Abstract
We describe the synthesis, crystallographic characterization of a new Cu-Salphen compound and its use as a host Lewis-acid against guest anions in two versions: a) free molecule, b) copolymerized with methyl methacrylate:n-butyl acrylate (1 : 4-wt.) as protective co-monomers. Higher contents in Cu-Salphen yielded larger and more homogeneous polymer sizes. Polymer size together with glass transitions, heat capacity, thermal degradation, guest-saturation degrees and host-guest species distribution profiles from spectrophotometric titrations explained growths of up to 630-fold in K11 and 180000-fold in K12 for the host's binding site attributable to a solvophobic protection from the macromolecular structure. Spectrofluorimetry revealed blue-shifted×13-16 larger luminescence for Cu-Salphen in the polymers (λem =488-498 nm) than that of the non-polymerized counterpart (λem =510-543 nm) and "turn-on" blue-shifted enhanced fluorescence upon guest association. We propose a cooperative incorporation of the guests occurring from the outer medium toward internally protected binding site pockets in the random coil polymer conformations.

Abstract
Chemical warfare agents (CWAs) are among the most prominent threats to the human population, our peace, and social stability. Therefore, their detection and quantification are of utmost importance to ensure the security and protection of mankind. In recent years, significant developments have been made in supramolecular chemistry, analytical chemistry, and molecular sensors, which have improved our capability to detect CWAs. Fluorescent and colorimetric chemosensors are attractive tools that allow the selective, sensitive, cheap, portable, and real-time analysis of the potential presence of CWAs, where suitable combinations of selective recognition and transduction can be integrated. In this review, we provide a detailed discussion on recently reported molecular sensors with a specific focus on the sensing of each class of CWAs such as nerve agents, blister agents, blood agents, and other toxicants. We will also discuss the current technology used by military forces, and these discussions will include the type of instrumentation and established protocols. Finally, we will conclude this review with our outlook on the limitations and challenges in the area and summarize the potential of promising avenues for this field.

Abstract
Visual detection of analytes has been a significant challenge in the design and development of optical chemosensors. Sensing of analytes in aqueous solution by organic molecules has encountered some issues, such as poor water solubility and quenching of optical properties. In this study, a new category of smart dendritic macromolecules was designed and synthesized by functionalization of the poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer with spiropyran molecules to afford a photoluminescent dendritic structure (SP-PAMAM). Smart optical sensors were prepared by physical incorporation of four different oxazolidine derivatives containing hydroxyl and nitro substituted groups into the SP-PAMAM structure. Investigation of optical properties demonstrated photoinduced electron transfer (PET) between the spiropyran end group of SP-PAMAM and oxazolidine derivatives (in a concentration of about 0.0002 M), which can result in quenching of fluorescence emission of spiropyran photoswitch in the form of merocyanine (MC). Treatment of the oxazolidine-doped SP-PAMAM samples with metal ions resulted in changes in the PET mechanism (switching on or off), as observed in the case of Fe3+, Pb2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Co2+, and Ni2+ by different oxazolidine derivatives through various mechanisms (increase or decrease of fluorescence emission). These smart photoluminescent dendritic macromolecules have potential applications for photodetection of metal ions in aqueous media as optical chemosensors. In addition, the smart macromolecules displayed disconnection of PET between MC and oxazolidine and also showed red fluorescence emission under acidic conditions (pH 1-5). It is due to the protonation of the MC to MCH form and demonstrates a remarkable red shift in fluorescence spectra. The pH-responsivity of smart macromolecules was used for designing a paper-based pH indicator for visual detection of spoilage in the food industry, especially in the case of milk. The prepared papers applied on cap of the milk bottles did not show any fluorescence emission in the case of fresh milk; however, a red fluorescence emission was observed after milk spoilage as a result of adsorption of acidic volatile components generated by bacterial degradation and oxidation process on the paper surface. The reported smart papers can serve as optical portable pH indicators for timely detection of spoilage in food materials, which are usable in food packaging as smart indicator tags.

