Regulation of Mitochondrial Respiration by Hydrogen Sulfide

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), the third gasotransmitter, has positive roles in animals and plants. Mitochondria are the source and the target of H2S and the regulatory hub in metabolism, stress, and disease. Mitochondrial bioenergetics is a vital process that produces ATP and provides energy to support the physiological and biochemical processes. H2S regulates mitochondrial bioenergetic functions and mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. The article summarizes the recent knowledge of the chemical and biological characteristics, the mitochondrial biosynthesis of H2S, and the regulatory effects of H2S on the tricarboxylic acid cycle and the mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes. The roles of H2S on the tricarboxylic acid cycle and mitochondrial respiratory complexes in mammals have been widely studied. The biological function of H2S is now a hot topic in plants. Mitochondria are also vital organelles regulating plant processes. The regulation of H2S in plant mitochondrial functions is gaining more and more attention. This paper mainly summarizes the current knowledge on the regulatory effects of H2S on the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) and the mitochondrial respiratory chain. A study of the roles of H2S in mitochondrial respiration in plants to elucidate the botanical function of H2S in plants would be highly desirable.

Sonoluminescence Spectra in the First Tens of Seconds of Sonolysis of [BEPip][NTf2], at 20 kHz under Ar

Following recent works on the sonochemical degradation of butyl ethyl piperidinium bis-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([BEPip][NTf₂]), monitoring of sonoluminescence (SL) spectra in the first tens of seconds of sonolysis was needed to better characterize the formed plasma and to question the correlation of the SL spectra with the viscosity. A very dry [BEPip][NTf₂] ionic liquid (IL) and a water-saturated liquid are studied in this paper. In both cases, IL degradation is observed as soon as SL emission appears. It is confirmed that the initial evolution of the SL intensity is closely linked to the liquid viscosity that impacts the number of bubbles; however, other parameters can also play a role, such as the presence of water. The water-saturated IL shows more intense SL and faster degradation. In addition to the expected bands, new emission bands are detected and attributed to the S₂ B-X emission, which is favored in the water-saturated ionic liquid.

Exploring the Reaction Mechanism of H2S Decomposition with MS3 (M = Mo, W) Clusters

H₂S is abundantly available in nature, and it is a common byproduct in industries. Molybdenum sulfides have been proved to be active in the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) to produce hydrogen. In this study, density functional theory (DFT) calculations are carried out to explore the reaction mechanisms of H₂S with MS₃ (M = Mo, W) clusters. The reaction mechanism of H₂S with MoS₃ is roughly the same as that of the reaction with WS₃, and the free-energy profile of the reaction with MoS₃ is slightly higher than that of the reaction with WS₃. The overall driving forces (-ΔG) are positive, and the overall reaction barriers (ΔG _b) are rather small, indicating that such H₂ productions are product-favored. MS₃ (M = Mo, W) clusters have clawlike structures, which have electrophilic metal sites to receive the approaching H₂S molecule. After several hydrogen-atom transfer (HAT) processes, the final MS₄·H₂ (IM-4) complexes are formed, which could desorb H₂ at a relatively low temperature. The singlet product MS₄ clusters contain the singlet S₂ moiety, similar to the adsorbed singlet S₂ on the surface of sulfide catalysts. The theoretical results are compared with the experiments of heterogeneous catalytic decomposition of H₂S by MoS₂ catalysts. Our work may provide some insights into the optimal design of the relevant catalysts.
