Is Loneliness Associated With Celebrity Attraction in LGBT+ Persons?

The present study is a conceptual replication of the functional alternative hypothesis, which states that when it is difficult for some persons to form satisfactory interpersonal relationships they turn to parasocial relationships as a functional alternative. In this study, the Celebrity Attitude Scale (CAS), a one-item measure of interest in celebrities in general, the Five-item Adaptation of the Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale (FALS), and the Receiving Emotional Support Subscale (RESS) were administered to 222 self-identified LGBT+ and 436 self-identified heterosexual persons from the Philippines aged 18 to 77 years old. We hypothesized that sexual orientation would moderate the relationship between loneliness and celebrity worship, such that the association between loneliness and celebrity worship would be stronger among LGBT+ individuals than among heterosexual individuals. This hypothesis was confirmed when the target person was one's favorite celebrity. Second, we hypothesized that lower levels of perceived social support among LGBT+ Filipinos would be associated with a stronger correlation between loneliness and celebrity worship as compared to LGBT+ Filipinos with a higher level of social support. Third, we hypothesized that younger LGBT+ persons would have a stronger association between loneliness and celebrity worship as compared to older LGBT+ persons. Results failed to confirm the social support and age hypotheses. The findings and limitations were discussed, and suggestions for further research were noted.

Double-Edged Sisterhoods: Transgender Identity, Peer Groups and the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Transgender Girls

One of the existing gaps in the literature on the commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) of children is on transgender (trans) girls. Most of the available literature is heavily skewed toward experiences of cisgender girls. However, there is an undeniable need to understand the experiences of trans children given their unique experiences and vulnerabilities to CSE related to their identity. This article is a case study on the complex interaction between trans identity, peer influence, and other micro, meso, and macro factors that have predisposed trans girls to CSE. The paper is based on interviews with six trans girls, complemented by interviews with four social workers, research notes, and a review of related literature. Data was analyzed thematically. Based on the findings, peer groups provide critical support to trans girls, particularly, in terms of trans identity formation, gender transition information, security and protection, and other forms of support. Ironically, they play the contradictory role of priming and initiating them to CSE. Various structural and personal factors have compounded these and predisposed them to victimization. An interplay of macro (societal), meso (interpersonal), and micro (individual) factors have come into play in the commercial sexual exploitation of these trans girls.

Gender performance and migration experience of Filipino transgender women entertainers in Japan

Background: Many unrepresented stories of Filipino transgender migrant workers in Japan are significant in Filipino trans women's struggle for visibility. Aim: This study aims to explore how migration and gender performance influence the gender affirmation of Filipino trans women or transpinay entertainers in Japan. Method: This study draws on a qualitative approach using grounded theory to collect data between 2012 and 2018 through participant observations and semi-structured interviews in Manila, Cebu, and Japan. Through snowball sampling and ties with the LGBTQ community, 14 participants shared their narratives that revolved around their background, gender identity, visa and job application process, entertainment work, and relationships before, during, and after migration. Results: The transpinays' migration experience is influential in their gender affirmation as in Japan and upon their return to the Philippines. The transpinay entertainers migrate to Japan is not solely for economic reasons; they also seek sexual emancipation. Before moving to Japan, they negotiate their gender identity to pass the auditions and apply for an entertainer visa. During their migration, doing and undoing gender is woven into their lives with their intersecting subordinate identities as a Filipino transgender woman and a migrant worker, resulting into an intersectional invisibility. Their entertainer profile as a Filipino transgender woman is an embodiment of gendered performances and ethnicity. Transpinay entertainers returned several times or chose to stay in Japan because they were marginalized in their home country. Conclusion: The transpinay entertainers provide a significant case for highlighting the temporal aspect of their gender performance and migration experience, in which their commitment toward entertainment work transforms over time. The migration experience in Japan indicates a positive outcome in their gender affirmation that does not necessarily lead to gender confirmation surgery.

'For me… it's a miracle': Injecting beauty among kathoeis in a provincial Thai city

BACKGROUND

The Thai term kathoei refers to non-gender-normative females, males and intersexual individuals at different stages of the transitional spectrum with recognized social and cultural roles in society. Nevertheless, kathoeis are only tolerated in Thai society. Many kathoeis seek social acceptance through beauty and turn to the off-label injection of various 'beauty drugs'.

METHODS

The first author conducted an ethnographic study of injection parties at a wedding studio in a Central Thai provincial city between April and September 2011. Data were gathered through participant observation, focus group discussions and narrative interviews with six participants. All data were collected and analyzed in Thai, and later translated.

RESULTS

While injection parties provide opportunities for kathoeis to socialize, bond, and share experiential knowledge on chemically assisted transformation, they also reproduce ideologies of gender, beauty and sexuality that reinforce the notion that if a kathoei is to maintain her beauty, she must use medicines more frequently and in higher doses.

CONCLUSION

Injection parties among Thai kathoeis feature drug use that is entirely reasonable in terms of their own lay knowledge. Empowering kathoeis, by providing accessible information on chemicals and health in a way that reflects the complexity and diversity of their practices, would be one way to reduce health risks. Society must give more long-term options to kathoeis to build their sense of self, based on things besides being beautiful.

Spanish adolescents' attitudes toward transpeople: proposal and validation of a short form of the Genderism and Transphobia Scale

The aim of the present study was to develop and validate a short form of the Genderism and Transphobia Scale and assess adolescents' attitudes toward transpeople. A total of 800 Spanish adolescents aged between 14 and 18 years (50.70% girls, 49.30% boys) completed the Spanish version of the scale and other related questionnaires. The short form of the scale is composed of 12 items clustered into two factors (Transphobia/Genderism and Gender Bashing) that explain 54.22% of the variance. All the items showed good discriminating power, and the present scale demonstrated adequate reliability and validity. In the study, boys exhibited significantly more negative attitudes toward transpeople than girls did, both in the affective/cognitive dimension (Transphobia/Genderism) and in the behavioral dimension (Gender Bashing). Moreover, adolescents showed significantly more negative attitudes toward gender-nonconforming men than toward gender-nonconforming women. These results are discussed in terms of their relevance to the maintenance of discriminatory attitudes toward sexual diversity.

Health benefits of legal services for criminalized populations: the case of people who use drugs, sex workers and sexual and gender minorities

Social exclusion and legal marginalization are important determinants of health outcomes for people who use illicit drugs, sex workers, and persons who face criminal penalties because of homosexuality or transgenderism. Incarceration may add to the health risks associated with police repression and discrimination for these persons. Access to legal services may be essential to positive health outcomes in these populations. Through concrete examples, this paper explores types of legal problems and legal services linked to health outcomes for drug users, sex workers, and sexual minorities and makes recommendations for donors, legal service providers, and civil society organizations.
