Abstract
PURPOSE To understand and combat the challenges in taking up and implementing technology in rehabilitation settings, the HabITec Lab, a clinical service focused on technology, was piloted for 12-months within a tertiary hospital. This article reports on its preliminary impacts as a clinical service and on clients, including the types of assistive technology (AT) in demand. MATERIALS AND METHODS Referral and administrative data from 25 individuals who attended the HabITec Lab were collated and analysed using descriptive statistics. For those who attended more than once (n = 12), goal attainment was assessed using the Modified Goal Attainment Measure (MGAM). Post-intervention semi-structured interviews were completed with participants to understand their experience at the HabITec Lab. Interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS Most attendees (92%) were undergoing inpatient rehabilitation following a spinal cord injury (SCI). The majority (73%) of goals related to improving entertainment and connection. All participants who completed the MGAM showed improved goal attainment following their HabITec Lab attendance. Qualitative data highlighted appreciation for the service and suggestions for its future. CONCLUSIONS This study revealed a high level of demand for support to use AT amongst individuals with SCI, particularly consumer-grade smart devices that could assist communication. This finding may have been influenced by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and frequent lockdowns during this period. This study indicated that the HabITec Lab was able to address important goals for attendees, but also illuminate a new future and trigger enthusiasm about future goals. Attendance was liberating, but resourcing barriers were frustrating.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore patients with cardiovascular diseases' lived experiences of the support given by a text message intervention focusing on the maintenance of physical activity after supervised cardiac rehabilitation. METHODS In a qualitative study, participants from the feasibility trial FAIR were interviewed individually twice to disclose their lived experiences during and after the trial. Transcribed interviews were analysed based on a phenomenological-hermeneutic method, inspired by Paul Ricoeur's philosophy on narrative and interpretation. RESULTS Interviews of eight patients with cardiovascular disease (3 females, median age 57 years (range 37 to 74 years)) revealed two themes, The FAIR intervention as a bridge builder in the transition to being physically active in everyday life and Meaningful conditions for maintaining physical activity. Action plans guided physical activity, while text messages facilitated actions and left an impression of still being under supervision. A frame of reference with physical activity, family, being monitored, having to report back, and getting feedback, were incentives for being physically active. CONCLUSION From a patient perspective, the text message intervention in the feasibility trial FAIR was valuable to support the maintenance of physical activity in the transition from a supervised exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation programme to everyday life on an individual basis. Participants experienced the intervention to hold their hands in changing behaviour and redefining themselves. Yet, there is an extended need for belonging and personal interactions in future interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare smartphone application (Colonoscopic Preparation) instructions versus paper instructions for bowel preparation for colonoscopy. BACKGROUND Adhering to bowel preparation instructions is important to ensure a high-quality colonoscopy. PATIENTS AND METHODS This randomized controlled trial included individuals undergoing colonoscopy at a tertiary care hospital. Individuals were randomized (1:1) to receive instructions through a smartphone application or traditional paper instructions. The primary outcome was the quality of the bowel preparation as measured by the Boston Bowel Preparation Score. Secondary outcomes included cecal intubation and polyp detection. Patient satisfaction was assessed using a previously developed questionnaire. RESULTS A total of 238 individuals were randomized (n = 119 in each group), with 202 available for the intention-to-treat analysis (N = 97 in the app group and 105 in the paper group). The groups had similar demographics, indications for colonoscopy, and type of bowel preparation. The primary outcome (Boston Bowel Preparation Score) demonstrated no difference between groups (Colonoscopic Preparation app mean: 7.26 vs paper mean: 7.28, P = 0.91). There was no difference in cecal intubation (P = 0.37), at least one polyp detected (P = 0.43), or the mean number of polyps removed (P = 0.11). A higher proportion strongly agreed or agreed that they would use the smartphone app compared with paper instructions (89.4% vs 70.1%, P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Smartphone instructions performed similarly to traditional paper instructions for those willing to use the application. Local patient preferences need to be considered before making changes in the method of delivery of medical instructions.

