Consequences of vestibular hypofunction in children with ADHD/DCD

BACKGROUND

Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) demonstrate a heterogeneous sensorimotor, emotional, and cognitive profile. Comorbid sensorimotor imbalance, anxiety, and spatial disorientation are particularly prevalent among their non-core symptoms. Studies in other populations presented these three comorbid dysfunctions in the context of vestibular hypofunction.

OBJECTIVE

To test whether there is a subgroup of children with ADHD who have vestibular hypofunction presenting with concomitant imbalance, anxiety, and spatial disorientation.

METHODS

Children with ADHD-only (n = 28), ADHD + Developmental Coordination Disorder (ADHD + DCD; n = 38), and Typical Development (TD; n = 19) were evaluated for vestibular function by the Dynamic Visual Acuity test (DVA-t), balance by the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of motor proficiency (BOT-2), panic anxiety by the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders questionnaire-Child version (SCARED-C), and spatial navigation by the Triangular Completion test (TC-t).

RESULTS

Children with ADHD vs. TD presented with a high rate of vestibular hypofunction (65 vs. 0 %), imbalance (42 vs. 0 %), panic anxiety (27 vs. 11 %), and spatial disorientation (30 vs. 5 %). Children with ADHD + DCD contributed more frequent and severe vestibular hypofunction and imbalance than children with ADHD-only (74 vs. 54 %; 58 vs. 21 %, respectively). A concomitant presence of imbalance, anxiety, and spatial disorientation was observed in 33 % of children with ADHD, all sharing vestibular hypofunction.

CONCLUSIONS

Vestibular hypofunction may be the common pathophysiology of imbalance, anxiety, and spatial disorientation in children. These comorbidities are preferentially present in children with ADHD + DCD rather than ADHD-only, thus likely related to DCD rather than to ADHD disorder. Children with this profile may benefit from a vestibular rehabilitation intervention.

Assessing long-term, vestibulotoxic side effects after gentamicin therapy in neonatal sepsis or infection using video head impulse test

Study background

Newborn infection and sepsis remain serious problems. Guideline-compliant therapy includes, among other therapeutics, calculated intravenous antibiosis with gentamicin. One of the known side effects of gentamicin is severe vestibulotoxicity, which can be detected using the video head impulse test (VHIT), which is a sensitive examination method for the detection of vestibular hypofunction in children and adults. Previous studies on the vestibulotoxicity of gentamicin in newborns were carried out using caloric testing, rotary testing, and electronystagmography. Nevertheless, there are currently no data available on VHIT examinations in children who have been treated with neonatal gentamicin therapy.

Methods

A single-center, prospective cross-sectional study, was conducted at a tertial referral center. VHIT was performed on 23 children aged 3-7 years who had received intravenous gentamicin therapy for at least five days as part of the treatment of newborn sepsis between 2012 and 2016. Main outcome was median gain and occurrence of refixational saccades as measured with VHIT. In addition, the children's parents received questionnaires to detect possible risk factors and vestibular and cochlear abnormalities.

Results

Out of 23 children with a mean age of four years and seven months (ranging from 3 to 7 years), 11 (47.8%) indicated abnormal results in VHIT. The VHIT results were unilaterally abnormal in six children (26.1%) and bilaterally abnormal in five others (21.7%). Additionally, five of the children with an abnormal HIT had abnormalities, as found in the questionnaire results.

Conclusion

and Relevance: Almost half of the children observed after having undergone gentamicin therapy as newborns showed abnormalities in VHIT, although they did not show any clinical signs of disbalance or vestibular hypofunction. VHIT can serve as a sensitive investigation method for the early screening of post-therapeutic vestibulotoxic side effects after gentamicin therapy in children. Additionally, VHIT can enable early intervention in these children.

Vestibular assessment in children with sensorineural hearing loss: diagnostic accuracy and proposal for a diagnostic algorithm

Introduction

Vestibular assessment in children with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is critical for early vestibular rehabilitation therapy to promote (motor) development or guide decision making towards cochlear implantation (timing of surgery and laterality). It can be challenging from a clinical viewpoint to decide which vestibular tests should be performed for a pediatric patient. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of several clinically available vestibular tests in children with SNHL, and to provide recommendations for the implementation of vestibular testing of children in clinical practice, to screen for vestibular hypofunction (VH).

