Effects of modern technology on broiler chicken performance and economic indicators – a Hungarian case study

Technical and economic performance favours fully automated climate control broiler housing

1. This study compared two broiler housing models with different technologies (conventional versus fully automated climate control) to verify their performance and carcass characteristics at slaughter, as well as the economics of production.2. A database regarding 20 443 flocks of heavy broilers produced in an integrated operation during the years 2020 and 2021, in eight Brazilian regions was used in the analysis. The dependent variables included feed conversion, average live weight gain, total and partial carcass condemnation and the total mortality. For economic analysis, the production cost of each technology including feed, labour, energy, heating and depreciation was calculated.3. The technology used in the broiler houses had a significant effect on the technical indicators which were positive for fully automated climate control in most geographical regions. One important exception was the effect on total and partial carcass condemnations, with better results seen for conventional housing. The total cost per ton of broiler meat delivered, deducting condemnation losses, was lower in the automated climate controlled housing compared to conventional housing.4. In conclusion, there was a reduction in broiler chicken production costs for birds raised in fully automated climate controlled housing, indicating better economic results for this model in Brazil.

Profitability and Cost Analysis for Contract Broiler Production in Turkey

This study uses the data obtained from 63 broiler farms engaged in contract farming in Akhisar, Turkey. The average feed conversion ratio in the broiler farms is 1.75, the average live weight 2.25 kg, and the mean market age 38.9 days. The feed conversion rate and the income generated are highly correlated (r = -0.76). The production index is 313.4. According to this production index value, 47.6% of the enterprises are below the average production index. It is highest when the marketing age is greater than 38 days, less than and equal to 40. In other words, it is the optimum market age range where carcass yield is at maximum. The average mortality rate is 4.68%. In 52.4% of the enterprises, the mortality rate is above 5%. There is a low level of correlation between the mortality rate and income (r = -0.26). In broiler farming, mortality rate, and feed conversion ratio are factors that directly affect the success and income of the breeder. In broiler farming, the heating cost has the largest share of the total cost, followed by the litter cost. They are followed by labor, electricity, and pesticide costs. Variable costs account for three-quarters of the total operating costs. The farms have a mean gross value of production of $23.797 per m² and $1.400 per broiler in a breeding period. The profit margin is 0.572 $/kg per broiler. The mean enterprise net income in the breeding period is $9.197 per m² and $0.541 per broiler. These findings suggest that broiler farming is a profitable venture.

Edible Snail Production in Europe

Simple Summary

Edible snails are a good source of easily digestible nutrients. They are easy to breed and their farming is more environmentally friendly than traditional livestock: they need little space, use less feed per kg of growth, and emit significantly less greenhouse gases. This review aims to present the most important issues related to the breeding of edible snails in European conditions: their importance, maintaining systems, the value of meat and caviar, and the feed used during the animals’ rearing and fattening period.

Abstract

The human population is growing; food production is becoming insufficient, and the growing awareness of the negative impact of traditional animal husbandry on the environment means that the search for alternative methods of providing animal protein is continuously underway. The breeding of edible snails seems to be a promising option. The most popular species of edible snails in Europe include the brown garden snail Cornu aspersum (Müller, 1774) (previously divided into two subspecies: Cornu aspersum aspersum (Müller, 1774) and Cornu aspersum maxima (Taylor, 1883)), as well as the Roman Snail—Helix pomatia Linnaeus, 1758. These animals are highly productive, require relatively little space, are easy to breed and their maintenance does not require large financial outlays. This review focuses on the prospects of food snail farming in Europe. It discusses the living conditions, the nutritional value of the snails’ meat, and the way of feeding the animals, paying particular attention to issues still not scientifically resolved, such as the need for micro and macro elements, as well as fat and carbohydrates.

Meta-analysis of the effects of mycotoxins and yeast cell wall extract supplementation on the performance, livability, and environmental sustainability of broiler production

