Abstract
INTRODUCTION Breast cancer remains the predominant cancer among females, accounting for about 24.2% of all cancer cases. Alarmingly, it is the primary cause of cancer-related mortality in women under 45. METHODS This research analyzed RNA sequencing data from 1082 TCGA-BRCA and 107 GSE58812 breast cancer patients. Single-cell RNA data from five patients in the GSE118389 data set were also studied. Using Random forest and COX regression, we developed a prognostic model. Pathway analysis employed GSVA and GO, while immune profiles were assessed via ssGSEA and MCPcounter. Mutation patterns utilized maftools, and drug sensitivity scores were derived from the GDSC database with oncoPredict. RESULTS Analysis of the GSE118389 data set identified three distinct cell types: immune, epithelial, and stromal. P53 and VEGF were notably enriched. Five key genes (TMEM251, ADAMTSL2, CDC123, PSMD1, TLE1) were pinpointed for their prognostic significance. We introduced a disulfidptosis-associated score as a novel risk factor for breast cancer prognosis. Survival outcomes varied significantly between training and validation sets. Comprehensive immune profiling revealed no difference in activated CD8-positive T cells between risk groups, but a positive correlation of NK cells, neutrophils, cytotoxic lymphocytes, and monocytic cells with the riskscore was noted. Importantly, a negative association between the drug Nelarabine and riskscore was identified. CONCLUSION This research underscores the significance of a disulfidptosis-associated gene signature in breast cancer prognosis.

Abstract
Background Mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most common cutaneous T-cell lymphoma with unknown etiopathogenesis. Oxidant and antioxidant balance is important for cell function and normal metabolism. An imbalance between pro-oxidants and antioxidants causes oxidative stress. A recent focus has been on thiol/disulphide homeostasis as a novel marker of oxidative stress. Aims and Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the role of oxidative stress in MF by analysing thiol/disulphide homeostasis. Materials and Methods A total of 103 patients (48 female, 55 male) and a control group of 120 healthy individuals (48 female, 72 male) from two tertiary care hospitals were included in our study. Serum native thiol, total thiol and disulphide levels were evaluated using novel method developed by Erel and Neeliolu. Results Native thiol levels were 340.30 ± 87.44 in the patient group and 401.62 ± 69.45 in the control group. Total thiol value was 374.17 ± 87.78 in the patient group and 428.54 ± 70.05 in the control group. Native thiol and total thiol levels were significantly lower in the patient group compared to the control group (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001). The disulphide value was 16.93 ± 6.46 in the patient group and 13.46 ± 5.06 in the control group. Disulphide levels were found to be significantly higher in the patient group compared to the control group (P < 0.001). Conclusions In our study, thiol/disulphide balance shifted towards disulphide which indicates the presence of oxidative stress especially in the early stage while 93.2% of our patients had early-stage MF. We think that this may have pathogenetic and prognostic significance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory cutaneous disease that can be associated with cardiometabolic disorders. Oxidative stress is included in the pathogenesis of rosacea, and thiol-disulfide homeostasis (TDH) acts as antioxidants. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the TDH and metabolic parameters in patients with rosacea. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 42 rosacea patients and 50 controls participated in this prospective study. Demographic data, clinical entities, anthropometric measurements, and laboratory findings were recorded. Additionally, TDH was measured by an automated spectrophotometric method. RESULTS Rosacea patients had greater body mass index values (27.9 ± 5.2 kg/m² vs. 23 ± 1.4 kg/m², p < 0.001), waist-hip ratios (0.87 ± 0.1 vs. 0.77 ± 0.8, p < 0.001), and insulin resistance (3.0 ± 2.0 vs. 1.3 ± 0.5, p < 0.001) compared with controls. Disulfide levels, the disulfide/native thiol ratio (DNTR), and the disulfide/total thiol ratio (DTTR) were increased (p < 0.05) in rosacea patients. Native thiol and total thiol levels and the native/total thiol ratio (NTTR) were decreased in rosacea patients (p < 0.05). Different rosacea subtypes had no effect on oxidative stress markers. The duration of illness and insulin resistance values significantly correlated with DNTR and DTTR in the rosacea group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Rosacea has a metabolic milieu with increased oxidative stress and insulin resistance.

