Use of Health Information and Communication Technologies to Promote Health and Manage Behavioral Risk Factors Associated With Chronic Disease: Applications in the Field of Health Education

Application Value of Information-Based Health Education and Continuity of Care in Patients With Peptic Ulcer

Objective: This study is to assess the application value of information-based health education and continuity of care in patients with PU (peptic ulcer). Methods: Patients (116) with PU who have been treated in the hospital between January 2019 and October 2020 were taken as research objects and equally assigned to a control group and an observation group in a random manner. In contrast to the routine care applied to the control group, the observation group received information-based health education and continuity of care intervention. The clinical efficacy, the mastery of health knowledge, self-care ability, medication compliance, quality of life, mental state, and nursing satisfaction of the two groups were compared. Results: After the intervention, the total effective rate, health knowledge adequate rate, Exercise of Self-Care Agency (ESCA) scores of all dimensions, the MOS 36-item short-form health survey (SF-36) scores of all dimensions, medication compliance rate, and total nursing satisfaction of the observation group all notably exceeded those of the control group, with a p < 0.05. Patients of the group with continuity of care intervention showed lower Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) scores, as compared to the group with conventional care (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Information-based health education and continuity of care elevates the medication adherence and nursing satisfaction of patients with PU, enhances disease-related knowledge of patients and their self-care ability, and eventually ameliorates the quality of life and psychological state. It is worthy of clinical application.

Practical and Ethical Considerations for Schools Using Social Media to Promote Physical Literacy in Youth

The rapid development of social media has led to its increased use by children and adolescents for health and well-being purposes. Accordingly, social interactions resulting from social media use can be further integrated into physical and health education pedagogy. Given the relationship between increased physical literacy and positive health outcomes, best practices and lessons learned from social media use in the healthcare industry should be adopted by health and physical educators practicing in schools. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to comment on several practical and ethical challenges and opportunities associated with using social media to improve physical literacy among youth. Specifically, two of the most prominent issues are discussed in depth: (1) integration of social media in physical education settings that educate children and adolescents about the biopsychosocial effects of physical activity, and (2) use of wearable technologies among youth to accrue experiences that enhance physical literacy competencies. In our opinion, health and physical educators who utilize the ALL-ENGAGE Playbook described in this commentary will successfully reach, engage, and impact students with popular social media that adequately promotes physical literacy, including through experiential use of wearable technologies.

Personal health information in research: Perceived risk, trustworthiness and opinions from patients attending a tertiary healthcare facility

BACKGROUND

Personal health information is a valuable resource to the advancement of research. In order to achieve a comprehensive reform of data infrastructure in Australia, both public engagement and building social trust is vital. In light of this, we conducted a study to explore the opinions, perceived risks and trustworthiness regarding the use of personal health information for research, in a sample of the public attending a tertiary healthcare facility.

METHODS

The Consumer Opinions of Research Data Sharing (CORDS) study was a questionnaire-based design with 249 participants who were attending a public tertiary healthcare facility located on the Gold Coast, Australia. The questionnaire was designed to explore opinions and evaluate trust and perceived risk in research that uses personal health information. Concept analysis was used to identify key dimensions of perceived risk.

RESULTS

Overall participants were supportive of research, highly likely to participate and mostly willing to share their personal health information. However, where the perceived risk of data misuse was high and trust in others was low, participants expressed hesitation to share particular types of information. Performance, physical and privacy risks were identified as key dimensions of perceived risk.

CONCLUSION

This study highlights that while participant views on the use of personal health information in research is mostly positive, where there is perceived risk in an environment of low trust, support for research decreases. The three key findings of this research are that willingness to share data is contingent upon: (i) data type; (ii) risk perception; and (iii) trust in who is accessing the data. Understanding which factors play a key role in a person's decision to share their personal health information for research is vital to securing a social license.

Negotiating contradictions: engaging disparate stakeholder demands in designing for active and healthy ageing

Purpose

Designing technologies for active and healthy ageing (AHA) requires a subtle understanding of end users (primary stakeholders) and healthcare professionals (secondary stakeholders). Often, their perspectives can be heterogeneous and contradictory. Identifying and negotiating them may be a challenge for designers. The purpose of this paper is to present our approach to understanding and negotiating contradictory stakeholder perspectives when designing AHA technologies for older adults.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conducted an exploratory interview study with 15 community-dwelling older adults and 11 healthcare stakeholders, including doctors, health insurance agencies, policymakers and caregivers. The authors analyzed the interview material and negotiated contradictory perspectives.

Findings

Three major issues among stakeholders emerged: perspectives on AHA; perceived benefits and drawbacks of AHA technologies; and concerns about data privacy, control and trust.

Research limitations/implications

The results show the heterogeneity and contradictions in stakeholder perspectives on AHA technologies and how these perspectives may be negotiated. This could help understand and facilitate long-term use of AHA technologies among older adults.

Originality/value

This study alerts researchers to contradictory perspectives among older people and healthcare stakeholders and the importance of involving them in the design of AHA technologies.

Using information and communication technologies to involve patients and the public in health education in rural and remote areas: a scoping review

Background

Patient and public involvement (PPI) in health education is a practice whereby research and education are carried in collaboration ‘with’ patients and/or citizens, maintaining their role as a team member or expert. PPI in health education is of great interest for all stakeholders in the field, as it can make program development more relevant to the public and increase its utilization by the target population. However, little is known about how PPI should be implemented in different settings particularly in rural and remote areas. Therefore, a deeper understanding of how PPI works in different environments is needed. We aim to explore how information and communication technologies (ICT) are used for PPI in health education programs in rural and remote areas.

Methods

We performed a scoping review. Two reviewers independently selected 641 studies from five electronic databases. Data were extracted, charted and validated by the senior researcher and study lead. We performed a narrative synthesis to map the literature.

Results

Of the initial 641 articles identified, 5 fit the eligibility criteria. Most of the studies targeted community members at large. Consultation and collaboration were the main levels of PPI, which included communities at large and specific at-risk groups. The main forms of ICT used were telephone and Internet, followed by teleconferences, electronic health records, and weblogs. No study measured the effectiveness of ICT for involving patients in health education in rural and remote areas.

Conclusion

Telephone and Internet were the most frequently used forms of PPI in health education in rural areas with consultation and collaboration as the main levels of PPI there. No study measured the impact of ICT for PPI in health education in rural areas. Due to this, measuring the impact of ICT in rural and remote areas as a means for PPI in health education of medical students, health professionals and patients requires further study.

Electronic Health Information Exchange Opportunities for Self-management of Care: Responses from Older Adults With and Without Cancer History in the United States

PURPOSE OF STUDY

Of 15.5 million US cancer survivors, 80% are ≥ 55 years. Supporting older patients in care self-management through electronic health information (EHI) exchange may enhance recovery. We assessed: (1) perceived importance of EHI access to adults ≥ 55 years (incl survivors) and (2) age-related preferences for EHI exchange.

RECENT FINDINGS

Older adults are one of the fastest-growing user groups for internet/technologies. Most older adults 55-64 years are active internet users, and use among adults ≥ 65 years is growing quickly as baby boomers mature. Understanding EHI patient-provider exchange preferences may provide opportunities for older patients but also begin to address the future needs of other patient populations, including cancer survivors. We observed a "digital divide" for perceived importance of EHI access and EHI exchange interests. Engaging older adults (i.e., ≥ 75 years) to improve comfort/experience with technologies may support EHI use in self-management. Survivors may have distinct EHI needs/preferences than older adults without cancer history.