Methods

A two-center retrospective chart review was conducted. Eighty-six patients between the age of 0 and 18 years were included in this study with SNHL. Vestibular tests included video headimpulse test (VHIT), caloric test (performed at the age of four or higher), rotatory chair and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP). A combination of the clinical assessment and (combinations of) vestibular test outcomes determined the diagnosis. The diagnostic quality of tests and combination of tests was assessed by diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity and specificity.

Results

VH was diagnosed in 44% of the patients. The VHIT and caloric test showed the highest diagnostic accuracy compared to the rotatory chair and cVEMP. All combinations of VHIT, caloric test and cVEMP showed improvement of the diagnostic accuracy compared to the respective tests when performed singularly. All combinations of tests showed a relatively similar diagnostic accuracy, with the VHIT combined with the caloric test scoring the highest. Adding a third test did not substantially improve the diagnostic accuracy.

Discussion

Vestibular testing is feasible and VH is highly prevalent in children with SNHL. A proposed diagnostic algorithm recommends starting with VHIT, followed by cVEMP for children under the age of four, and caloric testing for older children if VH is not confirmed with the first test. Performing a third test is redundant as the diagnostic accuracy does not improve substantially. However, challenges remain, including the lack of a gold standard and the subjective nature of the diagnosis, highlighting the need for standardized testing and increased understanding of VH in this population.

NCS Assessments of the Motor, Sensory, and Physical Health Domains

As part of the National Children's Study (NCS) comprehensive and longitudinal assessment of the health status of the whole child, scientific teams were convened to recommend assessment measures for the NCS. This manuscript documents the work of three scientific teams who focused on the motor, sensory, or the physical health aspects of this assessment. Each domain team offered a value proposition for the importance of their domain to the health outcomes of the developing infant and child. Constructs within each domain were identified and measures of these constructs proposed. Where available extant assessments were identified. Those constructs that were in need of revised or new assessment instruments were identified and described. Recommendations also were made for the age when the assessments should take place.

Neuropsychological profiles of children with vestibular loss

BACKGROUND

The impact of vestibular loss (VL) on cognition has been previously studied in experimental animal, human and adult patient studies showing links between VL, and cognitive impairments in space orientation, working memory, mental rotation and selective attention. However, few studies have been conducted on children with VL.

OBJECTIVE

We investigated for the first time, the impact of a VL on children's cognition.

METHODS

13 children with VL (10 years, 5 months) and 60 average-age matched controls performed a neuropsychological assessment consisting of visuospatial working memory, selective visual attention, mental rotation and space orientation tasks.

RESULTS

Children with VL recalled smaller sequences for both forward and backward memory subtasks (mean±SD = 6.3±1.9 and 5.3±2.6) than controls (8.2±2.3 and 7.3±2.0), have less accurate mental rotation scores (25.4±6 versus 30.8±5.1) and greater additional distance travelled in the maze task (96.4±66.6 versus 60.4±66.3); all corrected p-values <0.05. Selective visual attention measures do not show significant differences.

CONCLUSIONS

Children with VL show similar cognitive difficulties that adults with VL, in tasks involving dynamic cognitive processes (higher attentional load) that in tasks requiring static cognitive processes such as visual attention task.

The Visuo-Spatial Abilities Diagnosis (VSAD) test: Evaluating the potential cognitive difficulties of children with vestibular impairment through a new tablet-based computerized test battery

Recent data collected on adult patients with vestibular loss (VL) tend to demonstrate possible cognitive impairments in visuospatial working memory, mental rotation, selective attention, and space orientation. However, the neuropsychological profile of children with VL remains largely under-investigated in the scientific literature. Although previous research has shown that children with VL may experience some degree of delayed motor development, it is not yet clear if VL could also lead to specific delayed cognitive development. In this study, we will present the development and validation of a new tablet-based computerized test battery (VSAD) that evaluates visuospatial working memory, mental rotation, selective attention, and space orientation abilities. Thirteen children with VL and 54 average-age matched healthy children performed the VSAD and classical paper-and-pencil neuropsychological tasks twice within a 1-month interval. Our results demonstrated a good concurrent validity with strong correlations between the visuospatial working memory, mental rotation, and space orientation tests of the VSAD and classical tasks. Test-retest reliability was also supported through good intra-class coefficients. However, the test of selective attention showed no concurrent validity with the matched classical task. The discriminant validity of the VSAD was partially supported for visuospatial working memory and mental rotation performance accuracy. The VSAD shows good concurrent validity and reliability for measuring visuospatial working memory, mental rotation, and space orientation in children with VL. Future studies are needed to extend discriminant validity with other populations.

