"I Don't Want to Have Sex as a Woman": A Qualitative Study Exploring Sexuality and Sexual Practices of Drag Queens in Germany

Drag queens are typically gay men who perform as caricature-like women. They thereby publicly challenge "naturally" binary gender role categories, though it remains unclear how that interplays with their private (e.g., sexual) lives. This study seeks to answer this question by exploring the sexuality and sexual practices of drag queens. Employing a critical realist approach, ten semi-structured interviews were conducted in Germany, with questions focusing on the drag queens' views on sexuality and sexual positioning. By adopting a thematic analysis, three main themes were identified: natural versus artificial identity; advocacy for sexuality; and rejection of heteronormativity. Results suggest that the primary intention of drag queens is to challenge heteronorms, while they regularly adhered to these privately. This illustrates the distinction made by the participants between their "public" persona, an artificial character that lacks sexuality, and their "private" life (e.g., sexual practices), shaped by an "inborn" sexuality.

Geographic Distributions of Drag Performers Relative to Urban Centers: Implications for Health

LGB people may become less accessible to health professionals as technology reshapes LGB social connections. Though electronic forms of health promotion are effective, some interventions must be delivered in person. We use GIS to analyze characteristics (e.g., gender identity, depression, and performance involvement) shared by 114 gay, cisgender male drag performers. We used geographic ordinary least squares (OLS) regression to identify spatial relationships based on participant distance from urban centers. Participants lived between 1.73 km (1.07 mi) and 762.77 km (101.14 mi) from the nearest urban center (Mdn = 16.60 km; 10.31 mi). We found a positive correlation between distance from the nearest urban center and performance involvement (R = 0.19, p ≤ 0.05). Results indicate that drag performers are widely disbursed relative to urban centers and that drag involvement provides motivation to travel to gay bars. Health professionals with in person services may use drag shows and related performances to access LGB populations.

Predictors of disordered eating and acceptance of cosmetic surgery among drag queen performers

In this study, we examined the relations between drag queens' gendered performance styles and body change attitudes and behaviors. We also examined potential mediating and moderating variables in these links via two moderated mediation models. Participants consisted of 192 drag queen performers who completed a web-based survey. Hyper-feminine but not gender fluid drag was positively related to disordered eating, acceptance of cosmetic surgery, internalization of cultural standards of beauty, and upward appearance comparison. Both internalization of cultural standards of beauty and upward appearance comparison mediated the hyper-feminine drag and disordered eating link. Beauty internalization also mediated the hyper-feminine drag and acceptance of cosmetic surgery link but upward appearance comparison did not. We discovered two significant conditional indirect effects, in which the indirect effect of the hyper-feminine drag on both disordered eating and acceptance of cosmetic surgery via internalization of cultural standards of beauty were stronger for those with high levels of drag identity salience. Finally, we found a conditional direct effect, where hyper-feminine drag predicted acceptance of cosmetic surgery among drag queens with high and average levels of drag identity salience but not low levels.
