Caeski: an assistive technology for the communication of persons with deafblindness

PURPOSE

Caeski is a keyboard with 12 vibrating keys that connects to an application via smartphone. This assistive technology aims to facilitate the communication of persons with deafblindness in presential contexts or with people who can be anywhere in the world. The purpose is to present this assistive technology and analyse the viability of its use through tests with eleven persons with deafblindness.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study design consisted of ten days of testing with eleven persons with deafblindness and five interpreters who had the function of passing the information about the content of the tests.

RESULTS

The tests showed that most participants were able to communicate through Caeski. In addition, the tests showed the need to add the function of repeating the reception of information via vibration to confirm the understanding. The results demonstrated the need for more training time to improve the learning of accented words and long sentences. Therefore, training time and previous contact with technological devices are factors that influence the result of the tests.

CONCLUSION

The use of Caeski is feasible and as future perspectives, this assistive technology can be used in association with similar assistive technologies such as Perkins Machine and Braille Line, preventing possible tactile overloads. In addition, can be applied in the educational context, from literacy to university. Studies with longer training time should be conducted to confirm the results. Review of Navigation Assistive Tools and Technologies for the Visually Impaired

The visually impaired suffer greatly while moving from one place to another. They face challenges in going outdoors and in protecting themselves from moving and stationary objects, and they also lack confidence due to restricted mobility. Due to the recent rapid rise in the number of visually impaired persons, the development of assistive devices has emerged as a significant research field. This review study introduces several techniques to help the visually impaired with their mobility and presents the state-of-the-art of recent assistive technologies that facilitate their everyday life. It also analyses comprehensive multiple mobility assistive technologies for indoor and outdoor environments and describes the different location and feedback methods for the visually impaired using assistive tools based on recent technologies. The navigation tools used for the visually impaired are discussed in detail in subsequent sections. Finally, a detailed analysis of various methods is also carried out, with future recommendations.

Analysis of Digital Leadership in School Management and Accessibility of Animation-Designed Game-Based Learning for Sustainability of Education for Children with Special Needs

With the rapid integration of technology into educational environments during the pandemic period, the teaching processes in classrooms and private education institutions began to be carried out with technology support. Game-based animation learning designs in technology-supported educational environments provide an interesting and motivation-enhancing learning experience in developing students’ education skills. In today’s educational environments, 2D and 3D animation game designs are the unique technology-supported learning environments in teaching many different skills, behaviors, and concepts to individuals with special needs. Visual designs and animations are one of the technologies necessary to prepare individuals with special needs for an independent life. The accessibility of animation designs for teachers and families has gained significant importance during the COVID-19 pandemic period. Technology education supports the visual, listening, reading, writing, social, and communication skills of individuals with special needs, facilitates their independent life skills, and contributes to their development as a guide. This allows individuals to learn the targeted information more easily, permanently, and quickly. In this context, this study provides information on the use and accessibility of animation technology in special education, offers suggestions for the benefit of visual design and animation, which are among the assistive technologies, and gives insights into how school management is ready for digital education.