Abstract
We synthesized a new pH-dependent meso-captor/sensor for the visual monitoring and selective sequestering of Ag(I) ions from wastewater. The SBA-16 microspheres were successfully synthesized via a direct hydrothermal treatment through surfactant-assisted cooperative self-assembly. The meso-captor/sensor was designed via the direct immobilization of the chromogenic Acid Blue 90 (AB90) chelate into cubical large, open mesoporous SBA-16 carriers and investigate of its ability to detect and retain silver ions from aqueous solutions. Results show that the synthesized SBA-16 microspheres were retained after modification and the AB90 functional groups were immobilized hierarchically inside the mesopore channels. This was evidenced by the N2 adsorption, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope (HR-TEM), and elemental analyses. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out and the effects of various parameters on Ag(I) ions removal and detection were determined. The optimum adsorption/detection of Ag(I) ions were recorded at a pH of 6.2 within 30 min with color change from a brilliant blue to a pale blue-gray. The spectral response for [SBA-16@AB90 → Ag(I)] complex showed a maximum reflectance at λmax = 385 nm within 2.5 min response time (tR); the LOD was close to 3.87 µg/L while the LOQ approached 12.83 µg/L, this was attributed to the concentration range at which a linear signal has been observed against Ag(I) analyte concentration (i.e., 5 to 1000 µg/L) at pH 6.2 with standard deviation (SD) of 0.077 (RSD% = 9.5 at n = 8).

Abstract
A novel aminoquinoline functionalized norbornene (1) and its ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) copolymer P1 have been designed and synthesized. The polymer probe P1 can self-assemble nano aggregation in aqueous solution. The fluorescent experiments revealed that both 1 and P1 show a ratiometric fluorescence response toward Zn2+ over other mental ions in Tris-HCl buffer solution, with the polymer probe P1 shows a better photostability and higher binding affinity than that of the small molecular probe 1. Furthermore, the in situ formed P1-Zn2+ ensemble was successfully used as the secondary sensor for ATP. P1 is also successfully used for monitoring intracellular Zn2+ and ATP in living cells.

Abstract
A dual-function organic-inorganic mesoporous structure is reported for naked-eye detection and removal of uranyl ions from an aqueous environment. The mesoporous sensor/adsorbent is fabricated via direct template synthesis of highly ordered silica monolith (HOM) starting from a quaternary microemulsion liquid crystalline phase. The produced HOM is subjected to further modifications through growing an organic probe, omega chrome black blue G (OCBBG), in the cavities and on the outer surface of the silica structure. The spectral response for [HOM-OCBBG → U(VI)] complex shows a maximum reflectance at λmax = 548 nm within 1 min response time (tR); the LOD is close to 9.1 μg/L while the LOQ approaches 30.4 μg/L, and this corresponds to the range of concentration where the signal is linear against U(VI) concentration (i.e., 5-1000 μg/L) at pH 3.4 with standard deviation (SD) of 0.079 (RSD% = 11.7 at n = 10). Experiments and DFT calculations indicate the existence of strong binding energy between the organic probe and uranyl ions forming a complex with blue color that can be detected by naked eyes even at low uranium concentrations. With regard to the radioactive remediation, the new mesoporous sensor/captor is able to reach a maximum capacity of 95 mg/g within a few minutes of the sorption process. The synthesized material can be regenerated using simple leaching and re-used several times without a significant decrease in capacity.

Abstract
Perylene imide (PI) molecules and materials have been extensively studied for optical chemical sensors, particularly those based on fluorescence and colorimetric mode, taking advantage of the unique features of PIs such as structure tunability, good thermal, optical and chemical stability, strong electron affinity, strong visible light absorption and high fluorescence quantum yield. PI-based optical chemosensors have now found broad applications in gas phase detection of chemicals, including explosives, biomarkers of some food and diseases (such as organic amines (alkylamines and aromatic amines)), benzene homologs, organic peroxides, phenols and nitroaromatics, etc. In this review, the recent research on PI-based fluorometric and colorimetric sensors, as well as array technology incorporating multiple sensors, is reviewed along with the discussion of potential applications in environment, health and public safety areas. Specifically, we discuss the molecular design and aggregate architecture of PIs in correlation with the corresponding sensor performances (including sensitivity, selectivity, response time, recovery time, reversibility, etc.). We also provide a perspective summary highlighting the great potential for future development of PIs optical chemosensors, especially in the sensor array format that will largely enhance the detection specificity in complexed environments.

Abstract
A novel colorimetric and fluorometric method based on coumarin as signalling unit was developed for Hg2+ recognition and quantification. Initially, the alkyne functionality was incorporated into a coumarin system and the resulting molecule showed higher specificity and sensitivity for Hg2+ over other cations in both absorption and emission sensing assays. The Hg2+ recognition was detected as visible colour change from colourless to yellow and as fluorescence quenching. The colour change was assigned to the increased intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) in the signalling unit upon Hg2+ binding whereas a decline in the fluorescence intensity was ascribed to the heavy atom effect from Hg2+. In order to generate a material with high sensing performance level, alkyne-functionalized molecule was hosted into a polymeric material. The resulting functionalized polymer showed higher sensitivity and selectivity for Hg2+ over its corresponding coumarin molecule. The investigation of the possible binding modes for Hg2+ suggested both alkyne and triazole functionalities as potential binding sites for Hg2+. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of the proposed method were evaluated and values less than a recommended maximum level of Hg2+contaminant in drinking water (2.00 μg/L) were obtained (LOD = 0.44 μg/L and LOQ = 1.33μg/L). The real-life application of the method was investigated using natural water samples containing Hg2+ levels equivalent to the maximum tolerable concentration of Hg2+ in drinking water. The outcomes suggested that the method could be used in the sensing and determination of Hg2+ level of contaminant in the environment.

