Risk Factors Associated with Condom Use Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Ukraine

Substance Use and Misuse among Sexual and Gender Minority Communities Living in Former Soviet Union Countries: A Scoping Review

Objectives

We reviewed literature examining substance use among sexual and gender minorities (SGM) living in the former Soviet Union (USSR) nations.

Methods

Searches were conducted across five databases (PubMed, SocINDEX, CINAHL, PscyInfo, LGBTQ + Source) to identify peer-reviewed literature.

Results

Across 19 studies, high hazardous substance use prevalence was documented. Substance use was correlated with (a) sexual health and behaviors and (b) mental wellbeing and the use of other substances.

Conclusion

We discuss minority stress implications and challenges presented by the paucity of evidence in the literature examining substance use among SGM women and SGM living in countries unrepresented in reviewed studies.

Dual motivational model of pre-exposure prophylaxis use intention: model testing among men who have sex men in Ukraine

The Dual Motivational Model of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use intention (DMM) is a new theoretical model recently tested among men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States. The model posits that there are two main motivational pathways to use PrEP: the Protection Motivation Pathway and the Expectancy Motivation Pathway. The Protection Motivation Pathway suggests that the intention to use PrEP is triggered by the desire to protect oneself from HIV, while the Expectancy Motivation Pathway suggests that PrEP use intention is triggered by the expectation to have better sexual experiences on PrEP. Although both motivators have been tested separately, only the DMM of PrEP use intention suggests that both pathways simultaneously influence an individual's intention to use PrEP. We used data from 1078 MSM in Ukraine to test the DMM. Results show that the relationship of the pathways is similar among Ukrainian and American MSM. Potential explanations for minor differences may be related to cultural and contextual differences, and the different trajectories for PrEP roll-out. Successful validation of the DMM for PrEP use intention as a theoretical model suggests that it may be applied to other cultures contemplating PrEP use delivery to target health promotion among high risk MSM.

Correlates of Serosorting and Knowledge of Sexual Partner's HIV Status Among Men Who have Sex with Men in Ukraine

Ukraine has among the highest rates of newly diagnosed HIV infections in the WHO European region. Men who have sex with men (MSM) is the least studied group in the context of the HIV epidemics in Ukraine. The present paper aims to estimate the prevalence and correlates of knowledge of sexual partner's HIV status and potentially discordant anal intercourse (failure to serosort) among MSM. Data of the cross-sectional study among 8100 MSM in Ukraine in 2013 were used for this analysis. Less than half of the participants (42.5%) reported that they knew the HIV serostatus of their most recent male sexual partner, and about 13% of participants reported failure to serosort during their most recent anal sexual intercourse with a male partner. Targeted interventions can be implemented to increase knowledge about sexual partner's HIV status, both among HIV-negative and HIV-positive MSM, to reduce the risk of HIV acquisition and transmission.

HIV, hepatitis and syphilis prevalence and correlates of condom use during anal sex among men who have sex with men in the Republic of Moldova

Limited data on HIV prevalence and related risks among men who have sex with men (MSM) exist in the Republic of Moldova. In Chisinau and Balti, 188 and 209, respectively, men who reported having anal or oral sex in the last six months with another man, aged ≥16 years were recruited into a study in 2010 using respondent-driven sampling methods. MSM reported having multiple male and female partners and inconsistent condom use. In Chisinau, 2% of MSM were HIV seropositive, 3.7% had antibodies to hepatitis C (HCV), 5.7% had antibodies to hepatitis B (HBV) and 12.1% had syphilis. In Balti, less than 1% of MSM were HIV seropositive, 1.2% had antibodies to HCV, 3.2% had antibodies to HBV and only 0.5% had syphilis. MSM who used a condom at last anal sex with a man were less likely to reside in Chisinau, to have casual sex partners and to have had an HIV test in the last year and were more likely to know where to get an HIV test. Although HIV prevalence was low, MSM practice a number of risky sexual behaviours that may heighten the risk of further HIV transmission in this population and to the wider population.
