The National Distribution Pattern and Factors Affecting Heavy Metals in Sediments of Water Systems in China

Seawater warming intensifies nickel toxicity to a marine copepod: a multigenerational perspective

Due to human activities, marine organisms are frequently co-stressed with nickel (Ni) pollution and seawater warming; nevertheless, very scarce information is known about their interaction in marine biota under a multigenerational scenario. Here, after verifying the interaction of Ni and warming via a 48-h acute test, we conducted a multigenerational experiment (F0-F2), in which the marine copepod Tigriopus japonicus was exposed to Ni at environmentally realistic concentrations (0, 2, and 20 µg/L) under ambient (22℃) and predicted seawater warming (26℃) conditions. Ni accumulation and the important life history traits were analyzed for each generation. Results showed that Ni exposure caused Ni bioaccumulation and thus compromised the survivorship and egg production of T. japonicus. In particular, seawater warming significantly increased Ni accumulation, thus intensifying the negative effects of Ni on its survivorship and development. Overall, this study suggests that Ni multigenerational exposure even at environmentally realistic concentrations could produce a significant impact on marine copepod's health, and this impact would be intensified under the projected seawater warming, providing a mechanistic understanding of the interaction between warming and Ni pollution in marine organisms from a multigenerational perspective.

Spatial Variations and Potential Risks of Heavy Metals in Seawater, Sediments, and Living Organisms in Jiuzhen Bay, China

Coastal waters are polluted by heavy metals to varying degrees, posing potential risks to marine ecology and human health. In May 2006, the pollution levels, sources, and ecological risks of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Hg, and As) in seawater, surface sediments, and living organisms were studied in Jiuzhen Bay in Fujian, China. This study identified Hg (0.26–0.72 µg/L) and As (20.3–31.5 µg/L) pollution in the seawater of Jiuzhen Bay. In sediments, heavy Pb pollution (946 µg/g dw) was only detected at one station at a level posing very serious potential risk, while Hg pollution (0.052–0.087 µg/g dw) was observed at three stations at a level posing serious potential risk. No heavy metal pollution was detected in sediments at other stations. The concentrations of five heavy metals (Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) exceeded the corresponding National Quality Standards for oysters, indicating heavy pollution, based on an ecological risk assessment. In clams, two heavy metals (Pb and As) exceeded the standards, indicating light pollution, based on an ecological risk assessment. No heavy metal pollution was found in fish or shrimps. The heavy metals in the seawater and sediments of Jiuzhen Bay are mainly derived from the river discharges of Luxi and Wujiang Rivers although sewage discharge along the coast of Jiuzhen Bay is another source of heavy metal pollution at some stations. Given the pollution of Pb, Hg, and As in seawater and sediments at some stations within the bay, the potential risks of Pb, Hg, and As in living organisms to both the marine ecology and human health deserve increased attention.

Heavy Metals in Sediment from the Urban and Rural Rivers in Harbin City, Northeast China

The concentrations and ecological risk of six widespread heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn, Cd and Pb) were investigated and evaluated in sediments from both urban and rural rivers in a northeast city of China. The decreasing trend of the average concentration of heavy metals was Zn > Cr > Cu > Pb > Ni > Cd in Majiagou River (urban) and was Zn > Cr > Pb > Cu > Ni > Cd in Yunliang River (rural). The results showed that the concentrations of Cd and Zn were significantly elevated compared to the environmental background value (p < 0.05). Half of all sampling locations were deemed ‘contaminated’ as defined by the improved Nemerow pollution index (P_N’ > 1.0). Applying the potential ecological risk index (RI) indicated a ‘high ecological risk’ for both rivers, with Cd accounting for more than 80% in both cases. Source apportionment indicated a significant correlation between Cd and Zn in sediments (R = 0.997, p < 0.01) in Yunliang River, suggesting that agricultural activities could be the major sources. Conversely, industrial production, coal burning, natural sources and traffic emissions are likely to be the main pollution sources for heavy metals in Majiagou River. This study has improved our understanding of how human activities, industrial production, and agricultural production influence heavy metal pollution in urban and rural rivers, and it provides a further weight of evidence for the linkages between different pollutants and resulting levels of heavy metals in riverine sediments.
