and five days.

Effects of peat on plant growth and lead and zinc phytostabilization from lead-zinc mine tailing in southern China: Screening plant species resisting and accumulating metals

In order to investigate the toxicity-resistance of eighteen Chinese native plants in lead (Pb)-zinc (Zn) mine tailings, we categorized their resistance to Pb and Zn, and tested their potential for phytoremediation effectiveness of Pb and Zn. Fourteen woody plant species belonging to 12 families, and 4 herbaceous species belonging to 4 families, were grown in pots with mixtures of 100% tailing +0% peat (CK), 90% tailing +10% peat (A1), and 80% tailing + 20% peat (A2), respectively. Plant height and biomass, chlorophyll content, and Pb and Zn contents of non-rhizosphere spoil mixtures and plant tissues were measured. Fifteen of the plants grew in all three spoil mixtures. Both A1 and A2 had higher plant height and biomass increment and chlorophyll contents than CK. The content of Pb and Zn in plant shoots and roots was CK > A1 > A2. The value of BCF less than 0.1, compared to 1, was a more precise classification basis for plants excluding metals. Screening for Pb and Zn resistant plants and their bioremediation potential produced the following candidate species: Sapium sebiferum, Salix matsudana, Hibiscus cannabinus, Corchorus capsularis, Ricinus communis, and Populus nigra. These species were highly Pb and Zn tolerant species, with notable growth characteristics and capacities to bioaccumulate Pb and Zn from the mine tailings. Compared to CK, the removal of Pb and Zn from non-rhizosphere spoil increased by an average of 9.64% and 9.6%, respectively in A1, but decreased in A2. The results indicated candidate species and 10% peat addition in the tailing were significant in phytoremediation of Pb and Zn regarding environmental safety.

The interactions of metal concentrations and soil properties on toxic metal accumulation of native plants in vanadium mining area

High demand of Vanadium (V) in high-strength steel and battery manufacturing industry led to extensive V mining activity in China, and caused multi-metal pollution of soil around V mining area. To understand the phytoremediation potentials of native plants grown in V mining area, and the effect of soil properties and soil metal concentrations on toxic metal accumulations of native plants. Setaria viridis, Kochia scoparia and Chenopodium album were sampled from different sites in V mining area, soil properties, soil metal concentrations and metal accumulation amount of investigated plants were measured, bioaccumulation (BAF) and translocation (TF) efficiencies were calculated. Soil pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC) and available phosphorous (P) can significantly affect V and copper (Cu) uptake in the shoots of Setaria viridis while soil metal contents were lower than the permissible limits. Soil pH can significantly affect V accumulations in the roots and shoots of Kochia scoparia grown in slightly V polluted soils. Setaria viridis exhibited TF > 1 for moderately V and slightly chromium (Cr) polluted soils, and BAF>1 for slightly Cu contaminated soils respectively. Kochia scoparia and Chenopodium album showed TF > 1 and BAF>1 for slightly V polluted soils, respectively. Setaria viridis was practical for in situ phytoextractions of moderately V and slightly Cr polluted soils, and phytostabilization of slightly Cu contaminated soils. Kochia scoparia and Chenopodium album could be used as phytoextractor and phytostablizer in slightly V polluted soils in V mining area. Metal uptake of native plants grown in slightly multi-metal contaminated sites in V mining area can be manipulated by altering soil properties.

Plant species diversity for vegetation restoration in manganese tailing wasteland

Vegetation restoration is one of the most effective measures to restore degraded ecosystem in mining wasteland. A field experiment was conducted to study the effects of some site treatments' three different approaches on the benefits of selective vegetation in the manganese mine. Three different approaches included (1) exposed tailings, the control treatment (tailing site); (2) soil covering of 10-cm thickness (external-soil site), and (3) soil covering of 10-cm thickness, soil ameliorating (adding fowl dung), and seeding propagation of Cynodon dactylon (Linn.) Pers. (rehabilitation site). The results indicated that 18 herb species were taken from 8 families and 4 woody plants in three sites after 1 year. After 3 years, 29 species from 14 families were observed in 3 sites. Meanwhile, compared with tailing site, the plant species of rehabilitation site was more than tailing site, and the plant abundance of external-soil site was similar to rehabilitation site. It was worthy to be mentioned that the plant species of external-soil site and rehabilitation site had a better effect on the plant community coverage of herb layer as compared with tailing site. In summary, the plant species of rehabilitation site had the most species diversity and could be recommended as the ve-restoration modes in manganese tail wasteland.

Erato polymnioides - A novel Hg hyperaccumulator plant in ecuadorian rainforest acid soils with potential of microbe-associated phytoremediation

Mercury (Hg) accumulation capacity was assessed in three plant species (Axonopus compressus, Erato polymnioides, and Miconia zamorensis) that grow on soils polluted by artisanal small-scale gold mines in the Ecuadorian rainforest. Individuals of three species were collected at two sampling zones: i) an intensive zone (IZ, 4.8 mg Hg kg^-1 of soil) where gold extraction continues to occur, and ii) a natural zone (NZ, 0.19 mg Hg kg^-1 of soil). In addition, the percentage of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonization was determined in plant roots and seven fungal morphotypes isolated from rhizospheric soil. Results suggest a facilitation role of native and pollution adapted AMF on Hg phytoaccumulation. E.g., E. polymnioides increased Hg accumulation when growing with greater AMF colonization. We concluded that E. polymnioides is a good candidate for the design of microbe-assisted strategies for Hg remediation at gold mining areas. The consortia between E. polymnioides and the AMF isolated in this study could be instrumental to get a deeper understanding of the AMF role in Hg phytoaccumulation.
