Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance under Ultraviolet and Visible Light Illumination of ZnO Thin Films Prepared by Modified Sol-Gel Method

Semiconductor oxides are frequently used as active photocatalysts for the degradation of organic agents in water polluted by domestic industry. In this study, sol-gel ZnO thin films with a grain size in the range of 7.5-15.7 nm were prepared by applying a novel two-step drying procedure involving hot air treatment at 90-95 °C followed by conventional furnace drying at 140 °C. For comparison, layers were made by standard furnace drying. The effect of hot air treatment on the film surface morphology, transparency, and photocatalytic behavior during the degradation of Malachite Green azo dye in water under ultraviolet or visible light illumination is explored. The films treated with hot air demonstrate significantly better photocatalytic activity under ultraviolet irradiation than the furnace-dried films, which is comparable with the activity of unmodified ZnO nanocrystal powders. The achieved percentage of degradation is 78-82% under ultraviolet illumination and 85-90% under visible light illumination. Multiple usages of the hot air-treated films (up to six photocatalytic cycles) are demonstrated, indicating improved photo-corrosion resistance. The observed high photocatalytic activity and good photo-corrosion stability are related to the hot air treatment, which causes a reduction of oxygen vacancies and other defects and the formation of interstitial oxygen and/or zinc vacancies in the films.

Magnetic bio-composite based on zirconium and chitosan modified activated carbon from peanut husk with enhanced antibacterial and adsorptive potential for alizarin red and congo red in wastewater

Creating new adsorbents is crucial for removing contaminants from water due to increased industrialization, which has worsened water pollution in recent years. In this study, a magnetic biocomposite, Zirconium (Zr)-doped chitosan (CS)-coated iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4-NPs)-peanut husk (PH)-based activated carbon (AC) (Zr-CS/Fe3O4-NPs@PH-AC), was synthesized for efficient removal of alizarin red (AR) and congo red (CR) dyes, alongside antibacterial applications. Characterization via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis revealed micropores and mesopores development due to chemical activation of PH biomaterial and Fe3O4-NPs addition. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) identified functional groups and structural properties. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) analyzed magnetic properties. Optimal conditions for AR/CR removal were determined, including Zr-CS/Fe3O4-NPs@PH-AC dose, dye dose, contact time, and temperature, achieving maximum removal percentages. Experimentally determined maximum adsorption capacities for AR and CR were 374.3 and 154.1 mg·g-1, respectively. Cytotoxicity studies affirmed the eco-friendly and non-toxic nature of the adsorbent by exhibiting the reduction in the cell viability from 100 % to 88.68 % from the 0 to 200 μg·L-1 respectively. Additionally, the biocomposite exhibited significant antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) due to magnetic NPs. The material in this study shows extreme compatibility for numerous applications.

Rhizopus oryzae-Mediated Green Synthesis of Magnesium Oxide Nanoparticles (MgO-NPs): A Promising Tool for Antimicrobial, Mosquitocidal Action, and Tanning Effluent Treatment

The metabolites of the fungal strain Rhizopus oryaze were used as a biocatalyst for the green-synthesis of magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO-NPs). The production methodology was optimized to attain the maximum productivity as follows: 4 mM of precursor, at pH 8, incubation temperature of 35 °C, and reaction time of 36 h between metabolites and precursor. The as-formed MgO-NPs were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, TEM, SEM-EDX, XRD, DLS, FT-IR, and XPS analyses. These analytical techniques proved to gain crystalline, homogenous, and well-dispersed spherical MgO-NPs with an average size of 20.38 ± 9.9 nm. The potentiality of MgO-NPs was dose- and time-dependent. The biogenic MgO-NPs was found to be a promising antimicrobial agent against the pathogens including Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans with inhibition zones of 10.6 ± 0.4, 11.5 ± 0.5, 13.7 ± 0.5, 14.3 ± 0.7, and 14.7 ± 0.6 mm, respectively, at 200 μg mL-1. Moreover, MgO-NPs manifested larvicidal and adult repellence activity against Culex pipiens at very low concentrations. The highest decolorization percentages of tanning effluents were 95.6 ± 1.6% at 100 µg/ 100 mL after 180 min. At this condition, the physicochemical parameters of tannery effluents, including TSS, TDS, BOD, COD, and conductivity were reduced with percentages of 97.9%, 98.2%, 87.8%, 95.9%, and 97.3%, respectively. Moreover, the chromium ion was adsorbed with percentages of 98.2% at optimum experimental conditions.

Effects of Ag Nanoparticles on Zinc Oxide Photocatalytic Performance

We used a sol–gel spin coating technique to synthesize nanocomposite thin films based on zinc oxide (ZnO) loaded with silver nanoparticles (NPs). We tested these ZnO/Ag NPs photocatalysts, with a thickness of about 100 nm, for the photodegradation of the indigo carmine dye solution. The study focused on the effects of Ag NPs on the ZnO matrix as well as the impact of their concentration on the photocatalytic performance of the nanocomposite. The study also highlighted the high stability of the photocatalytic performance of these nanocomposites. This work is a contribution in the search for non-toxic thin film photocatalysts that is usable under solar radiation for the treatment of contaminated wastewater. Innovation in the field of heterogeneous photocatalysis requires the use of solar resource with efficient results in terms of photocatalytic performance.