Abstract
Chemosensing plays a very important role in the detection of essential/pollutant ions in aqueous media. In this manuscript, two tripodal ligands, i.e., 1-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)-1-phenylurea (ligand 1) and 1-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)-1-phenylthiourea (ligand 2) have been synthesised, which differ in the linker molecule, i.e., urea and thiourea in ligand 1 and ligand 2, respectively. The ligands were characterised by NMR, IR and mass spectroscopic techniques. Ligands 1 and 2 (2 mM) were further employed for the generation of their organic nanoparticles (ONPs) (0.01 mM) of size 20–25 nm and 30–35 nm, respectively, by the reprecipitation method. The chemosensing properties of 1-ONP and 2-ONP solutions were investigated. 1-ONP showed simultaneous recognition behaviour towards Cs(i) and Al(iii) with the limits of detection of ∼220 and ∼377 nM, respectively, in an aqueous medium, while 2-ONP did not show any recognition behaviour towards any ion. Two ligands 1 and 2 are synthesized and their organic nanoparticles (1-ONP and 2-ONP) are generated. 1-ONP has shown the chemosensing of Cs(i) (∼220 nm) and Al(iii) (∼377 nm) in aqueous medium while 2-ONP has not shown any chemosensing behaviour.![]()

Conventional nonconductive vinylic films with dispersed aniline change their color and become conductive in the presence of specific oxidant gases, namely, chlorine and hydrogen peroxide. The color change arises from the polymerization of the aniline to yield the conjugated polymer polyaniline, which at the same time renders the flexible vinylic films conductive. We present a simple and straightforward method using both colorimetric and electrical responses to detect and quantify the presence of oxidants (Cl2 and H2O2) in the air. Using RGB analysis (red, green and blue parameters defining the colors in digital pictures on a computer display) based on different pictures taken with a smartphone of discs extracted from the films and by measuring the UV-vis spectral variation in the presence of different concentrations of Cl2 and H2O2, we obtained limits of detection and quantification between 15 and 200 ppbv for H2O2 and between 37 and 583 ppbv for Cl2. Additionally, the electrical response was measured using a fabricated device to visually detect the electrical conductivity activation of the sensor in the presence of oxidant atmospheres, detecting a rapid decrease in resistivity (three orders of magnitude) when the polymerization of aniline began, changing the film from non-conductive to conductive.

Abstract
Microcellular sensory polymers prepared from solid sensory polymeric films were tested in an aqueous Hg(II) detection process to analyze their sensory behavior. First, solid acrylic-based polymeric films of 100 µm thickness were obtained via radical copolymerization process. Secondly, dithizone sensoring motifs were anchored in a simple five-step route, obtaining handleable colorimetric sensory films. To create the microporous structure, films were foamed in a ScCO₂ batch process, carried out at 350 bar and 60 °C, resulting in homogeneous morphologies with cell sizes around 5 µm. The comparative behavior of the solid and foamed sensory films was tested in the detection of mercury in pure water media at 2.2 pH, resulting in a reduction of the response time (RT) around 25% and limits of detection and quantification (LOD and LOQ) four times lower when using foamed films, due to the increase of the specific surface associated to the microcellular structure.

Abstract
A conjugated polymer probe comprised of fluorene, quinolone and benzothiazole units was designed and synthesized by the Suzuki coupling reaction. Through the studies of photophysical and thermal properties, the polymer displays blue-emitting feature and good thermal stability. A ratiometric fluorescence signal of the probe for Zn(II) was observed in ethanol with a new emission peak at 555 nm. The probe possesses a high selectivity and sensitivity for Zn(II) during familiar metal ions in ethanol. The detection limit of the probe for Zn (II) is up to 10-8 mol/L. The electron distributions of the polymer before and after bonding with Zn (II) were investigated by the Gaussian 09 software, which agreed with the experimental results. Noticeably, based on the color property of the probe with Zn(II), a series of color test paper were developed for visual detecting Zn(II) ions. This work helps to provide a platform or pattern for the development of polymer fluorescence probe in the chemosensor field.