The effects of age at cochlear implantation on balance in children: A pilot study

AIM

The evaluation of the effects of age at cochlear implantation on balance in children.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Cross-sectional study.

STUDY SAMPLE

Twenty children who received their cochlear implants (CI) before the chronologic age of 48 months (Early CI Group), and 20 children who received their CI at 48 months chronologic age or later (Late CI Group).

INTERVENTION

All children underwent Tandem Romberg (TR) test, Single-Leg stance (SLS) test, Pediatric Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction for Balance (P-CTSIB), Pediatric Balance scale (PBS) and Timed Up and Go (TUG) test.

DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS

The scores of TR, SLS and P-CTSIB and TUG tests and PBS were recorded. Mann Whitney U test and Independent-samples t-test were used to compare data between groups.

RESULTS

TR (eyes opened-EO), SLS (EO), PBS, and TUG scores and incidence in dizziness symptoms did not show significant differences between the groups (p > 0.05). Duration of TR and SLS tests (eyes closed-EC), P-CTSIB-positions 5, and 6 were significantly longer in the Early CI Group than the Late implanted group(p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Although the age of cochlear implantation did not affect functional balance for children, it has been found to cause impaired balance performance in difficult static conditions and increased frequency of dizziness.

High-frequency semicircular canal deficit affects postural control in hearing-impaired children

OBJECTIVES

The present study aimed to analyse the impact of vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain deficit on postural control (PC) in children with sensorineural hearing loss.

METHODS

A retrospective study included 55 children with sensorineural hearing loss between 4 and 17 years of age. The Video Head Impulse Test (vHIT®) was used to assess semicircular canal function. PC was assessed on the Balance Quest® posturographic platform testing sensory organisation.

RESULTS

Spatial and temporal postural parameters (area and mean speed of centre of pressure oscillation, spectral power index) in the OKN-U condition (optokinetic with unstable platform) were significantly better in children with than without VOR deficit.

CONCLUSION

Posturographic exploration in the OKN-U condition can screen for semicircular canal deficit in hearing-impaired children. VOR deficit also seems to predict PC deficit.

Short Communication: The Belly-Tendon Derivation Yields Superior Ocular Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential Amplitudes in a Normal Pediatric Sample

Purpose The purpose of the investigation was to determine whether the "belly-tendon" electrode derivation produced ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMPs) in children that were superior to those recorded with the infraorbital-chin electrode derivation. Method This was a prospective observational study using a sample of convenience at a tertiary care medical center. Subjects were 13 children between the ages of 5 and 12 years. We compared the latency of the N1 wave and the N1-P1 peak-to-peak amplitude for the belly-tendon electrode derivation to the infraorbital-chin electrode derivation. Results The belly-tendon electrode derivation was associated with superior N1-P1 amplitudes compared to the infraorbital-chin electrode derivation. However, the large amplitude was also associated with greater variability compared to the infraorbital-chin derivation. There were no significant electrode derivation-based differences in N1 latency. Additionally, there was no predictable relationship between age and oVEMP amplitude. Conclusion As shown previously in adults, the belly-tendon electrode derivation produces significantly larger oVEMP amplitudes compared to the infraorbital-chin electrode derivation.

How sacculo-collic function assessed by cervical vestibular evoked myogenic Potentials correlates with the quality of postural control in hearing impaired children?

OBJECTIVE

Functional integrity of vestibular end organs is essential for gaze stabilization, dynamic visual acuity, postural control and spatial orientation. Some authors hypothesized on the importance of saccules for postural control and motor development in children, including achievements such as standing up and walking. The purpose of this article was to observe how saccular dysfunction assessed by cervical Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (cVEMPs) correlates with the quality of postural control in non-syndromic deaf children.