Abstract
To assess the distinctiveness of serum native thiol (NT), total thiol (TT) and disulfide (SS) levels in PCa patients, we created a new parameter, prostate thiol index (PTI) [tPSA (TTxPVxAge) -1/2 ]. We determined the performance of the PTI on PCa diagnosis. A total of 107 male patients (PCa:65; BPH:42) who were separated according to their Gleason scores, ISUP grades and EAU risk groups and 20 healthy subjects were included. The performances of the tests were determined. The PCa and BPH groups had lower NT and TT levels and higher SS levels than the control group. PCa patients had higher PTI, tPSA, fPSA, PSAD levels, lower fPSA%, PV and PSA-AV levels than BPH patients. TT, PTI, tPSA, fPSA, fPSA%, PSA-AV, PSAD and PV had significant diagnostic performances. PTI had the highest AUC value and accuracy, PSA-AV had the highest specificity, and fPSA had the lowest sensitivity. The performance of the PTI was the best in distinguishing PCa from BPH. PTI, tPSA and PSAD positively and PSA-AV negatively correlated with ISUP grades and EAU groups. TT can contribute to the discrimination of PCa from BPH and PTI may decrease unnecessary biopsies in clinical practice.

Abstract
Background. The pathogenesis of chronic spontaneous urticaria involves metabolic, immunological, and psychological factors. The thiol–disulfide exchange reactions could be a mechanism to counteract oxidative stress in patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria. Objective: The assessment of thiol–disulfide homeostasis parameters (TDHPs) according to disease severity and the influence of H1-antihistamine therapy in patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria. Material and method. We have included 30 patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria in the study and we have determined the levels of native thiol, total thiol, disulfides as well as the disulfide/native thiol ratio, disulfide/total thiol ratio and the native thiol/total thiol ratio, before and after therapy with H1-antihistamines. Results. The results of the study showed altered levels of TDHPs and their normalization after treatment with H1-antihistamines in patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria. We determined a statistically significant increase in the serum levels of total thiol, native thiol, and native thiol/total thiol ratio and a significant reduction in the levels of disulfides, disulfide/native thiol ratio and disulfide/total thiol ratio after treatment with H1-antihistamines. The normalization of the serum levels of TDHPs has been associated with the relief of symptoms and reduction or resolution of pruritus and urticarial plaques. Conclusion. These results suggest the involvement of thiol–disulfide homeostasis in the defense against the harmful effects of reactive oxygen species in patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria and the potential role of TDHPs in monitoring H1-antihistamine therapy. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study investigating TDHPs in patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria before and after treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate serum thiol disulphide levels in patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) compared with a healthy control group and to investigate whether thiol/disulphide balance can be used as a new marker of oxidative stress in CL patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS This prospective study included 47 patients diagnosed with CL and 46 healthy individuals without any disease. Native thiol, disulphide and total thiol levels were used in plasma. Disulphide/total thiol, disulphide/native thiol and native thiol/total thiol levels were measured. RESULTS Disulphide, native thiol disulphide and total thiol disulphide levels were significantly lower in CL patients compared with the control group. However, there was no statistically significant difference between CL patients and the control group in terms of disulphide/native thiol, disulphide/total thiol and native thiol/total thiol values. CONCLUSION Based on the data in our study, it can be said that the use of thiol/disulphide balance as a new oxidative stress marker in CL patients is not appropriate, but studies with a larger number of patients are needed.

