Erfassung mentaler Rotationsleistungen im Grundschulalter

Zusammenfassung. Die mentalen Rotationsleistungen als eine Komponente visuell-räumlicher Fähigkeiten stehen in enger Verbindung zur mathematischen Entwicklung sowie zum schulischen und beruflichen Erfolg in den MINT-Fächern. Daneben werden geringe mentale Rotationsleistungen bei Kindern mit einer Lese-Rechtschreibstörung diskutiert. Derzeit ist kein Messinstrument für den Schuleingangsbereich verfügbar, welches sowohl die Lösungsgenauigkeit als auch die Reaktionszeit misst und den allgemeinen Kriterien der Psychometrie (Objektivität, Validität und Reliabilität) entspricht. Anliegen der vorgelegten Untersuchung ist es, diese Lücke zu schließen. In zwei Studien wurde ein computerbasiertes Testverfahren für Schulkinder bis zur dritten Klassenstufe entwickelt, welches die Besonderheiten bei der Erfassung mentaler Rotationsleistungen junger Kinder berücksichtigt. Die vorgenommenen testtheoretischen Betrachtungen an 300 Grundschulkindern waren zufriedenstellend. Die Daten konnten wesentliche Befunde der Literatur bestätigen und wurden kritisch diskutiert. Mit dem cMR liegt nun ein ökonomisches chronometrisches Testverfahren zur Erfassung mentaler Rotationsleistungen vor, welches bereits bei Kindern ab der ersten Klasse einsetzbar ist.

Gender stereotypes: implicit threat to performance or boost for motivational aspects in primary school?

Based on stereotype threat and stereotype lift theory, this study explores implicit stereotype threat effects of gender stereotypes on the performance of primary school children in mathematics. Moreover, effects of implicit gender stereotypical cues (gender-specific task material) on motivational aspects were explored, which have revealed mixed results in stereotype threat research in the past. N = 151 German primary school children (47.7% female; mean age: M = 9.81, SD = 0.60) calculated either stereotypical or neutral mathematical text problems before motivational aspects were assessed. Contradicting our expectations, results neither revealed a stereotype threat effect on girls’ performance nor a lift effect on the boys. Instead, girls calculating stereotypical tasks outperformed girls in the control group, whereas boys’ performance did not significantly differ compared to the control group. Regarding motivational aspects, only traditional gender differences emerged as girls reported significantly more pressure and tension calculating the mathematical tasks. The discussion focuses on the way in which stereotypes can affect children’s cognitive performance and in turn, their mathematical performance.

Influence of the stimulus material on gender differences in a mental-rotation test

Gender differences in mental-rotation tests with cube figures as rotational material are well examined and robust. Besides biological or socialization factors, task characteristics could partly be responsible for men's advantage in mental rotation. Therefore, we investigated in two studies the influence of different rotational materials on the gender differences in mental-rotation performance. In the first study, 134 undergraduate students (89 women, 45 men) participated using a mental-rotation test with either cube or pellet figures. Significant gender differences in favour of men but no interaction of gender and material were found. In the second study, 189 undergraduate students (110 women, 79 men) solved a mental-rotation test with either male or female-stereotyped objects. Significant gender differences appeared only when male-stereotyped objects were used as rotational material, but not for female-stereotyped material. A significant interaction of gender and material appeared. Hence, some rotational objects seem to have an influence on participants' mental-rotation performance and the gender differences in this task while others do not affect performances of women and men.
