Enhancing School Counselor Preparation for Work with LGBTQ Students: Developmental Strategies and Interventions

Perception and Experience of Sexual and Gender Minority Korean Youth in School Counseling

To comprehensively explore the school counseling experience of sexual and gender minority (SGM) youths in South Korea, we interviewed 14 SGM youths about their school counseling experience and the climate of their schools toward SGM. Results showed that a hostile school climate and the accessibility, confidentiality, trustworthiness, and LGBTQ competency of school counselors drove the reluctance of these youths to receive school counseling services. Implications for the role of school counseling services for SGM youths were discussed based on the findings of this work and the suggestions offered by the interviewed SGM youths.

Parental Attitudes Towards Inclusiveness Instrument (PATII): Psychometric evaluation of a new instrument measuring parental beliefs about gender and sexuality diversity inclusions in schools

Despite ad hoc claims that parents often are in opposition to a schooling curriculum that is inclusive of gender and sexuality diversity, there exists no research to date that has canvassed the reasons why parents may oppose or support such educational policy via a psychometrically sound instrument. The aim of the present study was to address this gap by developing and testing a new, multidimensional measure of the theorized nature of parental attitudes towards inclusiveness, the Parental Attitudes Towards Inclusiveness Instrument (PATII). The pilot sample of 998 parents who had a child attending school in any grade from Kindergarten to Year 12 were drawn from the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (U.S.) via the online recruitment platform, Prolific. The PATII was evaluated for its reliability using McDonald's omega, construct and criterion validity, and measurement invariance utilizing exploratory structural equation modelling (ESEM), with initial ESEM analyses also compared to traditional confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) methods. Scores derived from this measure and inferences based upon those scores were reliable, valid, and also invariant across sex, religiosity, and nationality groups within this sample. Parental sex, religiosity, and nationality group membership were differentially correlated with support for and opposition to an inclusive curriculum. Lastly, the criterion validity of the PATII was supported, with the instrument's factors differentially correlated to parents' desired providers of inclusive education as predicted. Future national and international use of the PATII offers a critical first step to informing school and curriculum policy on inclusivity.

School counselor advocacy for gender minority students

One-thousand-one-hundred-and-ninety-one school counselors completed an online survey regarding advocacy for and with gender minority students comprising transgender and intersex students (school counselor gender minority advocacy competence). School counselors completed a battery of three competency-based assessments to assess their levels of gender identity counselor competence, intersex counselor competence, and school counselor gender minority advocacy competence. They also completed a demographic form so that competency levels could be examined with demographic variables. Attitudes, school level placement, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity counselor competence, and intersex counselor competence were significantly related to advocacy for and with gender minority students. These findings have implications for the application of identity behavior theory to examine the experiences and behaviors of minoritized individuals and those who advocate for them. These advocates include school counselors and other helping professionals who work with gender minority students.