Abstract
Serum Total Thiol (TT), Native Thiol (NT), and Disulfide (SS) levels were found significantly lower in benign proliferative pathologies and cancer disease compared to healthy subjects. We conducted this prospective study to investigate the possible predictive and prognostic significance of these markers in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), which is one of the most associated cancers with oxidative stress. This was a non-randomized, prospective, and case-control study of 120 subjects, including 60 patients with metastatic or inoperable NSCLC at the time of diagnosis and 60 demographically-matched controls. Morning fasting venous blood serum samples from both NSCLC and control group were stored at -80 °C for equal periods and then TT, NT, and SS levels were measured spectrophotometrically. Serum TT, NT, and SS levels were compared between groups and their relationships with demographic features and survival of NSCLC patients were analyzed. In results, Serum TT, NT, and SS levels were significantly lower in NSCLC patients than those in control group, with a low SS level being an independent indicator of poor survival.

Abstract
Dynamic thiol-disulfide homeostasis (TDH) is a new area has begun to attract more scrutiny. Dynamic TDH is reversal of thiol oxidation in proteins and represents the status of thiols (-SH) and disulfides (-S-S-). Organic compounds containing the sulfhydryl group is called thiol, composed of sulfur and hydrogen atoms. Disulfides are the most important class of dynamic, redox responsive covalent bonds build in between two thiol groups. For many years, thiol levels were analyzed by several methods. During last years, measurements of disulfide levels have been analyzed by a novel automated method, developed by Erel and Neselioglu. In this method, addition to thiol (termed as native thiol) levels, disulfide levels were also measured and sum of native thiol and disulfide levels were termed as total thiol. Therefore, TDH was begun to be understood in organism. In healthy humans, TDH is maintained within a certain range. Dysregulated dynamic TDH has been implicated several disorders with unknown etiology. A growing body of evidence has demonstrated that the thiol-disulfide homeostasis is involved in variety diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, nonsmall cell lung cancer, familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), inflammatory bowel diseases, occupational diseases, gestational diabetes mellitus and preeclampsia. These results may elucidate some pathogenic mechanism or may be a predictor indicating diagnostic clue, prognostic marker or therapeutic sign. In conclusion, protection of the thiol-disulfide homeostasis is of great importance for the human being. Evidence achieved so far has proposed that thiol-disulfide homeostasis is an important issue needs to elucidate wholly.

Abstract
The objective of our study was to determine thiol/disulphide homeostasis in recurrent aphtous stomatitis (RAS) patients. A prospective monocentric study was designed. Forty-three recurrent aphtous stomatitis patients and 43 healthy subjects were included to study. Venous blood samples collected and assessed with novel automatic system. Results compared statistically. Disulphide levels were found significantly higher in RAS patients than control group. There was no significant difference between native thiol and total thiol levels. Thiol/disulphide homeostasis is impaired in RAS patients in favor of disulphide levels compared with control group. To the best of our knowledge, the present study is the first examination on the correlation between thiol and disulfide homeostasis in patients with RAS.

Abstract
AIM The evaluation of dynamic thiol-disulfide homeostasis among patients with the cancer of the uterine cervix. METHODS The study was conducted in 62 cervical cancer patients and 61 healthy women who had been followed up in an obstetrics and gynecology clinic between September 2018 and April 2020. Serum disulfide, native thiol, total thiol, ischemia modified-albumin, total antioxidant and oxidant capacities, and oxidative stress index values were measured in all participants. RESULTS The mean plasma disulfide levels of the cervical cancer group was statistically significantly higher than that of the control group (25.79 ± 6.90 μmol/L, 22.31 ± 6.11 μmol/L, respectively) (P = 0.004). Plasma native thiol and total thiol levels were lower in cervical cancer patients (299.27 ± 99.05 μmol/L and 350.86 ± 102.72 μmol/L, respectively) compared to controls, but no statistically significant difference was observed (318.00 ± 93.75 μmol/L and 376.44 ± 98.51 μmol/L, respectively) (P = 0.284, P = 0.161). With respect to the ischemia modified-albumin level, no statistically significant difference was observed between two groups. There were statistically significant positive association between disulfide level and both the stage of cervical cancer (r = 0.278, P = 0.029) and total oxidant capacity level (r = 0.256, P = 0.046). CONCLUSION Dynamic thiol-disulfide homeostasis may participate in the pathophysiological mechanisms of cervical cancer and may be a potential biomarker for early identification of cervical cancer in future.