Abstract
A new class of thermochromic polynorbornene with pendent spiropyran moieties has been synthesized. Functionalization of norbornene monomers with spirobenzopyran moieties has been achieved using Steglich esterification. These new monomeric materials were polymerized via Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerization (ROMP). In spite of their poor solubility, polynorbornenes with spirobenzopyran exhibited thermochromic behavior due to the conversion of their closed spiropyran moieties to the open merocyanine form. Moreover, these polymers displayed bathochromic shifts in their optical response, which was attributed to the J-aggregation of the attached merocyanine moieties that were associated with their high concentration in the polymeric chain. The surface of the obtained polymers was exposed to atmospheric pressure air Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) plasma system, which resulted in the reduction of the surface porosity and converted some surface area into completely non-porous regions. Moreover, the plasma system created some areas with highly ordered J-aggregates of the merocyanine form in thread-like structures. This modification of the polymers’ morphology may alter their applications and allow for these materials to be potential candidates for new applications, such as non-porous membranes for reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, or molecular separation in the gas phase.

Abstract
Novel anthraimidazoledione-based compounds (1-3) are synthesized as selective colorimetric and fluorescent sensors for fluoride ion. The binding properties of the probes (1-3) are studied with different anions in acetonitrile solvent. Spectral red shifts in the absorption spectra and 'turn-off' emission are observed when fluoride is added to 1-3. The striking green to orange color change in the ambient light is thought to be due to the deprotonation of the N-H proton of the imidazole moiety of the probes by the basic F- ion. Interestingly, in all three cases the nonfluorescent probe-F- solutions, on treatment with copper perchlorate, show distinct color change from orange to golden yellow with resumption of fluorescence intensity. Furthermore, the reversibility of sensors (1-3) for the detection of F- ion is tested for four cycles indicating that "ON-OFF-ON" mechanism is operative. Test strip based on sensor 2 acts as a reusable cost-effective F- sensor.

Abstract
N-(2,4-dinitrobenzylidene)-4-methoxyaniline (1), 4-(N,N-dimethylamine)-N-(2,4-dinitrobenzylidene)aniline (2), 2,4-dinitro-4'-methoxystilbene (3), and 2,4-dinitro-4'-(dimethylamino)stilbene (4) were synthesized and studied in dimethyl sulfoxide in a novel strategy as anionic chromogenic chemosensors. The color of the solutions of these compounds changed only in the presence of cyanide. The kinetic studies were performed with compounds 1-3 in an excess of cyanide. Higher second-order rate constant values were obtained for the compounds containing a methoxy group in relation to the compounds with a dimethylamino substituent, since the methoxy group donates electronic density to the 2,4-dinitrophenyl electron-accepting group less easily compared with the dimethylamino group. Stilbenes generally have greater structural rigidity than imines, facilitating the action of the substituents through the mesomeric effect. The data obtained indicate that the anion acts as a nucleophile, being responsible for CN bond breaking. The CC bridge is not broken in the stilbene dyes, but cyanide performs a nucleophilic attack on the 2,4-dinitrophenyl group.

Abstract
A comprehensive review is presented on the development and state of the art of colorimetric and fluorometric sensor arrays. Optical arrays based on chemoresponsive colorants (dyes and nanoporous pigments) probe the chemical reactivity of analytes, rather than their physical properties. This provides a high dimensionality to chemical sensing that permits high sensitivity (often down to ppb levels), impressive discrimination among very similar analytes and exquisite fingerprinting of extremely similar mixtures over a wide range of analyte types, both in the gas and liquid phases.

Abstract
A fluorogenic sensory film, or dense membrane, capable of detecting Cr(VI), Fe(III), and Hg(II) in water was prepared. The film was prepared by a bulk radical polymerization of different comonomers, one of which contained a piperazinedione motif as sensory fluorophore. The film exhibited gel-like behavior and was highly tractable, even after being swollen in water. The sensing conditions were chosen to overcome interference from iron and mercury cations, giving rise to a material with a detection limit of 1 ppb for Cr(VI).

Abstract
The preparation of a fluorogenic sensory material for the detection of biomolecules is described. Strategic functionalisation and copolymerisation of a water insoluble organic sensory molecule with hydrophilic comonomers yielded a crosslinked, water-swellable, easy-to-manipulate solid system for water "dip-in" fluorogenic coenzyme A, cysteine, and glutathione detection by means of host-guest interactions. The sensory material was a membrane with gel-like behaviour, which exhibits a change in fluorescence behaviour upon swelling with a water solution of the target molecules. The membrane follows a "turn-on" pattern, which permits the titration of the abovementioned biomolecules. In this way, the water insoluble sensing motif can be exploited in aqueous media. The sensory motif within the membrane is a chemically anchored piperazinedione-derivative with a weakly bound Hg(II). The response is caused by the displacement of the cation from the membrane due to a stronger complexation with the biomolecules, thus releasing the fluorescent sensory moieties within the membrane.