Abstract
PURPOSE The use of Information and communications technologies (ICT) in the public sector is widespread and on the increase. There is a need to develop knowledge regarding the end users experiences of using ICT to engage with services. This study aims to provide knowledge regarding young persons with disabilities or chronic disease experience using ICT to engage with health- and social care services. MATERIALS AND METHODS Nine young persons between 16 and 25, living with chronic disease or physical disability, participated in this study. The data was collected using semi-structured interviews. The interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using Constructivist Grounded Theory. RESULTS Three categories were identified that reflected the young persons' experiences with using ICT to engage with health and social care services. (1) Navigating in an information overflow, (2) Experiencing disparate dialogues, (3) Utilising the potential of ICT. The young persons experienced that ICT used for engaging with health and social care services did not necessarily fit their need, yet, they saw how ICT had potential to increase engagement with services, especially with an increased focus on dialogue. The findings can be subsumed by the core category Inaccessible Possibilities, illustrating both the potentials and the challenges ICT presented. CONCLUSION The study shows that although young persons are perceived as digitally native, they experienced challenges using ICT to engage with health- and social services. The poor fit of ICT combined with navigation- and accessibility issues, hinder engagement. However, ICT inhabit a potential to increase engagement, especially communication.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONYoung persons' experiences show that ICT can be useful for enhancing engagement with health and social care servicesICT provided by health and social services does not necessarily meet young persons need for dialogueAn increased focus on accessibility and design is necessary to ensure people with disabilities access to ICT used by health- and social care services.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Across most healthcare systems, patients are the primary focus. Patient involvements enhance their adherence to treatment, which in return, influences their health. The objective of this study was to determine the characteristics (ie, attributes) and associated levels (ie, values of the characteristics) that are the most important for patients regarding telerehabilitation (TR) healthcare to support a future discrete choice experiment (DCE) study design. METHODS A mixed-methods systematic review was conducted from January 2005 to the end of July 2020 and the search strategy was applied to five different databases. The initial selection of articles that met the eligibility criteria was independently made by one researcher, two researchers verified the accuracy of the extracted data, and all researchers discussed about relevant variables to include. Reporting of this systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) was used to assess the quality of the study. A qualitative synthesis was used to summarize findings. RESULTS From a total of 928 articles, 11 (qualitative [n = 5], quantitative [n = 3] and mixed-methods [n = 3] design) were included, and 25 attributes were identified and grouped into 13 categories: Accessibility, Distance, Interaction, Technology experience, Treatment mode, Treatment location, Physician contact mode, Physician contact frequency, Cost, Confidence, Ease of use, Feeling safer, and Training session. The attributes levels varied from two to five. The DCE studies identified showed the main stages to undertake these types of studies. CONCLUSION This study could guide the development of interview grid for individual interviews and focus groups to support a DCE study design in the TR field. By understanding the characteristics that enhance patients' preferences, healthcare providers can create or improve TR programs that provide high-quality and accessible care. Future research via a DCE is needed to determine the relative importance of the attributes.

