Abstract
Acute kidney injury (AKI) secondary to severe falciparum malaria possesses a high mortality rate; however, a prognostic marker of renal dysfunction has not yet been identified. Thus, we reported a case of a patient with AKI secondary to falciparum malaria who underwent hemodialysis and a renal biopsy due to prolonged renal dysfunction. The male patient, in his 50 s, presented to our hospital with vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and decreased level of consciousness. The Giemsa-stained peripheral blood film revealed approximately 5% parasitemia, and a rapid diagnostic test was positive for Plasmodium falciparum. He was diagnosed with severe falciparum malaria and was started on quinine hydrochloride. Hemodialysis was initiated due to the decreased urine output and fluid retention. Subsequently, he was weaned off hemodialysis. The histopathological analysis of a renal biopsy revealed interstitial fibrosis, tubular atrophy, and chronic inflammatory cell infiltration; thus, malarial nephropathy was diagnosed. Thereafter, his renal function stabilized, and he was discharged from the hospital. The urinary liver-type fatty acid-binding protein (L-FABP) level decreased before renal function improved. Our report highlighted that long-term follow-up is essential for severe AKI secondary to malaria. The urinary L-FABP level may be a useful prognostic indicator of AKI secondary to severe falciparum malaria.

Abstract
Individuals, societies, and the environment are affected by neglected and emerging diseases. These diseases result in a variety of severe outcomes, including permanent disabilities, chronic diseases such as chronic kidney disease, and even mortality. Consequences include high health care expenditures, loss of means of support, social stigma, and social exclusion. The burden of these diseases is exacerbated in low- and middle-income countries owing to poverty, inadequate fundamental infrastructure, and the absence of health and social protection systems. The World Health Organization is committed to promoting the following public health strategies to prevent and control neglected tropical diseases: preventive chemotherapy; intensive case management; vector control; provision of safe drinkable water, sanitation, and hygiene; and veterinary public health. In addition, it promotes a One Health strategy, which is a collaborative, multisectoral, and interdisciplinary approach to achieving the greatest health outcomes by recognizing the interdependence of human beings, animals, plants, and their shared environment. This article provides knowledge and strategies for the prevention and treatment of neglected and emerging diseases, with a particular concentration on kidney diseases, as part of a comprehensive approach to One Health.

Abstract
Leptospirosis is a zoonotic infection with a global distribution, though it has a greater impact on marginalized rural agricultural and urban communities in developing countries. Kidney injury, which can lead to severe and lethal infections, is the most frequent complication associated with leptospirosis. Novel biomarkers are being studied as tools for assessing kidney injury in different pathological processes to improve early detection. This review aimed to gather information on the use of novel kidney biomarkers for human leptospirosis. A search of the literature was carried out in September 2021 using the parameters "((kidney) OR (renal) OR (chronic kidney disease) OR (acute kidney injury)) AND ((biomarker) OR (marker)) AND ((Leptospira) OR (leptospirosis))". The review identified 11 original studies that evaluated the performance of 15 kidney biomarkers related to leptospirosis. Assessment of the evidence for biomarker utility was limited because of the small number of studies and sample sizes. Although some biomarkers were associated with kidney disease, no specific biomarker appeared to be ready for clinical practice, and more research in this field is necessary.

Abstract
Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is a vector-borne disease caused by an intracellular protozoa of the genus Leishmania that can be lethal if not treated. VL is caused by Leishmania donovani in Asia and in Eastern Africa, where the pathogens’ reservoir is represented by humans, and by Leishmania infantum in Latin America and in the Mediterranean area, where VL is a zoonotic disease and dog is the main reservoir. A part of the infected individuals become symptomatic, with irregular fever, splenomegaly, anemia or pancytopenia, and weakness, whereas others are asymptomatic. VL treatment has made progress in the last decades with the use of new drugs such as liposomal amphotericin B, and with new therapeutic regimens including monotherapy or a combination of drugs, aiming at shorter treatment duration and avoiding the development of resistance. However, the same treatment protocol may not be effective all over the world, due to differences in the infecting Leishmania species, so depending on the geographical area. This narrative review presents a comprehensive description of the clinical picture of VL, especially in children, the diagnostic approach, and some insight into the most used pharmacological therapies available worldwide.

Abstract
Leptospirosis is a zoonotic and waterborne disease worldwide. It is a neglected infectious disease caused by Leptospira spp., as well as a reemerging disease and global public health problem with respect to morbidity and mortality both in humans and animals. Leptospirosis emerges as a leading cause of acute febrile illness along with hepatorenal injury in many countries, including Thailand. While most affected persons are symptomatic in acute disease, which is always difficult to differentiate from other tropical diseases, there is growing evidence of subtle manifestations that cause unrecognized chronic symptoms. The kidney is one of the common organs affected by Leptospires. Although acute kidney injury in the spectrum of interstitial nephritis is a well-described characteristic in severe leptospirosis, chronic kidney disease from leptospirosis is widely discussed. Early recognition of severe leptospirosis leads to reduce morbidity and mortality. Thus, in this review, we highlight the spectrum of characteristics involved in leptospirosis kidney disease and the use of serologic and molecular methods, as well as the treatments of severe leptospirosis.