Abstract
Introduction Psoriasis is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease with unknown etiopathogenesis. Aim To examine the thiol/disulfide balance in psoriasis patients and to compare the results with a healthy control group. Material and methods Eighty patients with psoriasis and 80 healthy individuals who were age- and gender-matched with these patients were included in this study. Serum native thiol, disulfide and total thiol levels were measured by a new automated method developed by Erel and Neselioglu. Disulphide/total thiol, disulphide/native thiol and native thiol/total thiol were calculated. Results While there was no statistically significant difference in terms of disulphide levels (SS) between the patient and control groups (p > 0.05), there were significant differences in terms of total thiol and native thiol (SH) levels, SS/SH, SS/total thiol and SH/total thiol ratios between the patient and control groups (p < 0.05). There was a statistically significant relationship between duration of the disease and the disulfide/native thiol ratio (p > 0.05). Conclusions In recent years, there have been few studies on the role of oxidative stress in the etiopathogenesis of psoriasis. In this study, we investigated in psoriasis patients, thiol/disulfide balance as a new oxidative stress marker. The results were compared with a healthy control group. Our results showed that thiol/disulphide balance shifted towards disulphide in psoriasis patients. This is important as a finding that supports the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of psoriasis.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the ability of thiol-disulphide homeostasis to predict renal injury in ureteral obstruction by matching renal scintigraphy and pathological findings in an experimental rat model. METHODS 24 rats were randomized and divided into 3 groups as sham, partial and complete. Blood samples for biochemical evaluations and dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) renal scintigraphy were performed at the beginning and on the 7th day postoperatively. Only a midline abdominal incision was done in sham group. Left ureter of partial group was dissected and gently buried into the psoas muscle. In complete group, left ureter was dissected and ligated. RESULTS Statistically significant association was found between left kidney function loss percentage, native thiol, total thiol and creatinine alterations and pathological EGTI (Endothelial, Glomerular, Tubular, Interstitial) scores (r = - 0.867, r = - 0.815, r = 0.745, r = - 0.911; p = 0.000). Statistically significant difference was detected between groups in terms of postoperative native thiol and total thiol values (p = 0.000, p = 0.001). There was also a significant difference in preoperative and postoperative comparisons of these parameters in partial and complete obstruction groups (p = 0.012, p = 0.018). There was a significant difference in terms of postoperative disulphide/native thiol and native thiol/total thiol ratios in complete obstruction group compared to other groups (p1 = 0.011, p2 = 0.040; p1 = 0.015, p2 = 0.028). CONCLUSIONS Association with scintigraphic and pathological results empowers the value of this parameter. Disulphide/native thiol and native thiol/total thiol ratios indicate complete obstruction. These findings may shed light to more comprehensive studies.

Abstract
Background: Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease, in which many endogenous and exogenous factors play a role. Recent studies have shown that oxidative stress increases in these patients. The role of the dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostasis, an important component of the oxidative stress, in the pathogenesis of seborrheic dermatitis has not yet been investigated. Objectives: The objective was to investigate the relationship between the dynamic thiol/disulfide balance in the plasma of seborrheic dermatitis patients and disease severity. Methods: In this case–control study, 70 seborrheic dermatitis patients and 61 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were included. Thiol/disulfide homeostasis was calculated from venous blood samples, and tests were performed by automated spectrophotometric method. The thiol/disulfide balance between the patient and control groups was compared. In addition, disease severity and other demographic characteristics and thiol/disulfide balance parameters were compared. Results: Native and total thiols were significantly higher in the patient group than that in the control group (P < 0.001). Disulfide levels were nonsignificantly lower in the patient group than controls (P = 0.821). Patients' age and age at the onset of disease were found to have a negative correlation with native and total thiol levels. Conclusion: Higher levels of thiols in the serum may be responsible for the increased proliferation of seborrheic dermatitis lesions. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first report on the correlation between thiol/disulfide homeostasis in patients with seborrheic dermatitis.

