Hurricane-Force Grief: A Mirror of Fathers' Love

A child's death is a traumatic experience that profoundly impacts parents' psychological, physical, and social wellbeing. The literature describes gender differences in grief response associated with child loss, yet less is known about fathers' grief in comparison that of mothers due to fathers' underrepresentation in bereavement research. There is a need for scholarly exploration to advance understanding of fathers' grief. This article presents selected findings on fathers' grief responses that emerged from a larger qualitative study, which aimed to describe fathers' lived experience of bereavement after a child's death. Profound grief emerged as one essential theme of fathers' bereavement experience. Participants described the meaning of their grief, their multidimensional grief responses, their grief triggers, and their grief intensity. Findings deepen understanding of fathers' grief associated with child loss and advance the body of parental bereavement literature.

Pregnancy loss experiences of couples in a phenomenological study: Gender differences within the Turkish sociocultural context

Despite the high prevalence of miscarriage and stillbirth, prenatally bereaved couples tend to experience a sense of isolation or loneliness after their loss. The purpose of this study was to describe the prenatal loss experiences of partners from a sociocultural perspective. Data were gathered via semi-structured interviews with 10 couples (n = 20). The findings of the study reflected the inner experiences of partners, how sociocultural context has impacted their grief experiences, and how women's and men's grief reactions differ within this sociocultural context.

You are at rock bottom: A qualitative systematic review of the needs of bereaved parents as they journey through the death of their child to cancer

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION

This systematic review will examine the social support needs of bereaved parents in the specific context of pediatric cancer by synthesizing the qualitative evidence. Social support encompasses emotional, practical, informational, and meaning-making support needs.

LITERATURE SEARCH

The Joanna Briggs Institute procedures for conducting qualitative systematic reviews guided every stage of this review. Four databases (PsychInfo, CINAHL, Pubmed, and ASSIA) were systematically searched, in addition to the gray literature and scoping review. Through a five-step critical appraisal process 11 out of 668 potential articles were identified as meeting the inclusion criteria.

DATA EVALUATION/SYNTHESIS

Relevant findings were synthesized with a thematic-synthesis approach. Findings, which follow the journey of bereaved parents integrated under the core-category "Needs." This encompasses of four higher-level categories: Last days: Parent needs when caring for their dying child Rest in peace: Parent needs during the child's death Feeling abandoned: Parent needs for contact after the child's death Searching for Meaning: Parents needs when making sense of loss.

CONCLUSION

Informational support needs is largely unexplored in academic literature. Staff in the treating-hospital are central in offering bereavement-support to parents, who may otherwise feel that they have lost their second home (hospital) and second family (staff).

Death rituals, religious beliefs, and grief of Turkish women

Grief following a death loss is a common experience that all individuals face at some point in life. There, however, are only a few in-depth studies regarding grief in cultures around the world and specific roles that rituals and beliefs related to death may have in the grieving process. Results of interview data from eight grieving Turkish women revealed three themes: (a) metaphors of loss, (b) funeral rituals, and (c) rituals in relation to control and personal factors. Overall, participants' sense of control appeared to influence their grief experiences and perceptions of rituals.

Holocaust memory reconstruction among bereaved parents

Many studies have examined the trauma bereaved parents experience. The current study focuses on the role that the Holocaust's memory plays in the bereavement experience of parents who have lost a child in a terrorist attack in Israel. Forty bereaved parents were interviewed, using semistructured in-depth interviews. Bereaved parents related to the Holocaust memory as a meaningful experience in their private bereavement. The parents expressed dialectic feelings concerning their loss, personal victimization on the one hand and personal strength, and growth on the other hand. It seems that memory reconstruction of the Holocaust can be used as a coping resource.

A New State of Being

In spite of growing bereavement literature, the meaning of the lived experience of parental bereavement is not well understood. This article presents selected findings from a Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenological study which aimed to describe the lived experience of bereaved parents who experienced the death of a child due to cancer. Conversational interviews were conducted with six parents who experienced the death of a young child due to cancer at least one year prior to participation. The nature of parental bereavement was revealed to be a new state of being into which parents enter immediately after the death of a child and which has no end point. Findings will equip health professionals and others who work with bereaved parents with a deeper understanding of the meaning of parental bereavement.

Cultural Influences in Pediatric Cancer

Objective: To review the literature on cultural factors influencing clinical care and family management of pediatric cancer. Methods: A literature review including 72 articles related to cultural issues in pediatric cancer was conducted. Information was organized around several clinically driven themes. Results: Cultural factors influenced many aspects of the cancer experience including illness representations, reaction to diagnosis, illness disclosure patterns, complementary and alternative medicine use, management of medical procedures, coping strategies, and end of life issues. Conclusion: Increased awareness of cultural factors is needed to improve clinical care and reduce health disparities. Specific strategies to approach cultural differences are provided to enhance patient and family care from diagnosis to cure/end of life.
