Correlation of death anxiety with coping strategies among Palestinian women with breast cancer: a cross-sectional study

Background

Death anxiety and maladaptive coping accompany breast cancer diagnoses. The coping mechanisms and death anxiety among Palestinian patients with breast cancer have not been studied.

Aim

To assess the prevalence of death anxiety and its relationship with coping strategies among Palestinian women with breast cancer who are treated in Beit Jala Governmental Hospital in Bethlehem.

Method

A cross-sectional design was used, and 214 breast cancer patients who visited the Beit Jala Governmental Hospital in Bethlehem were recruited. Templer's Death Anxiety Scale and the Brief COPE Scale were used. To investigate the relationship between coping strategies and death anxiety, frequency, percentages, chi-square tests, and Pearson's correlation tests were utilized.

Results

The results indicated that 58.40% of the patients experienced death anxiety. The participants who used positive reframing (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.487, p = < 0.026), self-blame (AOR = 1.309, p = < 0.023), and religion (AOR = 1.260, p = < 0.031) as coping mechanisms were more likely to experience death anxiety. Conversely, the participants who adopted substance use (AOR = 0.657, p < 0.005) and active coping (AOR = 0.629, p < 0.007) as coping strategies had a lower likelihood of experiencing death anxiety.

Conclusion

The study revealed that breast cancer patients tended to use a combination of functional and emotional coping strategies and that a significant proportion of these patients (58.4%) experienced symptoms of death anxiety. This study emphasizes the significance of screening for death anxiety and understanding the coping strategies utilized by the patients. Gaining this understanding will assist in identifying patients who need more guidance and support.

Prevalence, Predictors, and the Role of Social Support in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Among Cancer Patients in Oman

BACKGROUND

Cancer, regardless of type, presents a formidable life challenge affecting patients' psychological well-being. Many perceive cancer diagnosis and treatment as traumatic.

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to estimate posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) prevalence in Omani adult cancer patients, identify predictors, and probe its correlation with social support.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study enrolled 343 adult cancer patients undergoing treatment from 3 hospitals in the Middle East country of Oman. Posttraumatic stress disorder was assessed via the PTSD Checklist for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, and perceived social support was measured using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support.

RESULTS

The prevalence of PTSD among Omani adult cancer patients was 27.4%. Enhanced social support correlated with lower PTSD risk (odds ratio [OR], 0.95; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.93-0.97; P < .001). Predictors included shorter time since diagnosis (OR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.97-0.99; P = .017), no psychiatric referral (OR, 0.46; 95% CI, 0.23-0.96; P = .04), and insufficient social support (OR, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.94-0.98; P < .001).

CONCLUSIONS

Social support significantly mitigates PTSD risk. Routine assessment and psychiatric referrals, especially for recent diagnoses, can enhance patients' lives. Reevaluating the PTSD diagnostic cutoff score (33) merits consideration for improved clinical use.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

Early PTSD assessment, particularly for low-social support new-diagnosed patients, is crucial for timely intervention. Psychiatric referrals can guide specialized treatments. Stressing social support's role can guide healthcare providers, including oncology nurses, in supporting patients effectively.

The impact of posttraumatic stress symptoms on quality of life among battered wives in India amidst the COVID-19 pandemic

Background

Battery against women has alarmingly escalated since the COVID-19 Pandemic, resulting in increase in post-traumatic stress disorder and negatively influenced their quality of life.

Purpose

The purpose of this research was to find the effect of PTSD on the quality of life among battered wives in Madhya Pradesh, India, during the said plague.

Method

Two hundred and seventy-seven battered wives, aged 20 years old to 49 years old participated in this study. Purposive sampling method was employed for data collection. The assessment instruments used were the respondents' demographic data, the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Scale-Interview version DSM-5, and World Health Organization Quality of Life. Whereas, for the quantitative data analysis, descriptive statistics, and regression analysis were used. Furthermore, the demographic details of the participants-age, education, duration of marriage, economic status, types of violence and number of children -severely impacted which added to the posttraumatic stress symptoms among domestically abused women.

Results

Findings revealed that posttraumatic stress symptoms were a strong predictor of poor quality of life among battered wives (R2 = 0.587; β = 0.766). The study also has found that the demographic details of the participants-age, education, duration of marriage, economic status, types of violence and number of children were significantly related with vulnerability to posttraumatic stress symptoms among battered women.

Conclusion

Battered women's mental health conditions continued to be a major issue in India, and psychological interventions were strongly recommended.