Abstract
Background This study planned to investigate the relationship of dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostasis with the prognosis of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Methods 80 patients who had been diagnosed with MDS between 2012 and 2017 and who were older than 18 were included in the study together with 80 healthy control subjects. The MDS diagnosis was confirmed using bone marrow aspiration-biopsy immunostaining. Dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostasis and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels were examined. Results The average IMA (0.71±0.08 vs. 0.67±0.09; p=0.002), median disulfide (18.0 vs. 11.6; p<0.001), median disulfide/native thiol (6 vs. 3; p<0.001), and median disulfide/total thiol (5.4 vs. 2.9; p<0.001) were found higher in the MDS patients compared to control group, and the median hemoglobin, median white blood cell count, median neutrophil count, median lymphocyte count, average native thiol (290.7±48.5 vs. 371.5±103.8; p<0.001), average total thiol (328.2±48.9 vs. 393±105.5; p<0.001), and average native thiol/total thiol (%) (88.3±4.3 vs. 94.2±2.1; p<0.001) were found to below. Risk factors such as collagen tissue disease (HR:9.17; p=0.005), MDS-EB-1 (HR:10.14; p=0.032), MDS-EB-2 (HR:18.2; p=0.043), and disulfide/native thiol (HR:1.17; p=0.023) were found as the independent predictors anticipating progression to acute myeloid leukemia. In the Cox regression model, risk factors such as age (HR:1.05; p=0.002), MDS-EB-1 (HR:12.58; p<0.001), MDS-EB-2 (HR:5.75; p=0.033), disulfide/native thiol (HR:1.14; p=0.040), and hemoglobin (HR:0.64; p=0.007) were found as predictors anticipating for mortality. Conclusions We can argue that dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostasis could have significant effects on both the etiopathogenesis and the survival of patients with MDS, and it could be included in new prognostic scoring systems.

Abstract
Background In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of thiol-disulfide homeostasis in patients undergoing on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting. Methods Between January 2018 and October 2018, a total of 51 patients (43 males, 8 females; mean age 61.8±8.7 years; range, 38 to 78 years) who underwent isolated on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting were included. Thiol-disulfide homeostasis parameters were studied in the preoperative period (T1), 30 min after the removal of cross-clamp (T2), and postoperative sixth h (T3). Hemodynamic parameters such as atrial fibrillation and inotropic support requirement of the patients were evaluated in the postoperative period. Results There were significant differences in the measured thiol-disulfide homeostasis parameters at different time points of surgery (p<0.001). Binary logistic regression analysis showed that T2-disulfide/native thiol ratio was an independent predictor of the development of postoperative atrial fibrillation (p=0.042). There were positive and significant correlations between the T2-disulfide levels and cross-clamp time (r:0.307, p=0.029). Conclusion Thiol-disulfide homeostasis in patients undergoing on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting changes toward to disulfide. Disulfide levels increase in parallel with prolonged ischemia time. Decreased native thiol and increased disulfide levels during ischemic period may be predictive of postoperative atrial fibrillation.

