Abstract
BACKGROUND Cervical cancer is caused by oncogenic human papillomaviruses (HR-HPV) and is common among Kenyan women. Identification of factors that increase HR-HPV persistence is critically important. Kenyan women exposed to aflatoxin have an increased risk of HR-HPV detection in cervical specimens. This analysis was performed to examine associations between aflatoxin and HR-HPV persistence. METHODS Kenyan women were enrolled in a prospective study. The analytical cohort for this analysis included 67 HIV-uninfected women (mean age 34 years) who completed at least two of three annual study visits and had an available blood sample. Plasma aflatoxin was detected using ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC)-isotope dilution mass spectrometry. Annual cervical swabs were tested for HPV (Roche Linear Array). Ordinal logistic regression models were fitted to examine associations of aflatoxin and HPV persistence. RESULTS Aflatoxin was detected in 59.7% of women and was associated with higher risk of persistent detection of any HPV type (OR = 3.03, 95%CI = 1.08-8.55, P = 0.036), HR-HPV types (OR = 3.63, 95%CI = 1.30-10.13, P = 0.014), and HR-HPV types not included in the 9-valent HPV vaccine (OR = 4.46, 95%CI = 1.13-17.58, P = 0.032). CONCLUSIONS Aflatoxin detection was associated with increased risk of HR-HPV persistence in Kenyan women. Further studies, including mechanistic studies are needed to determine if aflatoxin synergistically interacts with HR-HPV to increase cervical cancer risk.

Abstract
This work presents the formation of biochar with calcium nanoparticles (NPsCa) in function of pyrolysis time (C10, C30, C60, C120 and C180 min) using the Citrus tangerina peel and their evaluation in the remotion of Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in aqueous phase. Firstly, the Citrus tangerina was studied by Thermogravimetric analysis to determine the optimal temperature (TGA), obtaining a result of 600 °C. The biochar (NPsCa) were characterized by Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), as well as surface properties including the identification of functional groups by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FTIR), and energetic states through the X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The adsorption studies were carried out on the different materials and later, the experimental data was adjusted to different mathematical models, obtaining the best fit of the kinetic data to the Ho-McKay model, whilst the adsorption isotherms were adjusted to the model of Langmuir, which indicates that the Aflatoxin B1 adsorption process is carried out through a monolayer chemisorption process with maximum sorption capacities (qm) ranging between 15.72 and 63.22 μg g-1 with the 180th minute being the adequate time to obtain the carbon with the best surface properties and the best adsorption capacity. Additionally, it was observed that each material can be reused up to five times in accordance with the results from the reuse cycles.

Abstract
According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, mycotoxicoses constitute the second most pressing food safety problem worldwide, with most cases occurring in developing countries. Maize (Zea mays L.), the main staple for many Latin Americans, is one of the best suitable substrates for mycotoxigenic Aspergillus fungi. Aflatoxins (AFs) produced primarily by Aspergillus flavus, are of significant concern, especially in developing countries. While AFs production occurs mainly in warmer, tropical, and subtropical environments, recent evidence suggests that global climate change favours their presence in regions with little or no awareness of this issue. AFs interfere with metabolic processes, causing cancer and other health disorders resulting in health hazards and even death. The setting of national acceptable regulatory levels of AFs is necessary for Latin American countries. Unfortunately, no estimates of the economic impact of AFs in this region are currently available nor the cost of regulatory programs designed to reduce health risks to animals and humans. This review explores relevant data about incidence of AFs in maize produced in the region and the adverse effects of the consumption of contaminated foods and the associated health consequences for Latin American consumers. Regulations aimed to mitigate AFs exposure to consumers are also reviewed and identified gaps for researchers and actors of the maize value chain are also proposed.

