Injury severity analysis of two-vehicle crashes at unsignalized intersections using mixed logit models

A study on diversion behavior in weaving segments: Individualized traffic conflict prediction and causal mechanism analysis

Lane change behavior disrupts traffic flow and increases the potential for traffic conflicts, especially on expressway weaving segments. Focusing on the diversion process, this study incorporating individual driving patterns into conflict prediction and causation analysis can help develop individualized intervention measures to avoid risky diversion behaviors. First, to minimize measurement errors, this study introduces a lane line reconstruction method. Second, several unsupervised clustering methods, including k-means, agglomerative clustering, gaussian mixture, and spectral clustering, are applied to explore diversion patterns. Moreover, machine learning methods, including Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Attention-based LSTM, eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), are employed for real-time traffic conflict prediction. Finally, mixed logit models are developed using pre-conflict condition data to investigate the causal mechanisms of traffic conflicts. The results indicate that the K-means algorithm with four clusters exhibits the highest Calinski-Harabasz and Silhouette scores and the lowest Davies-Bouldin scores. With superior classification accuracy and generalization ability, the LSTM is used to develop the personalized traffic conflict prediction model. Sensitivity analysis indicates that incorporating the diversion patterns into the LSTM model results in an improvement of 3.64% in Accuracy, 7.15% in Precision, and 1.34% in Recall. Results from the four mixed logit models indicate significant differences in factors contributing to traffic conflicts within each diversion pattern. For instance, increasing the speed difference between the target vehicle and the right preceding vehicle benefits traffic conflict during acceleration diversions but decreases the likelihood of traffic conflicts during deceleration diversions. These results can help traffic engineers propose individualized solutions to reduce unsafe diversion behavior.

Analyzing the factors affecting the crash severity level at urban roundabouts in non-lane-based heterogeneous traffic

Pivotal crash factors are investigated, and crash-severity model for the safety assessment at roundabouts and its vicinity in non-lane based heterogenous traffic is developed. An ordered-probit model was developed using crash-data collected between 2015-2019 for 20 roundabouts in India. The analysis revealed critical influencing parameters for determining the severity-level of crash outcomes at roundabouts, namely, inscribed-circle diameter, height of central island, number of circulatory lanes, presence of splitter island and median, posted-speed limit, type of collision, type of violation behaviour, collision partner, the pattern of collision, presence of road lane-marking, presence of street-light and age of victims. To precisely quantify the impact of each significant factor, marginal effects analysis was also carried out. The results show that the probability of fatal-injuries increased by 14.28% due to angle-collision, 15% for hit-pedestrians, 20.6% due to the pattern of collision and 15.60% due to the collision-partner, Whereas the probability of occurrence of grievous injury was the highest for rear-end with 17%, followed by sideswipe collision with 16% respectively. This study's findings can aid in developing effective remedies to reduce the crash severity for roundabouts road-users and updating the roundabout design standards, considering the safety perceptive.

Investigating injury severity interaction between urban and urban-rural fringe areas: a grouped random parameters seemingly unrelated bivariate probit approach

Urban-rural integration is the critical process of urbanization, while during this process there are various corresponding problems generated, safety is the most important one, especially at urban-rural fringe areas due to mixed traffic flow and complicated land use. This study intended to investigate the injury severity interaction between urban area and urban-rural fringe area, and explore the correlation within injury severity levels and heterogeneity attributed to unobserved factors. To address the correlation and heterogeneity issues, a grouped random parameters seemingly unrelated bivariate (SUB) probit model was proposed, in which the SUB probit model addressed the correlation of residuals, while the random parameters model accommodated the heterogeneity due to unobserved factors. By comparing the pooled with random parameters models, the results showed that random parameters SUB probit model performed better than the pooled one, and the dataset collected from 2013 to 2017 in Chengdu, China was adopted to illustrate the proposed model. It is found that crash location, speed limit and age of person injured are significant for injury severity in urban and urban-rural fringe areas, but crash form plays a significant role in urban area while number of persons involved should be paid more attention due to injury severity in urban-rural fringe area. Some empirical suggestions are presented to improve the safety in urban and urban-rural fringe areas.

Injury severity analysis of single-vehicle and two-vehicle crashes with electric scooters: A random parameters approach with heterogeneity in means and variances

In recent years, the electric scooter has become one of the most popular means of transportation on short trips. Due to the lag in the formulation of transportation policies and regulations, coupled with the increasing number of electric scooter crashes, there has been growing concern about the safety of pedestrians and electric scooter riders. For the first time in the extant literature, this study aims to analyze injury severity of electric scooter crashes by unobserved heterogeneity modeling approaches. A random parameters approach with heterogeneity in means and variances is utilized to examine the factors influencing injury severity, using data collected from the STATS19 road safety database. Electric scooter crashes are classified as single-vehicle crashes and two-vehicle crashes, with injury severity categorized into two groups: fatalities or serious injuries, and slight injuries. The model estimation was conducted by considering several variables including roadway, environment, temporality, vehicle, and rider characteristics, as well as second-party vehicle and driver characteristics and manners of collision specific to two-vehicle crashes. The results of the model estimation reveal that certain factors had relatively stable effects with the varying degree of crash injury severity outcomes in both single-vehicle crashes and two-vehicle crashes. These factors include nighttime incidents, weekdays, male riders, and an increase in rider age, all of which are associated with more severe injury outcomes. Moreover, the random parameters logit model with heterogeneity in means and variances is more flexible in accounting for unobserved heterogeneity and exhibits better goodness of fit. This study improves the understanding of electric scooter safety, and the finding can better inform public policy regarding electric scooter use to improve road safety and reduce injury severity of electric scooter crashes.
