Hydrogen therapy: recent advances and emerging materials

Hydrogen therapy, leveraging its selective attenuation of hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) and ONOO-, has emerged as a pivotal pathophysiological modulator with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic attributes. Hydrogen therapy has been extensively studied both preclinically and clinically, especially in diseases with an inflammatory nature. Despite the substantial progress, challenges persist in achieving high hydrogen concentrations in target lesions, especially in cancer treatment. A notable breakthrough lies in water/acid reactive materials, offering enhanced hydrogen generation and sustained release potential. However, limitations include hydrogen termination upon material depletion and reduced bioavailability at targeted lesions. To overcome these challenges, catalytic materials like photocatalytic and sonocatalytic materials have surfaced as promising solutions. With enhanced permeability and retention effects, these materials exhibit targeted delivery and sustained stimuli-reactive hydrogen release. The future of hydrogen therapy hinges on continuous exploration and modification of catalytic materials. Researchers are urged to prioritize improved catalytic efficiency, enhanced lesion targeting effects, and heightened biosafety and biocompatibility in future development.

The role of hydrogen therapy in Alzheimer's disease management: Insights into mechanisms, administration routes, and future challenges

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder predominantly affecting the elderly. While conventional pharmacological therapies remain the primary treatment for AD, their efficacy is limited effectiveness and often associated with significant side effects. This underscores the urgent need to explore alternative, non-pharmacological interventions. Oxidative stress has been identified as a central player in AD pathology, influencing various aspects including amyloid-beta metabolism, tau phosphorylation, autophagy, neuroinflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and synaptic dysfunction. Among the emerging non-drug approaches, hydrogen therapy has garnered attention for its potential in mitigating these pathological conditions. This review provides a comprehensively overview of the therapeutic potential of hydrogen in AD. We delve into its mechanisms of action, administration routes, and discuss the current challenges and future prospects, with the aim of providing valuable insights to facilitate the clinical application of hydrogen-based therapies in AD management.

Evaluation of Application Effect of Self-Made Compression Cold Therapy in Postoperative Rehabilitation of Patients with Orthopedic Dyskinesia

With the accelerated aging of the population, orthopedic injuries have become more collective. Among them, the incidence of ankle fractures remains high. Surgery is an effective way to treat ankle fractures by utilizing special surgical site, complex anatomical structure, and specific surgical methods. With surgical approach, it is easy for basis postoperative blood loss, pain, swelling, and other problems. After surgery, most patients suffer from symptoms of fear, increased pain sensitivity, and excessive irrational concerns about physical movement or activity. Compression cold therapy combines cold therapy with air pressure therapy to ease local exudation, constrict blood vessels, improve circulation, relieve pain, and control inflammation through the effects of low temperature and pressure. Application during the rehabilitation period can prevent joint swelling, reduce muscle soreness, and promote the functional recovery of limbs, which provides an effective guarantee for postoperative rehabilitation of patients with orthopedic dyskinesia. Based on this, it is very important to evaluate the application and effect of self-made compression cold therapy in postoperative rehabilitation of patients with orthopedic dyskinesia. This work proposes a one-dimensional deep convolutional neural network-based method; DenseNet for analyzing the rehabilitation effect of patients with orthopedic dyskinesia after ankle fracture surgery. The approach is to evaluate the rehabilitation effect of self-made compression cold therapy from the perspectives of feature reuse, attention mechanism, and feature decoupling. Experiments on the dataset show that the proposed neural network has better efficacy evaluation performance. The proposed systematic assessment based on the emerging deep learning network has great significance in healthcare domain, particularly in assessing applicability, side effects, and noninvasiveness of treatment methods.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth as Potential Therapeutic Target in Parkinson's Disease

Increasing evidence suggests that the gut microbiota and the brain are closely connected via the so-called gut–brain axis. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a gut dysbiosis in which the small intestine is abundantly colonized by bacteria that are typically found in the colon. Though not a disease, it may result in intestinal symptoms caused by the accumulation of microbial gases in the intestine. Intestinal inflammation, malabsorption and vitamin imbalances may also develop. SIBO can be eradicated by one or several courses of antibiotics but reappears if the predisposing condition persists. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative proteinopathy for which disease modifying interventions are not available. Sporadic forms may start in the gut years before the development of clinical features. Increased gastrointestinal transit time is present in most people with PD early during the course of the disease, predisposing to gut dysbiosis, including SIBO. The role that gut dysbiosis may play in the etiopathogenesis of PD is not fully understood yet. Here, we discuss the possibility that SIBO could contribute to the progression of PD, by promoting or preventing neurodegeneration, thus being a potential target for treatments aiming at slowing down the progression of PD. The direct symptomatic impact of SIBO and its impact on symptomatic medication are also briefly discussed.