Abstract
Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and tuberous sclerosis (TSC) are autosomal dominant neurocutaneous diseases. Epilepsy, malignancy and other neurological complications are common in both diseases. We aimed to investigate the thiol/disulphide balance as an oxidative stress marker in children who suffer from NF1 and TSC. Twenty-two patients with NF1, 20 TCS, and 22 healthy control subjects were included in the study. The total thiol, native thiol, and disulphide levels were measured and the disulphide/native thiol, disulphide/total thiol and native thiol/total thiol ratios were calculated and compared in three groups. The mean age and sex distribution of the patients with TSC and NF1 and the healthy control were similar. The total thiol, native thiol, and disulfide level was lower in TSC and NF1 group than the healthy control group. There were no significant differences among disulphide/native thiol and disulphide/total thiol ratios of three groups. We detected that the total thiol, native thiol, and disulfide levels were lower in TSC and NF1 group than the healthy control group. These results indicate that dynamic thiol-disulphide homeostasis can be used as a marker of oxidative stress in clinical trials with TSC and NF1.

Abstract
Purpose A dynamic thiol/disulfide balance is pivotal in organizing anti-oxidant defense, detoxification, apoptosis, and enzyme activities, as well as transcription and cellular signal-transfer mechanisms. The connection between urolithiasis and oxidant/antioxidant status, which can be assessed through thiol-disulfide homeostasis (TDH), has not yet been examined. In this study, we evaluated the effects of TDH on the formation, size, and location of stones by examining the associations between TDH parameters and urolithiasis. Materials and Methods Patients with urolithiasis and healthy controls were recruited. The patients were divided into subgroups in terms of stone size (>15 mm or ≤15 mm) and stone location (nephrolithiasis or ureterolithiasis). TDH parameters were measured using a novel automatic and spectrophotometric method and compared statistically. Results TDH parameters were different between the urolithiasis and control groups. TDH tended towards the disulfide side in the urolithiasis group. Stone size increased an average 0.14 mm with a 1 µmol/L increase in disulfide level and decreased an average 0.058 mm with a 1 µmol/L increase in native thiol level. Disulfide and native thiol levels were found to be different across patients with stone size >15 mm, ≤15 mm, and controls (p<0.001 and p<0.001, respectively). However, the nephrolithiasis and ureterolithiasis groups were similar in respect of TDH parameters. Conclusions In this study, it was found that patients with urolithiasis displayed oxidative stress characterized by a TDH tendency towards the disulfide side, and an inadequate antioxidant response identified by a lower level of native thiol as compared with healthy controls.

