Factors influencing nurses' perceptions of occupational safety

FACTORS AFFECTING NURSES' ATTITUDES TOWARDS RISKS IN THE WORK ENVIRONMENT: A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY

AIM

This study aimed to examine the factors affecting nurses' attitudes towards risks in the work environment.

BACKGROUND

Nurses' attitudes towards work environment-associated risks affect both risk management and employee health.

METHODS

This descriptive study was conducted with 338 nurses working in a public hospital, university hospital, and private hospital. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form and the Nurses' Attitudes Towards Work Environment Risks Scale.

RESULTS

Nurses were found to have a positive attitude towards risk in the work environment. Regression analysis showed that nurses' attitudes towards risk was affected by institution, gender, access to unit-specific risk management training, past experiences of sharp penetrating tool injuries, acceptance of risks due to the belief that risks are unavoidable, exposure to violence from colleagues, exposure to biological hazards, and neglect to take risk precautions.

CONCLUSIONS

This study's results show that nurses' attitudes towards risk in the work environment is affected by both individual and organizational factors.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT

This study's results can help institutions and nurse managers understand the factors affecting nurses' attitudes towards work-related risks, thereby allowing them to determine the primary strategies that may be used to address these factors.

The Relationship between Work Environments and Intention to Leave in Nursing: A Cross-sectional and Correlational Study

Objective: Unfavorable work environments are among the factors that affect nurses’ intention to leave. This study was explored to examine the relationship between nurses’ work environments and their intention to leave. Methods: This cross-sectional and correlational design study was carried out with 547 nurses working in a university, a private hospital, and a teaching hospital between November 2016 and February 2017. The Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index and a question about intention to leave was used. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression analysis were used in the analysis of the data. Results: The mean total score of scale was found to be M= 2.30±0.56 and nurses' perceptions of work environments to be unfavorable. It was found that; 13.9% of the nurses did not intend to leave, 35.5% had a low, and 50.8% had a high intention to leave. [Occupational safety and health promotion in the context of nurse staffing: A scoping review]

Occupational safety and health promotion in the context of nurse staffing: A scoping review Abstract. Background: Increasing workload has led to a rise in mental and physical burden among nurses. In order to prevent this, it should be investigated, whether and to what extent aspects of occupational safety and health promotion can be integrated into nurse-staffing ratios. Aims: The objective of this scoping review was to identify ways and approaches of including occupational safety and health promotion into existing nurse-staffing ratios. Methods: A scoping review was conducted. The literature search took place in relevant professional databases. Articles in English and German language published between January 2015 and April 2020 with a focus on (care) organisations, staffing, occupational safety and/or health promotion, and person-related services were included. Results: Fifteen articles met the inclusion criteria. Three main topics were identified: staffing methods, leadership and control, and work organisation and design. No evidence was found regarding the inclusion of occupational health and safety and health promotion in staffing procedures. However, there is a demand for consideration of aspects "beyond numbers". Conclusions: In the further development of staffing-ratios, factors should be included that go beyond quantifiable measures and, by doing so, also address occupational safety and health promotion.

Investigation of the Perception of Occupational Safety, Work Stress and Happiness in Healthcare Workers

This study aims to examine the relationships between occupational safety, work stress and happiness perceptions of nurses and other healthcare workers working in a university hospital. No sample was selected in the study, the data collection tool was distributed to all employees who agreed to participate in the study and 195 usable questionnaires have been obtained. According to the correlation analysis results, there are negative and weak relationships between occupational safety and work stress, positive and weak relationships between occupational safety and happiness, and negative and weak relationships between work stress and happiness. According to the regression analysis results, it has been determined that perceived occupational safety explains 4.1% of the total variance on work stress, 8.4% of the total variance on happiness and perceived work stress explains 12.4% of the total variance on happiness. The study also found that the variable affecting perceived happiness the most is work stress.

Evaluation of the validity and reliability of the Revised Professional Practice Environment Scale for Turkish society

BACKGROUND

Professional practice environment is a concept comprising autonomy, teamwork and professional motivation.

AIM

We aimed to validate and demonstrate the reliability of the Turkish version of the Revised Professional Practice Environment Scale in this study.

METHODS

The study has a methodological design with a sample of 306 nurses working in university hospitals located in two different regions in Turkey. The data of the study were collected between July 2019 and January 2020 using introductory information form and the Revised Professional Practice Environment Scale. In the analysis of the data, Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient was employed using SPSS 22.0 and Amos 23.0, whereas exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and Pearson correlation analysis were applied to test the construct validity.

RESULTS

The Cronbach alpha value obtained for the whole scale was 0.89, ranging between 0.68 and 0.86 for the subscales. RMSEA, SRMR, GFI and χ² /df, which account for the fit indices of the 29-item and 6-factor structure of the scale, were at an acceptable level.

CONCLUSION

We concluded that the Revised Professional Practice Environment Scale is a valid and reliable measurement tool fit for use in Turkish environments.
