A comparison of the spatial variability of denitrification and related soil properties in restored and natural depression wetlands in Indiana, USA

Fine-scale spatial homogenization of microbial habitats: a multivariate index of headwater wetland complex condition

With growing public awareness that wetlands are important to society, there are intensifying efforts to understand the ecological condition of those wetlands that remain, and to develop indicators of wetland condition. Indicators based on soils are not well developed and are absent in some current assessment protocols; these could be advantageous, particularly for soils, which are complex habitats for plants, invertebrates, and microbial communities. In this study, we examine whether multivariate soil indicators, correlated with microbial biomass and community composition, can be used to distinguish reference standard (i.e., high condition) headwater wetland complexes from impacted headwater wetland complexes in central Pennsylvania, USA. Our reference standard sites existed in forested landscapes, while our impacted sites were situated in multi-use landscapes and were affected by a range of land-use legacies in the 1900s. We found that current assessment protocols are likely underrepresenting sampling needs to accurately represent site mean soil properties. On average, more samples were required to represent soil property means in reference standard sites compared to impacted sites. Reference standard and impacted sites also had noticeably different types of microbial habitats for the two multivariate soil indices assessed, and impacted sites were more homogenized in terms of the fine-scale (i.e., 1 and 5 m) spatial variability of these indices. Our study shows promise for the use of multivariate soil indices as indicators of wetland condition and provides insights into the sample sizes and scales at which soil sampling should occur during assessments. Future work is needed to test the generalizability of these findings across wetland types and ecoregions and establish definitive links between structural changes in microbial habitats and changes in wetland soil functioning.

HYDROLOGICAL, PHYSICAL, AND CHEMICAL FUNCTIONS AND CONNECTIVITY OF NON-FLOODPLAIN WETLANDS TO DOWNSTREAM WATERS: A REVIEW

We reviewed the scientific literature on non-floodplain wetlands (NFWs), freshwater wetlands typically located distal to riparian and floodplain systems, to determine hydrological, physical, and chemical functioning and stream and river network connectivity. We assayed the literature for source, sink, lag, and transformation functions, as well as factors affecting connectivity. We determined NFWs are important landscape components, hydrologically, physically, and chemically affecting downstream aquatic systems. NFWs are hydrologic and chemical sources for other waters, hydrologically connecting across long distances and contributing compounds such as methylated mercury and dissolved organic matter. NFWs reduced flood peaks and maintained baseflows in stream and river networks through hydrologic lag and sink functions, and sequestered or assimilated substantial nutrient inputs through chemical sink and transformative functions. Landscape-scale connectivity of NFWs affects water and material fluxes to downstream river networks, substantially modifying the characteristics and function of downstream waters. Many factors determine the effects of NFW hydrological, physical, and chemical functions on downstream systems, and additional research quantifying these factors and impacts is warranted. We conclude NFWs are hydrologically, chemically, and physically interconnected with stream and river networks though this connectivity varies in frequency, duration, magnitude, and timing.

Denitrifying bacterial communities display different temporal fluctuation patterns across Dutch agricultural soils

Considering the great agronomic and environmental importance of denitrification, the aim of the present study was to study the temporal and spatial factors controlling the abundance and activity of denitrifying bacterial communities in a range of eight agricultural soils over 2 years. Abundance was quantified by qPCR of the nirS, nirK and nosZ genes, and the potential denitrification enzyme activity (DEA) was estimated. Our data showed a significant temporal variation considerably high for the abundance of nirK-harboring communities, followed by nosZ and nirS communities. Regarding soil parameters, the abundances of nosZ, nirS and nirK were mostly influenced by organic material, pH, and slightly by NO₃^-, respectively. Soil texture was the most important factor regulating DEA, which could not be explained by the abundance of denitrifiers. Analyses of general patterns across lands to understand the soil functioning is not an easy task because the multiple factors influencing processes such as denitrification can skew the data. Careful analysis of atypical sites are necessary to classify the soils according to trait similarity and in this way reach a better predictability of the denitrifiers dynamics.