The effect of mycotoxins (MT) on broiler performance without or with the inclusion of yeast cell wall extract (YCWE, Mycosorb, Alltech, Inc., KY) was evaluated in a random-effects meta-analysis. Data was extracted from 25 research experiments with a total of 10,307 broilers. Broilers fed MT had lower (P < 0.001) body weight gain (BWG, −217 g), reduced feed intake (FI, −264 g), increased feed conversion ratio (FCR, 0.12), and greater mortality by 2.01%. Inclusion of YCWE improved (P < 0.001) BWG (59 g) and FI (65 g), lowered FCR (−0.05), and reduced mortality by 1.74%. Additionally, change in European Production Efficiency Factor (EPEF) was assessed. Feeding MT lowered (P < 0.001) EPEF while YCWE increased (P < 0.001) EPEF. Finally, the carbon footprint of production was evaluated. Control fed birds produced an estimated 1.93 kg CO2-equivalent/kg liveweight (LW), while MT fed broilers produced 2.13 kg CO2-equivalent/kg LW and YCWE inclusion lowered this to 2.03 kg CO2-equivalent/kg LW which resulted in −25 tonnes less CO2-equivalent output per 100,000 birds with YCWE. In conclusion, mycotoxins can play a role in reducing broiler performance and farm production output, as well as increase the carbon footprint. Inclusion of YCWE in feed under a mycotoxin challenge can improve broiler performance and output, as well as lower carbon footprint, which could play a role in farm efficiency, profitability, and environmental sustainability.

Biomass Potential and Utilization in Worldwide Research Trends—A Bibliometric Analysis

Biomass, as a part of renewables, is a resource found in large quantities and is a basis for many different industries. This paper presents the most important trends and characteristics of research in biomass potential and biomass utilization on a world scale. The main objective of this work is to analyze the state of research and trends in biomass potential and biomass utilization from 1974 to 2021, including 7117 relevant documents. The methodology part comprised two main stages: obtaining data from Scopus and then exporting the data into Excel. The VOSviewer bibliometric tool was used to analyze clusters of countries and groups of keywords. Research on this topic experienced significant development after 2000; moreover, the global trend of publications marked a significant increase after 2012. China and India have shown exponential growth, followed by USA, Germany, and UK. An important trend globally is that energy topics are gaining more importance and percentage annually, especially in photovoltaics and new generations of biofuels in terms of keywords. The paper aims to provide a tool for the scientific community by introducing the current state and potential tendencies in this special field, including the various sides of biomass use.

Effect of Feeding 0.8% Dried Powdered Chlorella vulgaris Biomass on Growth Performance, Immune Response, and Intestinal Morphology during Grower Phase in Broiler Chickens

An experiment was performed to study the effects of a low inclusion level of Chlorella vulgaris (CV) biomass in broiler diets on performance, immune response related to inflammatory status, and the intestinal histomorphology. The study was performed with 120 Ross 308 male broiler chickens from 0−35 days of age. The broilers were housed in 12 floor pens (1.5 m2) bedded with wood shavings. The broilers received a three phase diet program, either with 0.8% CV biomass (CV) or without CV (CON). Each diet program was replicated in six pens. The final body weight increased (p = 0.053), and the feed conversion ratio (FCR), corrected for body weight, was reduced (p = 0.02) in birds fed CV compared to birds fed CON. In addition, decreased haptoglobins (p = 0.02) and interleukin-13 (p < 0.01) responses were observed during the grower phase of birds fed CV compared to the birds fed CON. A strong correlation (r = 0.82, p < 0.01) was observed between haptoglobin response and FCR. Histomorphology parameters of the jejunum were not different between the groups. It was concluded that the inclusion of 0.8% CV biomass in broiler diets is effective in influencing immune responses related to inflammatory status and promoting broiler growth.

Convergence and the Matthew Effect in the European Union Based on the DESI Index

The European Commission (EC) has monitored Member States' digital progress through the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) since 2014. The DESI index currently ranks the EU Member States and monitors their progress based on four core and 33 individual indicators. We sought to determine whether convergence between the Member States could be detected using the DESI’s annual databases. By examining the variation in the indices, we propose the existence of a so-called “Matthew effect”, i.e., the “rich get richer” syndrome among the 27 EU Member States. We also hypothesised that the COVID-19 pandemic would influence the change in the DESI. Issues investigated were those using bibliometric, statistical-mathematical methods. The σ-convergence analysis was used to estimate the reduction over time of the differences between the Member States, while the β-convergence analysis was used to estimate the rate of catching up with the initial level of development. A PCA analysis was performed to verify the Mathew effect with additional λ-variances considering real GDP per capita change. The σ-convergence was confirmed over the period 2016–2021. The β-convergence was significantly confirmed, and the research also revealed that the half-life of catching up is approximately 20 years. The suggestion of a Matthew effect in the 2016–2021 period, although not significantly confirmed, tends to suggest its existence. The COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on the value of the DESI index is likely to be affected, but future studies are needed to find support for this hypothesis. The study concludes that convergence between the EU-27 Member States can be detected based on the DESI, but this does not imply convergence for all four core DESI indicators.
