Does the Presence of a Physical Disability Affect Classification of Sexual Assault?

The occurrence of sexual assault is common and problematic, especially among those with disabilities. While many other characteristics of the victim, perpetrator, and situation involving a sexual assault have been shown to affect perceptions, only one study has examined the impact of a hypothetical victim with a physical disability. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the effect that a victim and/or perpetrator's physical disability status has on individuals' classification of encounters as sexual assault.University students over the age of 18 (n = 207) completed an anonymous online survey which included reading an ambiguous scenario involving a sexual assault in which either the victim, perpetrator or neither was in a wheelchair. Participants classified the scenario as either representing a sexual assault or not and completed the Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance scale and demographic information. A binary logistic regression model was conducted to examine the effects of conditions, participant gender and RMA score on sexual assault classification.In the scenario with the victim in a wheelchair, 71.6% of participants agreed sexual assault occurred; when the perpetrator was in a wheelchair 58.6% classified the scenario as sexual assault. In the control condition 61.4% agreed sexual assault occurred. Condition was not associated with classification at a statistically significant level; however, the effect sizes indicate participants were more likely to classify sexual assault when the victim was in a wheelchair (OR = 1.41), but less likely to blame a perpetrator in a wheelchair (OR = 0.69) compared to the control condition.Despite a lack of statistical significance, the data show a clear trend away from blaming individuals with disabilities in sexual assault scenarios. These findings can have implications within the legal system where incorrect decisions may be made due to bias based on disability status.

Avaliação de motéis e pousadas em relação à acessibilidade para pessoas com deficiência ou restrição de mobilidade

Resumo Introdução Pessoas com deficiência se deparam com inúmeras barreiras no desempenho da atividade sexual; dentre elas, está o acesso a locais acessíveis destinados a essa finalidade. Objetivo O objetivo do presente estudo foi mapear e avaliar a acessibilidade arquitetônica de estabelecimentos que têm como atividade-fim o sexo, tais como motéis e pousadas, localizados na região metropolitana de Belém. Método Trata-se de uma pesquisa de caráter quantitativo, transversal, descritivo, na qual foram avaliados 22 estabelecimentos, através de um questionário de avaliação de acessibilidade elaborado pelos pesquisadores, contendo 11 questões objetivas sobre a acessibilidade arquitetônica de banheiros, rampas de acesso, elevadores, sinalização, formas de comunicação, altura da cama e área de circulação. Resultados Os resultados acerca da sinalização sonora e visual demonstraram que 32% dos estabelecimentos não apresentam nenhuma das formas de sinalização, assim como comunicação alternativa e piso tátil. Em contrapartida, 82% dos estabelecimentos avaliados apresentaram altura dos interfones, interruptores e sinalizadores dentro dos padrões. Em relação à acessibilidade dos banheiros, 43% dos estabelecimentos não apresentaram nenhum mobiliário acessível. Conclusão O presente estudo demonstra resultados não satisfatórios quanto aos parâmetros básicos de acessibilidade dos motéis participantes, constituindo-se graves barreiras ao acesso do público com algum tipo de deficiência. Conclui-se que há a necessidade de maiores discussões sobre o assunto, além de fiscalização para o cumprimento das normas de acessibilidade e mobiliário acessível para que pessoas com deficiência possam usufruir desses serviços.

Sex workers’ narratives about clients with disabilities: can training improve sexual health in Portugal?

Abstract People with disabilities face barriers that limit their sexual lives. In Portugal, some individuals with physical impairments have shown interest in resorting to sexual assistance provided by trained professionals, according to the client’s preferences and needs. However, in Portugal, sex workers lacking any formal training represent the only way to access commercial sex services. Thus, this study analyzes the experiences of sex workers that provide services for disabled clients. The interviews of thirteen sex workers were analyzed using the thematic analysis method proposed by Braun and Clarke. The key findings show that men seek out sexual and emotional satisfaction from sex work. Additionally, specificities inherent to the lack of training and the relationships established tend to embarrass professionals. Finally, we conclude that training coupled with sexual education and popular awareness about gender differences in the pursuit of sex is fundamental to improve the sexual health of those who choose sex services as a way of sexual expression.
