Photo elicitation to explore health and social exclusion with rooming house residents in Ottawa, Canada

Little is known about how rooming house residents perceive how housing influences their health, despite higher morbidity and premature death compared to other Canadians. The social exclusion framework of the Social Knowledge Exchange Network (SEKN) conceptualized by Popay et al. (2008) was used to investigate how rooming houses are linked to health among ten rooming house residents from six rooming houses in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Study activities included taking photos to show how living in a rooming house affects health, a community walk-about with the principal investigator, a focus group, and individual interviews. Thematic analysis revealed two broad themes: Housing is Health Care, and Just Managing Today. Findings suggest that structural inequalities and siloed care contribute to the health of rooming house residents, including the balance between poverty and desire to maintain housing, and how residents cope with this stress. If health care providers want to help alleviate the disparities in rooming house residents' health, they need to broaden the lens through which health is conceptualized.

"Now I Feel a Little Bit More Secure": The Impact of SNAP Enrollment on Older Adult SSI Recipients

In June 2019, California expanded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) eligibility to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries for the first time. This research assesses the experience and impact of new SNAP enrollment among older adult SSI recipients, a population characterized by social and economic precarity. We conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 20 SNAP participants to explore their experiences with new SNAP benefits. Following initial coding, member-check groups allowed for participants to provide feedback on preliminary data analysis. Findings demonstrate that SNAP enrollment improved participants' access to nutritious foods of their choice, contributed to overall budgets, eased mental distress resulting from poverty, and reduced labor spent accessing food. For some participants, SNAP benefit amounts were too low to make any noticeable impact. For many participants, SNAP receipt was associated with stigma, which some considered to be a social "cost" of poverty. Increased benefit may be derived from pairing SNAP with other public benefits. Together, the impacts of and barriers to effective use of SNAP benefits gleaned from this study deepen our understanding of individual- and neighborhood-level factors driving health inequities among low-income, disabled people experiencing food insecurity and SNAP recipients.

Examining Sociodemographic Factors, Food Insecurity and Obesity of Food Pantry Clients in Alaska: A Cross Sectional Study

Food insecurity continues to be high despite the increasing use of emergency food assistance. Research shows that food insecurity among food pantry clients is over 50-70%. Despite the high rates, there remains the paradox of people who are both food insecure and obese. Limited research has examined links between obesity, food insecurity, and food pantry clients. This cross-sectional study examined the relationship between food security, weight, and sociodemographic factors of clients at the largest food pantry in Alaska. On-site surveys were completed with 148 clients between February and March of 2018. Descriptive statistics, chi-square models, and a multivariate logistic regression were used to describe participants and determine any associations. Alaska food pantry clients are primarily over 45 years old, work at least part time, and make less than $25,000 per year. A majority of participants (n = 148) were either overweight or obese (69.6%) and food insecure (88.4%). No significant associations were found between weight and food security status. Despite the lack of statistical significance, results help understand pantry clients' demographic, food security, and weight status. Providing emergency food assistance and addressing underlying causes of food insecurity or obesity, such as the ability to access healthy food, are needed first steps.