Abstract
The etiology of sudden hearing loss (SHL) has not been fully elucidated. Previous studies claimed that different etiological factors may play a role in the pathogenesis of SHL. The aim of the present study is to investigate the presence of oxidative stress (OS) in SHL cases using thiol-disulfide balance. In addition, total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), oxidative stress index (OSI) and lipid hydroperoxide levels (LOOH) were investigated. A total of 30 cases (15 female, 15 male, mean age 48.9 ± 8.1 years, age range: 36-68 years) were included in the study. Thiol and disulfide amounts, thiol/disulfide ratios, TOS, TAS, OSI and LOOH scores of the case group and control group were compared. Native thiol (SH) and total thiol (SH + SH) values were significantly lower in the SHL group than in the control group (p = 0.028 and p = 0.044, respectively). The LOOH value, TOS value and OSI value were significantly higher in the SHL group than in the control group (all p values < 0.05). The TAS value was significantly lower in the SHL group than in the control group (p = 0.0001). The present study has presented that the thiol-disulfide balance was impaired in SHL cases. OS may play a role in the development of SHL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rosacea is the chronic inflammatory disease of the facial skin. Although its aetiology is not clear yet, inflammatory processes triggered by oxidative stress and oxidation of lipids have been suggested to play a role. While studies on the relationship between inflammation and oxidative stress are ongoing, thiol metabolism and its role in oxidative stress have also begun to be investigated. Thiols are among the key molecules of protein metabolism in the organism and they are the firstly consumed antioxidants in case of oxidative stress. Thiols regulate intracellular redox metabolism and protect keratinocytes against the results of oxidative alterations in the stratum corneum. There is a balance known as dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostasis between thiols and their oxidized forms; disulfides. AIM This study aimed to determine the effects of oxidative stress on protein metabolism in rosacea patients by investigating thiol/disulfide homeostasis using a newly developed and fully automated method. Determination of plasma thiol levels provides important clues regarding the extent of free radical-mediated oxidation of proteins causing damage in rosacea. METHODS The study included 50 rosacea patients who were diagnosed clinically or histopathologically with rosacea and 42 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. Plasma levels of native thiol, total thiol, and disulfide were determined. The following ratios were calculated: disulfide/native thiol ratio, disulfide/total thiol ratio, and native thiol/total thiol ratio. RESULTS The mean age was 41.8 ± 10.5 in the rosacea patients (35 females) and 42.5 ± 10.3 years in the control group (33 females). The mean disulfide level was found to be significantly higher in the rosacea patients than in the control group (23.4 ± 5.5 µM/L and 17.3 ± 6.2µM/L, respectively; p < 0.001). The mean disulfide/native thiol ratio (0.055 ± 0.016 vs. 0.041 ± 0.017) and the mean disulfide/total thiol ratio (0.049 ± 0.012 vs.0.037 ± 0.013) were significantly higher and the mean native thiol/total thiol ratio (0.884 ± 0.118 vs. 0.923 ± 0.027) was significantly lower in the patients as compared with the controls (p < 0.05 for all). CONCLUSION In rosacea patients, the thiol/disulfide balance was observed to shift towards disulfides, which could be considered an indicator of oxidative stress in rosacea.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Lichen planus (LP) is an autoimmune inflammatory disease of the mucocutaneous tissue, whose exact pathological course remains unclear. Abnormal thiol/disulfide homeostasis has been postulated to be responsible for a number of diseases predominated by chronic inflammation. To be able to contribute complicated and unclear pathogenesis of LP, we aimed to investigate dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostasis in patients with LP, using an original automated method developed by Erel and Neselioglu in this study. METHODS The study group consisted of 81 unrelated patients with LP and 80 unrelated healthy controls with no LP lesions in their personal history or on clinical examination. Thiol/disulphide homeostasis tests have been measured with a novel automatic spectrophotometric method developed and the results have been compared statistically. RESULTS Native thiol and total thiol levels were found as significantly higher in patients with LP than the control group (P = 0.026 and 0.035, respectively). There was no significant difference between the disulfide levels of the patients with LP and the control group. CONCLUSIONS We provide evidence that that thiol/disulphide homeostasis impaired in favor of thiol levels in LP patients compared to the control group based on the data of our study. To the best of our knowledge, the present study is the first examination on the correlation between thiol and disulfide homeostasis in patients with LP.

Abstract
Introduction Vitiligo is an acquired depigmentation disorder with melanocyte destruction. Aim To examine the thiol/disulphide balance in vitiligo patients and to compare the results with a healthy control group. Material and methods Thirty-two patients with vitiligo and 35 healthy individuals were included in the study. Native thiol, disulfide and total thiol levels in plasma were evaluated using a new and automated spectrophotometric method. Disulphide/total thiol, disulphide/native thiol and native thiol/total thiol levels were measured. Results There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups when the patient and control groups were compared in terms of thiol/disulphide balance (p > 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in native thiol, disulphide and total thiol levels for vitiligo when compared with the control group (p > 0.005). Conclusions In recent years, there have been numerous studies on the role of oxidative stress in the etiopathogenesis of vitiligo. In this study, we investigated in vitiligo patients whether thiol/disulphide balance is a new oxidative stress marker. The results were compared with a healthy control group. We measured the thiol/disulphide balance by a new method developed by Erel and Neselioglu. The serum thiol/disulphide levels were similar in the vitiligo patients and the control subjects, which indicated that the thiol/disulphide balance was not affected by vitiligo. We are of the opinion that new investigations to determine serum levels of thiol/disulphide may shed light on the possible roles of these molecules in vitiligo.