Abstract
Background Before and after major surgery, access to information in a user-friendly way is a prerequisite for patients to feel confident in taking on the responsibility for their surgical preparation and recovery. Several e-health applications have been developed to support patients perioperatively. The aim of this review was to give an overview of e-health applications designed for self-care associated with surgery by providing a scoping overview of perspectives from providers and patients. Methods We searched the following data sources to identify peer-reviewed quantitative and qualitative studies published between 2015 and 2020: CINAHL, Google Scholar, MEDLINE, PsycInfo, Web of Science, and Scopus. After identifying 960 titles, we screened 638 abstracts, of which 72 were screened in full text. Protocol register: 10.17605/OSF.IO/R3QND. Results We included 15 studies which met our inclusion criteria. Data from several surgical contexts revealed that the most common self-care actions in e-health applications were preoperative preparations and self-assessments of postoperative recovery. Motivational factors for self-care were information, combined with supportive reminders and messages, and chat features. Although there was great variance in research designs and technical solutions, a willingness to engage with and adhere to e-health seemed to increase patients’ self-care activities and thereby accelerate return to work and normal activities. In addition, the need for physical visits seemed to decrease. Even though age groups were not primarily studied, the included studies showed that adult patients of any age engaged in surgical self-care supported by e-health. The providers’ perspectives were not found. Conclusions E-health applications supporting perioperative self-care indicated a positive impact on recovery. However, experiences of healthcare professionals delivering e-health associated with surgery are missing. Additionally, studies based on patients’ perspectives regarding willingness, adherence, and motivation for self-care supported by e-health are sparse. A need for studies examining the supporting role of e-health for self-care in the surgical context is therefore needed. Abstract
Introduction Scientific evidence highlights the importance of E-Readiness in the adoption and implementation of E-Oral Health technologies. However, to our knowledge, there is no study investigating the perspective of patients in this regard. Therefore, the objective of this study was to explore patients’ E-Readiness in the field of dentistry. Materials and methods A qualitative study was conducted using interpretive descriptive methodology. Purposeful sampling with maximum variation and snowball techniques were used to recruit the study participants via McGill University dental clinics and affiliated hospitals, as well as private or public dental care organizations. A total of 15 face-to-face, semi-structured and 60 to 90-minute audio recorded interviews were conducted. Data collection and analyses were performed concurrently, and interviews were continued until saturation was reached. Activity theory was used as the conceptual framework, and thematic analysis was used to analyze data. Data analysis was conducted both manually and with the use of “ATLAS-ti” software. Results Four major themes emerged from the study; unlocking barriers, E-Oral Health awareness, inquisitiveness for E-Oral Health technology and enduring oral health benefits. These themes correspond with all three types of readiness (core, engagement and structural). Conclusion The study results suggest that dental patients consider E-Oral Health as a facilitator to access to care, and they are ready to learn and use E-Oral Health technology. There is a need to implement and support E-Oral Health technologies to improve patient care.

Abstract
Background Mobile health (mHealth) apps might have the potential to promote self-management of people with multiple sclerosis (MS) in everyday life. However, the uptake of MS apps remains poor, and little is known about the facilitators and barriers for their efficient utilization, such as technology acceptance. Objective The aim of this study was to examine the acceptance of mHealth apps for disease management in the sense of behavioral intentions to use and explore determinants of utilization among people with MS based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). Methods Participants for this Web-based cross-sectional study were recruited throughout Germany with the support of regional MS associations and self-help groups. To identify determinants of intention to use MS apps, a measure based on the UTAUT was adapted with 4 key determinants (performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions) and extended by Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU) and electronic health literacy. Potential influencing effects of both MS and computer self-efficacy (C-SE) as mediators and fatigue as a moderator were analyzed using Hayes’s PROCESS macro (SPSS version 3.0) for IBM SPSS version 24.0. Results A total of 98 participants (mean age 47.03 years, SD 10.17; 66/98, 67% female) with moderate fatigue levels completed the survey. Although most participants (91/98, 92%) were daily smartphone users, almost two-thirds (62/98, 63%) reported no experience with MS apps. Overall, the acceptance was moderate on average (mean 3.11, SD 1.31, minimum=1 and maximum=5), with lower scores among persons with no experience (P=.04) and higher scores among current users (P<.001). In multiple regression analysis (R2=63% variance explained), performance expectancy (beta=.41) and social influence (beta=.33) were identified as significant predictors of acceptance (all P<.001). C-SE was confirmed as a partial mediator in the relationship between IU and acceptance (indirect effect: B=−.095, 95% CI −0.227 to −0.01). Furthermore, a moderated mediation by C-SE was shown in the relationship between IU and behavioral intentions to use MS apps for low (95% CI −0.42 to −0.01) and moderate levels (95% CI −0.27 to −0.01) of fatigue. Conclusions Overall, this exploratory pilot study indicates for the first time that positive expectations about the helpfulness for self-management purposes and social support might be important factors to be considered for improving the acceptance of MS apps among smartphone users with MS. However, given some inconsistent findings, especially regarding the role of effort expectancy and IU and self-efficacy, the conceptual model needs replication with a larger sample of people with MS, varying more in fatigue levels, and a longitudinal assessment of the actual usage of MS apps predicted by acceptance in the sense of behavioral intentions to use.