METHOD

Seventy-six non-syndromic hearing-impaired children were retrospectively included. Sacculo-collic pathway was assessed with cVEMPs elicited in bone conduction. The response was quoted "normal" if a reproducible wave P13-N23 of at least 50μV in amplitude was present, if not, it was quoted "absent". The sample was divided in 3 groups depending on the presence of the sacculo-collic responses: normal bilateral group (Group 1), normal unilateral (Group 2) and absent bilaterally group (Group 3). Motor assessment was achieved with Movement Assessment Battery for Children, second edition (MABC-2). Postural control (PC) was assessed using the dynamic Balance Quest platform. The scores obtained with MABC-2, and the postural parameters recorded on the Balance Quest platform (sway of Centre of Pressure and spectral power index) were analyzed and compared throughout the groups.

RESULTS

Group 1 (normal bilateral) showed the best scores regarding motor abilities and postural stability within available normative data. Group 3 (absent bilateral) had the lowest motor and postural control skills. A good correlation between the scores obtained by MABC-2 motor test and dynamic posturography (Balance Quest) was observed.

CONCLUSIONS

The presence of at least one sacculo-collic response would predict satisfactory static and dynamic motor and postural control skills in non-syndromic hearing-impaired children. MABC-2 and Dynamic Posturography Balance Quest appears reliable and comparable tools for PC assessment in hearing impaired children. In the light of these results, it appears that in young children candidates for uni- or bilateral CI whose walking is not yet acquired, should receive a vestibular assessment before surgery to avoid the risk of bilateral sacculo-collic function impairment.

Determining the prevalence of vestibular screening failures in pediatric cancer patients whose therapies include radiation to the head/neck and platin-based therapies: A pilot study

BACKGROUND

Sensorineural hearing loss due to ototoxic cancer therapy is well established; effects on the vestibular system are unknown. We examined the feasibility of implementing vestibular screens for pediatric cancer survivors exposed to ototoxic agents. The prevalence of screening failures is reported.

METHODS

Cancer survivors who were 6-17 years, at least 1-month posttreatment, and received ototoxic therapy (radiation to the head/neck, cisplatin, carboplatin) were eligible. Screening measures included (1) Pediatric Vestibular Symptom Questionnaire, (2) Modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction on Balance, and (3) Dynamic Visual Acuity.

RESULTS

Vestibular screening failures were observed in 30 participants (60%). Patients with a brain tumor diagnosis were at increased risk for failures compared to nonbrain tumor patients (74.2% vs. 36.8%, P = 0.009). Patients who underwent brain surgery were at increased risk for failures compared to patients without brain surgery (71% vs. 42%, P = 0.043). Patients with a longer duration between end of treatment and vestibular screening had a reduced risk of failures, with an almost 20% decrease for each year between the time points (odds ratio = 0.812; 95% confidence interval: 0.683-0.964, P = 0.018). Receiving carboplatin correlated with a decreased risk of failure (P = 0.016), due to a negative correlation with other clinical risk factors (diagnosis of a brain tumor, major brain surgery) that are associated with vestibular screening failure.

CONCLUSION

Vestibular screening failures are highly prevalent in childhood cancer survivors who received ototoxic therapy. Broad screening of this population and further characterization of these patients are warranted.

Feasibility of the clinical dynamic visual acuity test in typically developing preschoolers

OBJECTIVES

To determine the feasibility of the dynamic visual acuity test (DVA) in children who are preschoolers.

METHODS

Thirty-three preschoolers [3 years old (n = 11), 4 years old (n = 6), 5 years old (n = 8), and 6 years old (n = 8)], performed a static visual acuity test (SVA), a passive horizontal DVA (hDVA) at 1 and 2 Hz, and a DVA on treadmill at three age-specific walking speeds (slow/medium/high). The DVA scores, the difference between SVA and hDVA, were used to determine false positive results.

RESULTS

The SVA was performed by 31/33 children, the hDVA and DVA on treadmill at slow and medium speed by 27/33 and the DVA on treadmill at high speed by 25/33. Except for one 5 years old, all drop-outs were 3 years old. The hDVA at 2 Hz was administered in only six children because of difficulties with focusing on reading the symbols at this frequency. False positive results for the hDVA at 1 Hz were found in 3/27 children, all 3 years old, and 2/6 for the hDVA at 2 Hz.

CONCLUSIONS

The DVA on treadmill seems useful for preschoolers from age 5, but this should be further investigated in children with underlying pathologies.

