Social Workers, Burnout, and Self-Care:: A Public Health Issue

Social workers have a complex role of providing social services with compassion and empathy while working tirelessly, enduring burnout at some level in their careers. The consequences of burnout can be harmful to workers, the people who they service, their families and careers. This public health issue is impacting social workers globally and is the impetus in exploring burnout to assist social workers with identifying the stressors that can lead to burnout and formulate plans to alleviate stress by using self-care tools. Social workers can use these tools to help prevent future stressors from their involvement in providing services to individuals, families, groups, communities, and organizations. This paper reviews the literature that explores burnout of social workers and provides self-care tools to use in daily practice.

Influencing factors of self-disclosure and its impact on quality of life in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus

BACKGROUND

Self-disclosure may enhance positive illness perceptions, whereas patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) always facing negative illness perceptions due to multiple reasons, so elucidation of factors affecting self-disclosure may facilitate the development of quality of life.

METHODS

A total of 161 hospitalized patients with SLE were recruited. Scales on demographic and clinical characteristics, self-disclosure, psychosocial status (e.g. Social Support Rating Scale - SSRS) and quality of life were used to collect related information from clients. Univariate analysis was performed by Kruskal-Wallis rank-sum test or chi-square test, and multivariate analysis by ordinal logistic regression.

RESULTS

Social support, drinking, depression and cause of hospitalization were found to be influencing factors of self-disclosure. Multiple logistic regression analyses revealed that the significant and independent factors associated with self-disclosure in patients with SLE were social support, drinking and depression. Domains of LupusQoL, except physical health and fatigue, were positively correlated with self-disclosure.

CONCLUSIONS

With the increase of social support, the level of self-disclosure become worse, drinking, depression and cause of hospitalization are risk factors for it. Moreover, the level of self-disclosure is positively related to the LupusQoL. Medical staff should formulate effective measures according to the results to improve self-disclosure in patients with SLE and promote their quality of life.

Self-disclosure, mindfulness, and their relationships with happiness and well-being

Background

This study aims to test how self-disclosure relates to mindfulness, whether self-disclosure or mindfulness best predicts happiness and well-being, and whether there are significant differences between happiness and well-being levels due to self-disclosure and mindfulness. Data from a public sample was collected using e-mails and social media platforms (N = 486).

Results

The findings demonstrated a weak relationship between mindfulness and self-disclosure (r = 0.16) and acting with awareness but a strong relationship between happiness, wellness, mindfulness, and its factors. The results revealed four values that predict the differentiation between happy and unhappy people, and these values are statistically significant, namely, mindfulness, description, acceptance without judgment, and self-disclosure, as well as four values that predict the distinction between being well and unwell, namely mindfulness, observation, description, and self-disclosure. Additionally, results showed significant differences in the means of each of the mindfulness predictor variables in favor of happiness, wellness, and females. For the self-disclosure variable, the results showed differences in its means favoring females, happiness, and wellness. Finally, when controlling for gender and age, regression analyses found mindfulness to be an important predictor for happiness and well-being at 59% and 48% of the variance, respectively, while self-disclosure was a weak predictor at 12% and 15%, respectively.

Conclusions

In general, the results indicate that mindfulness is more effective and beneficial for living a happy and healthy life than self-disclosure

Pastors in Prisons and Correctional Settings, Resilience, and the Propensity for Social Entrepreneurship: Comparing two Continuing Education Programs

This article reports a study on the impact of two continuing education programs for pastors working in prisons and correctional settings. Pastors who did the spirituality refresher training sessions reported greater resilience and social entrepreneurship inclinations posttest compared to those who did the expressive writing sessions. Male pastors, with a postgraduate degree and chaplaincy-focused training, prison pastors, ever-singles, pastors living in religious institutions/seminaries, and with higher intervention compliance, reported higher benefits from spirituality refresher training.

Das SLUB TextLab: Offene Werkstatt für analoge und digitale Textarbeit

Auf der Suche nach einem neuen Raumnutzungskonzept für die Zweigbibliothek Erziehungswissenschaft wurde an der SLUB Dresden in den letzten zwei Jahren das SLUB TextLab entwickelt. In Zusammenarbeit mit lokalen Kooperationspartnern unterstützt es Nutzer bei der analogen und digitalen Textarbeit. Die Kombination von Schreibberatung, Digital Humanities und Embodiment in einer wissenschaftlichen Bibliothek als Dritter Ort ist innovativ und zukunftsrelevant, da Bibliotheken aufgrund der zunehmenden Digitalisierung und dem damit verbundenen Rückgang des physischen Bestandes ein neues Profil entwickeln müssen.
