Microalgae based wastewater treatment: a shifting paradigm for the developing nations

Effects of dilution and pretreatment on nutrient removal and biomass production of Chlorella vulgaris in kitchen wastewater

This research investigated the effect of kitchen wastewater (KWW) concentrations and pretreatment methods on Chlorella vulgaris biomass production, lipid content and nutrient removal. This study was divided into two separate experiments. The first experiment determined the appropriate dilution rate of KWW for the growth of microalgae, sterilized KWW was varied between 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%(v/v). The result indicated that 50%(v/v) showed the highest nutrient removal by 90.23%, 85.87%, and 80.64% of sCOD, TKN, and TP, respectively. The highest biomass and lipid content were obtained with 50%(v/v) (1.447 g/L, 37.9%). The second experiment was to find an effective physical pretreatment method, which separated the biotic contaminant, non-sterilized KWW was diluted 50%(v/v) and filtered with different mesh size filters (150 μm, 50 μm, and 30 μm) compared with sterilized KWW as a control sample. The result indicated that pretreatment with 50 μm filtration was found highest nutrient removal by 90.51%, 84.74%, and 77.50% of sCOD, TKN, and TP, respectively. The highest biomass and lipid content were obtained with 50 μm filtration (1.496 g/L, 39.4%). Our results support the hypothesis that the optimal dilution and proper filtration of KWW helps create more favorable environment for microalgal growth.

Biodiesel production and simultaneous treatment of domestic and livestock wastewater using indigenous microalgae, Chlorella sorokiniana JD1-1

In this study, the potential of Chlorella sorokiniana JD1-1 for biodiesel production was evaluated using domestic wastewater (DWW) as a diluent for locally-generated livestock wastewater (LWW). This strategy aimed to provide sustainable wastewater treatment, reduce environmental impacts, enhance cost-effectiveness, and promote biodiesel production. LWW was diluted with tap water and DWW at ratios of 75%, 50%, and 25% (v/v), and the effects on microalgal growth, nutrient removal efficiency, and lipid yield were evaluated. Although the maximum biomass concentration was observed in the artificial growth medium (BG-11) (1170 mg L-1), 75% dilution using tap water (610 mg L-1) and DWW (780 mg L-1) yielded results comparable to the exclusive use of DWW (820 mg L-1), suggesting a potential for substitution. Total nitrogen (TN) removal rates were consistently high under all conditions, particularly in samples with higher concentrations of LWW. Conversely, total phosphorus (TP) concentrations decreased under most conditions, although some displayed large increases. Further studies are necessary to optimize the nutrient balance while maintaining economic feasibility and maximizing biodiesel production.

A Review on the Reliability and the Readiness Level of Microalgae-Based Nutrient Recovery Technologies for Secondary Treated Effluent in Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants

Algae-based wastewater treatment technologies are promising green technologies with huge economical potential and environmental co-benefits. However, despite the immense research, work, and achievement, no publications were found wherein these technologies have been successfully applied in an operational environment for nitrogen and phosphorus removal of secondary treated effluent in municipal wastewater treatment plants. Based on a literature review and targeted comprehensive analysis, the paper seeks to identify the main reasons for this. The reliability (considering inlet wastewater quality variations, operating conditions and process control, algae harvesting method, and produced biomass) as well as the technology readiness level for five types of reactors are discussed. The review shows that the reactors with a higher level of control over the technological parameters are more reliable but algal post-treatment harvesting and additional costs are barriers for their deployment. The least reliable systems continue to be attractive for research due to the non-complex operation and relieved expenditure costs. The rotating biofilm systems are currently undertaking serious development due to their promising features. Among the remaining research gaps and challenges for all the reactor types are the identification of the optimal algal strains, establishment of technological parameters, overcoming seasonal variations in the effluent’s quality, and biomass harvesting.

Arthrospira sp. mediated bioremediation of gray water in ceramic membrane based photobioreactor: process optimization by response surface methodology

Direct discharge of raw domestic sewage enriched with nitrogenous and phosphorous compounds into the water bodies causes eutrophication and other environmental hazards with detrimental impacts on public and ecosystem health. The present study focuses on phycoremediation of gray water with Arthrospira sp. using an innovative hydrophobic ceramic membrane-based photobioreactor system integrated with CO₂ biofixation and biodiesel production, aiming for green technology development. Surfactant and oil-rich gray water collected from the domestic kitchen was used wherein, chloride, sulfate, and surfactant concentrations were statistically optimized using response surface methodology (RSM), considering maximum microalgal growth rate as a response for the design. Ideal concentrations (mg/L) of working parameters were found to be 7.91 (sulfate), 880.49 (chloride), and 144.02 (surfactant), respectively to achieve optimum growth rate of 0.43 g_dwt/L/day. Enhancement of growth rate of targeted microalgae by 150% with suitable CO₂ (19.5%) supply and illumination in the photobioreactor affirms its efficient operation. Additionally, harvested microalgal biomass obtained from the process showed a biodiesel content of around 5.33% (dry weight). The microalgal treatment enabled about 96.82, 87.5, and 99.8% reductions in BOD, COD, and TOC, respectively, indicating the potential of the process in pollutant assimilation and recycling of such wastewater along with value-added product generation.