Catching-up: Children with developmental coordination disorder compared to healthy children before and after sensorimotor therapy

The aims of the present study were to (a) compare healthy children in terms of sensorimotor maturity to untreated children diagnosed with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) and (b) compare healthy children to diagnosed children following completed treatment with sensorimotor therapy. Participants were 298 children, 196 boys and 102 girls, distributed into a Norm group of healthy children (n = 99) and a group of children diagnosed with DCD (n = 199) with a total mean age of 8.77 years (SD = 2.88). Participants in both groups were assessed on instruments aimed to detect sensorimotor deviations. The children in the DCD group completed, during on average 36 months, sensorimotor therapy which comprised stereotypical fetal- and infant movements, vestibular stimulation, tactile stimulation, auditory stimulation, complementary play exercises, gross motor milestones, and sports-related gross motor skills. At the final visit a full assessment was once more performed. Results showed that the Norm group performed better on all sensorimotor tests as compared to the untreated children from the DCD group, with the exception of an audiometric test where both groups performed at the same level. Girls performed better on tests assessing proprioceptive and balance abilities. Results also showed, after controls for natural maturing effects, that the children from the DCD group after sensorimotor therapy did catch up with the healthy children. The concept of "catching-up" is used within developmental medicine but has not earlier been documented with regard to children and youth in connection with DCD.

Zebrafish models of human eye and inner ear diseases

Eye and inner ear diseases are the most common sensory impairments that greatly impact quality of life. Zebrafish have been intensively employed to understand the fundamental mechanisms underlying eye and inner ear development. The zebrafish visual and vestibulo-acoustic systems are very similar to these in humans, and although not yet mature, they are functional by 5days post-fertilization (dpf). In this chapter, we show how the zebrafish has significantly contributed to the field of biomedical research and how researchers, by establishing disease models and meticulously characterizing their phenotypes, have taken the first steps toward therapies. We review here models for (1) eye diseases, (2) ear diseases, and (3) syndromes affecting eye and/or ear. The use of new genome editing technologies and high-throughput screening systems should increase considerably the speed at which knowledge from zebrafish disease models is acquired, opening avenues for better diagnostics, treatments, and therapies.

2015 Section on Pediatrics Knowledge Translation Lecture: Pediatric Vestibular-Related Impairments

KEY POINTS

Until recently, the incidence and effect of vestibular system impairments in children has been grossly underidentified and thus not addressed. Because of incidence reports (approximately 10% of the US population younger than 21 years) and evidence of the efficacy of evaluation methods and interventions, researchers and clinicians are focusing on development of optimal interventions to enhance function, thus minimizing the negative effect of vestibular hypofunction on reading, motor development, and postural control. However, research progress has been slow. How can clinicians and researchers collaborate so that (1) vestibular deficits and related impairments can be identified in children, and (2) optimal interventions can be identified and implemented so that children with peripheral and/or central vestibular dysfunction can benefit?

SUMMARY

Our participation in knowledge translation is presented, to include discussion of possible barriers, challenges, and opportunities for facilitating collaboration and joint efforts of clinical and research practice.

Clinical experience with video Head Impulse Test in children

BACKGROUND

A standardized diagnostic protocol for children's vestibular assessment is still missing in daily clinical life. As rotatory chair testing and caloric test are usually not tolerated well by children, the aim of our study was not only to evaluate the importance and practicability of the video head impulse test performed in children with and without balance problems, but also to outline a diagnostic algorithm for children with balance problems.

METHODS

Fifty-five children aged 3-16 years have been included in this prospective monocentric study. Balance was assessed using results from health screening examinations of the participants and results from a specific dizziness questionnaire for children. The children were then divided in two groups: group I without any sign of vestibular development disorder and group II with possible signs for a pathological equilibrium development. Horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (HVOR) was assessed using a video-oculography system device (EyeSeeCam(©)). Gain at 40, 60, and 80ms and gain variance has been measured. Furthermore, it was evaluated how calibration of the system was tolerated by the participants, how the test itself was accomplishable in children, and which difficulties arose during testing.

