The rules of mature sex: Sexual scripts and the global challenge of rising STIs

Sexual health continues to be a socially complex problem globally with rising rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) despite extensive government and health marketing initiatives. In particular, STIs are rising at a greater rate in mature consumers than any other age group with the main reason cited as lack of condom use. The rules around condom use are based on sexual scripts or internalised guidelines and thus a key step in developing social marketing initiatives to increase condom use and address this global challenge is identifying the sexual scripts that motivate and inhibit condom use by mature consumers. Using sexual script theory, this research involves interviews with 24 mature single heterosexual Australian consumers to identify the sexual scripts that can be leveraged in health marketing to address the grand challenge of increasing mature consumer participation in protective sexual health behaviours.

Factors Affecting Condom-Use Behaviors Among Female Emerging Adults in South Korea

Purpose

To date, no studies have examined the association between gender-driven power dynamics and the decision-making process for condom use in South Korea. This study aimed to identify predictors of condom-use behaviors among female emerging adults in South Korea.

Participants and Methods

This study used a cross-sectional design and recruitment was conducted using social network services. The participants comprised 169 female college students aged 18‒25 years who were actively engaging in sexual intercourse.

Results

The results showed that attitudes toward condom use was a stronger predictor of condom-use behaviors than sexual double standards. A significant implication of this study is the need for novel approaches to address condom use in female emerging adults. Potential approaches should consider gender dynamics and have cultural and social relevance for South Korean society.

Conclusion

The current findings offer insight into developing future interventions tailored to the population to promote condom use, thereby preventing STDs/HIV, unwanted pregnancies, abortions, and other negative consequences in female emerging adults in South Korea.

An Examination of Condom Brand's Social Media Influence on Sexual Health Messages

Social media is a primary source of sexual health information for young adults. Increased exposure to sexual health education on social media is associated with safer sexual behavior. Given the diversity of social media accounts, condom brands may be a trusted source of sexual health information. We quantified user interactions on the social media posts of the three most frequently used social media sites of condom brands from January 2020 to June 2021. We analyzed the reach each account had in terms of sexual health information separated into three categories: sexual health education, sexual health resources and social issues relating to sexual health. On Instagram, 48% of posts provide sexual health education, 5% mention resources, and 23% mention social issues. On YouTube 68% of posts provide sexual health education, 35% mention resources, and 31% mention social issues. Providing sexual health education had a positive association with likes on Instagram (n = 923, t = 4.09, p < .001). In terms of sexual health education topics, posts pertaining to reproductive health and sexual self-acceptance were a positive predictor of likes on Instagram (n = 56, t = 7.00, p < .001, n = 77, t = 2.37, p = .015 respectively). Posts pertaining to sex were a positive predictor of likes both on Instagram (n = 74, t = 2.79, p = .005) and YouTube (n = 57, t = 2.21, p = .029). These findings suggest that the sexual health education and resources provided by condom brands have significant reach and positive reception. To promote sexual health to a larger and more receptive audience, future research and education campaigns should recognize and utilize the social media influence of condom brands.

Explicating factors that explain condom use intention among in-school adolescents in Botswana: a structural equation modelling approach

Knowledge with respect to adolescents' intentions to engage in protective sexual behaviours is still deficient in numerous countries around the world, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) where HIV prevalence is the highest. Increasing cross-sectional research suggests that the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) is robust in predicting condom use intentions. This study used secondary, baseline data from a study involving 794 in-school adolescents. A structural equation model was applied to the data. Latent variables were used to validate the applicability of the TPB in HIV/AIDS prevention among adolescents in the Botswana context. The predictors of interest were all derived from the TPB. The results revealed that the TPB predictors, apart from affective and instrumental attitude, were predictive of condom use intention among Batswana adolescents. The independent variables explained 57% of the variance in the model. These results suggest that the TPB is recommended as a framework to establish the predictors of condom use intention among Batswana in-school adolescents. Policy makers working on developing HIV education programmes or interventions targeted at adolescents should improve the intention to use condoms via promotion of positive instrumental attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control beliefs of condom use.

Health psychology in Ghana: A review of the multidisciplinary origins of a young sub-field and its future prospects

This article presents a historical overview of psychology applied to health and health psychology in Ghana. A brief history of health, illness and healthcare in Ghana is introduced. Then, the history of psychology in Ghana is presented, with signposts of the major turns in the field in relation to psychology and other disciplines applied to health and the emergence of health psychology as a sub-field. Selected health psychology studies are reviewed to highlight ideological trends in the field. Finally, future prospects are considered in terms of how the sub-field can transition into an established critical field with unique contributions to make to global health psychology.