Abstract
Cervical cancer (CC) is one of the most serious threats to the lives of women; co-factors in addition to oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) infection may be important in causing CC. Women in Mexico are exposed to dietary aflatoxin B1, a potent carcinogen, which may act as a co-factor, in inducing progression to CC. Scarce studies are addressing environmental risks associated with the development of CC, thus the study aimed to establish a relationship between the presence of AFB1 and the detection of human papillomavirus in the genome of Mexican women. Forty samples from cervical tissue of women infected with HPV were obtained; positive results regarding the HPV type (16 and/or 18) were found in 92.5% women and the presence of AFB1-DNA adducts were detected in 77.5% of the same positive HPV samples. Detection of AFB1-DNA adducts and genomic concentrations were correlated with the detection of two oncogenic types of HPV 16 and 18. AFB1-DNA positivity and higher genomic concentrations of AFB1-DNA adducts were correlated with an increased risk of oncogenic detection of HPV in cervical samples from women in Mexico. As a secondary objective, a hypothetical interaction of the adducts with the NRF2 pathway has been proposed, therefore activation of p62 and in turn E6 and E7 (HPV proteins) would inhibit the formation of autophagosomes, which would result in a presence or recurrence of CC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cervical cancer is common in Kenyan women. Cofactors in addition to infection with oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) are likely to be important in causing cervical cancer, as only a small percentage of HPV-infected women will develop this malignancy. Kenyan women are exposed to dietary aflatoxin, a potent carcinogen and immunosuppressive agent, which may be such a co-factor. METHODS Demographics, behavioral data, plasma, and cervical swabs were collected from 88 HIV-uninfected Kenyan women without cervical dysplasia. HPV detection was compared between women with or without plasma AFB1-lys and evaluated in relation to AFB1-lys concentration. RESULTS Valid HPV testing results were available for 86 women (mean age 34.0 years); 49 women (57.0%) had AFB1-lys detected and 37 (43.0%) had none. AFB1-lys detection was not associated with age, being married, having more than secondary school education, home ownership, living at a walking distance to health care ≥60 minutes, number of lifetime sex partners, or age of first sex. AFB1-lys detection and plasma concentrations were associated with detection of oncogenic HPV types. CONCLUSIONS AFB1-lys-positivity and higher plasma AFB1-lys concentrations were associated with higher risk of oncogenic HPV detection in cervical samples from Kenya women. Further studies are needed to determine if aflatoxin interacts with HPV in a synergistic manner to increase the risk of cervical cancer.

Aflatoxin and viral hepatitis exposures in Guatemala: Molecular biomarkers reveal a unique profile of risk factors in a region of high liver cancer incidence. PLoS One 2017; 12:e0189255. Abstract
Liver cancer is an emerging global health issue, with rising incidence in both the United States and the economically developing world. Although Guatemala experiences the highest rates of this disease in the Western hemisphere and a unique 1:1 distribution in men and women, few studies have focused on this population. Thus, we determined the prevalence and correlates of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) exposure and hepatitis virus infection in Guatemalan adults. Healthy men and women aged ≥40 years (n = 461), residing in five departments of Guatemala, were enrolled in a cross-sectional study from May—October of 2016. Serum AFB1-albumin adducts were quantified using isotope dilution mass spectrometry. Multivariate linear regression was used to assess relationships between AFB1-albumin adduct levels and demographic factors. Biomarkers of hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus infection were assessed by immunoassay and analyzed by Fisher’s exact test. AFB1-albumin adducts were detected in 100% of participants, with a median of 8.4 pg/mg albumin (range, 0.2–814.8). Exposure was significantly higher (p<0.05) in male, rural, low-income, and less-educated participants than in female, urban, and higher socioeconomic status participants. Hepatitis B and C seropositivity was low (0.9% and 0.5%, respectively). Substantial AFB1 exposure exists in Guatemalan adults, concurrent with low prevalence of hepatitis virus seropositivity. Quantitatively, AFB1 exposures are similar to those previously found to increase risk for liver cancer in Asia and Africa. Mitigation of AFB1 exposure may reduce liver cancer incidence and mortality in Guatemala, warranting further investigation.

Abstract
Cytochrome P450 2A13 (CYP2A13) is an extrahepatic enzyme that mainly expresses in human respiratory system, and it is reported to mediate the metabolic activation of aflatoxin B1. Due to the structural similarity, AFG1 is predicted to be metabolized by CYP2A13. However, the role of CYP2A13 in metabolic activation of AFG1 is unclear. In present study, human bronchial epithelial cells that stably express CYP2A13 (B-2A13) were used to conduct the effects of AFG1 on cytotoxicity, apoptosis, DNA damages, and their response protein expression. Low concentrations of AFG1 induced significant cytotoxicity and apoptosis, which was consistent with the increased expressions of pro-apoptotic proteins, such as C-PARP and C-caspase-3. In addition, AFG1 increased 8-OHdG and γH2AX in the nuclies and induced S phase arrest and DNA damage in B-2A13 cells, and the proteins related to DNA damage responses, such as ATM, ATR, Chk2, p53, BRCA1, and γH2AX, were activated. All the above effects were inhibited by nicotine (a substrate of CYP2A13) or 8-MOP (an inhibitor of CYP enzymes), confirming that CYP2A13 mediated the AFG1-induced cytotoxicity and DNA damages. Collectively, our findings first demonstrate that CYP2A13 might be an efficient enzyme in metabolic activation of AFG1 and helps provide a new insight into adverse effects of AFG1 in human respiratory system.