RESULTS

Reproducible test results were accomplished in 42 children (75%). Children with no balance problems in history showed a median gain of 1.02 (±0.28). A significant gain reduction between 40 and 80ms was found (P<0.05). Catch-up saccades were found in none of the children. Children with balance problems had a significantly reduced gain. (0.47±0.3; P<0.05) In this group, catch-up saccades could be detected in 4 out of 6 patients. For both groups, performing the test approximately took 20min, which is significantly longer than in adults (P<0.05). Calibration of the system with laser dots was easily doable in children aged 6 and older, whereas children between 3 and 5 years had better calibration results using colorful little icons.

CONCLUSIONS

Video head impulse test is a sensitive and efficient vestibular test in children, which is tolerated well by children aged 3-16 years. Therefore, video head impulse test can be easily used as a screening tool to detect vestibular dysfunction in the pediatric population.

Vertigo with a Vestibular Dysfunction in Children During Respiratory Tract Infections

Sudden balance disorders with violent vegetative symptoms (nausea and vomiting) pose a diagnostic and therapeutic problem. In children vertigo/dizziness with symptoms of vestibular dysfunction is rare, but as vascular etiology is unlikely in children such symptoms arouse concern. This article presents two cases of this type of vertigo. The patients were two boys (6 and 9 years old). They came down with similar symptoms: sudden dizziness, disabled walking, nausea and vomiting, spontaneous nystagmus, and a positive Romberg test. The onset of the balance disorder was preceded by respiratory infection: common cold with symptoms of inflammation of the mucous membrane in the nose and throat. Laboratory tests revealed increased levels of C-reactive protein only in the older boy. Neuroinfection and a displacement process were ruled out. Videonystagmography revealed vestibular dysfunction and vestibular neuronitis on the left side.

A preliminary randomized controlled study on the effectiveness of vestibular-specific neuromuscular training in children with hearing impairment

Objective:

To determine the effectiveness of vestibular-specific neuromuscular training on motor skills, balance and health-related quality of life in children with hearing impairment.

Design:

Controlled, randomized, preliminary study.

Setting:

Rehabilitation school for children with hearing impairment.

Subjects and intervention:

Twenty-three children with mean age of 7.5–8.1 years with hearing impairment were randomized to either the intervention or the control group. Children in the experimental group ( n = 11) participated in vestibular-specific neuromuscular training for six weeks and the children in the control group continued their regular activities followed at school.

Outcome measures:

Measurement of motor skills (Test of Gross Motor Development-2), postural control (Pediatric Reach Test, One Leg Standing Balance Test and postural sway meter) and health-related quality of life (PedsQL Generic Core Scale).

Results:

Following intervention, the scores of motor skills (Test of Gross Motor Development P = 0.02; throw for distance P = 0.042; kick for distance P = 0.08; jump for distance P = 0.001; 15-yard dash P = 0.001), postural control measures (Pediatric Reach Test P = 0.001; One Leg Standing Test P = 0.03; and anteroposterior sway (eyes open P = 0.007, eyes closed P = 0.03); mediolateral sway (eyes open P = 0.014, eyes closed P = 0.017) and health-related quality of life ( P = 0.01) improved significantly in the experimental group and not in the control group.

Conclusion:

The findings of the study suggest that vestibular-specific neuromuscular training programme may improve the motor skills, balance and health-related quality of life in children with hearing impairment.

Reliability of pediatric reach test in children with hearing impairment

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study was to evaluate the reliability of pediatric reach test in children with hearing impairment.

METHODS

A total of 65 hearing impaired children completed the standing section of PRT. Two raters evaluated all the included children in standing section of PRT on two separate occasions.

RESULTS

ICC was used to generate reliability coefficients for intra-rater and inter-rater PRT measurements using a two-way mixed effects model, single measure reliability with absolute agreement. The ICC values reported good to excellent reliability as the lower values of the 95% CI was above 0.4. The SEMs reported in this study was below 0.5cm.

CONCLUSION

This study indicates that PRT can reliably measure the limits of stability in children with hearing impairment. Using the PRT, balance deficits can be identified, and a reliable baseline measures may be established for hearing impaired children before initiating interventions.

An overview of motor skill performance and balance in hearing impaired children

Childhood hearing impairment is a common chronic condition that may have a major impact on acquisition of speech, social and physical development. Numerous literature states that injury to the vestibular organs may result in accompanying balance and motor development disorders. But still postural control and motor assessments are not a routine procedure in hearing impaired children. Hence, we aim to provide an overview on motor skill performance and balance in hearing impaired children.