Abstract
Aim of the study We aim to examine the relation between thiol/disulphide homeostasis and transrectal ultrasound guided prostate biopsy (TRUS-Bx) results and evaluate whether it was effective on the distinction of benign and malign prostate disease. Material and methods The study included 29 men histopathologically diagnosed as prostate adenocancer (Pca) (group 1), 30 men having benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) (group 2) and age match 30 healthy individuals in the control group (group 3). Thiol/disulphide homeostasis was measured using a novel automatic and spectrophotometric method. Results Among the three groups, a statistically significant difference was detected among native thiol, total thiol levels and disulphide/total thiol, disulphide/native thiol and native thiol/total thiol ratios which are thiol/disulphide homeostasis parameters apart from disulphide (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001 respectively). Additionally, no significant difference was detected in albumin and total protein levels among the groups (p = 0.223, p = 0.316 respectively). Serum native and total thiol levels were high and disulphide level was low in group 1 when compared to the group 2 (p = 0.003, p = 0.007, p = 0.265 respectively). In addition, serum native thiol, total thiol and disulphide levels were low in group 1 when compared to the group 3, but while low native and total thiol levels were significant, low disulphide levels were not found significant (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.331, respectively). Conclusions Thiol/disulphide homeostasis was found to be disturbed in Pca patients detected with TRUS-Bx. This is suggesting serum native thiol, total thiol level and ratios provides a novel biomarker for the role for oxidative stress in disease etiopathogenesis.

Abstract
Introduction Tinea versicolor is a superficial fungal infection caused by Malassezia spp. Malassezia spp. is a member of the normal human skin flora. It becomes a pathogen by transforming from the yeast form to the mycelium form. The oxidant/antioxidant homeostasis may be responsible for this. Thiol/disulphide homeostasis is a new marker indicating oxidative stress. This homeostasis is affected in many illnesses. Aim To investigate the thiol/disulphide homeostasis in patients with tinea versicolor. Material and methods Forty-two patients with tinea versicolor (median age: 36 years, min.–max.: 19–58) and 36 healthy controls (median age: 32 years, min.–max.: 18–60) were included in the trial. The levels of native thiol, disulphide, and total thiol were measured by an automated method in the patient and control groups. Disulphide/total thiol, disulphide/native thiol and native thiol/total thiol rates were calculated as percentage. Results For the patient group and the control group, the native thiol levels were found to be 464.32 ±51.48 mmol/l and 465.18 ±51.32 mmol/l, disulphide levels – 19.80 ±7.08 mmol/l and 21.27 ±8.90 mmol/l, total thiol levels – 503.92 ±53.65 mmol/l and 508.07 ±56.59 mmol/l, respectively. No statistical difference was detected between the two groups. Conclusions Thiol/disulphide homeostasis was not affected in tinea versicolor. According to our findings, oxidative stress seems to have no role in the pathogenesis of tinea versicolor.

Abstract
PURPOSE Recently, increased reactive oxygen species (ROS), reduced antioxidant capacity, and oxidative stress have been suggested in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. The aim of this study to evaluate the thiol/disulfide homeostasis in patients with psoriasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ninety patients with psoriasis who did not receive any systemic treatment in the last six months were included in the study. Seventy-six age and gender-matched healthy volunteers served as control group. Thiol/disulfide homeostasis was measured in venous blood samples obtained from patient and control groups. RESULTS Native thiol and total thiol levels were significantly higher in patients than in control group. When thiol/disulfide hemostasis parameters and clinical and demographic characteristics were compared, a negative correlation was detected between native thiol and total thiol with age. The levels of total thiols had also negative correlation with PASI and duration of the disease. When we divided the patients into smokers and non-smokers, native thiol and total thiol levels were significantly higher in smokers than in controls, whereas native thiol and total thiol levels were comparable in non-smoker patients and controls. CONCLUSIONS Thiol/disulfide balance shifted towards thiol in psoriasis patients and this may be responsible for increased keratinocyte proliferation in the pathogenesis of psoriasis.
