An applied paradigm for simple analysis of the lower limb kinematic chain in explosive movements: an example using the fencing foil attacking lunge

Assessing the Impact of Fencing on Postural Parameters: Observational Study Findings on Elite Athletes

The aim of the study was to evaluate whether the static stabilometric parameters among elite fencers, were affected by prolonged, asymmetric training regimen. A sample of 26 elite fencers of both genders, aged 19.15 ± 2.24 years, practising one of the three disciplines foil, épée, or sabre, was recruited for the study. Anthropometric measurements including thigh and calf circumferences and postural assessment based on the weight distribution on a stabilimeter platform were performed. Postural tone, as indicated by measures such as sway length and sway area ratio was calculated.. No notable anthropometric asymmetries were detected within the examined group The weight distribution patterns on the support quadrants in static stabilometric measurements did not suggest clinically significant issues. There were no significant differences among subgroups based on gender and lower limb dominance for both anthropometric and stabilimeter variables. However, 30.8% of participants showed anomalies in postural tone (hypertonic and hypotonic condition). Five out of eight athletes found with abnormal postural tone were foil fencers, suggesting a potential discipline-specific effect. Individual adjustments were found in foil fencers. These findings provide insights into the potential effects of fencing training on postural parameters among elite athletes.

Effects of biofeedback on whole lower limb joint kinematics and external kinetics

Biofeedback (BFb) is a useful tool to accelerate the skill development process. Limited research has applied BFb to the whole lower-limb in a complex skill therefore the aim of this research was to assess the effectiveness of a biofeedback intervention targeting whole lower limb kinematics. Thirty-two healthy participants were randomized to a BFb (n = 16) and a Control group (n = 16). Participants visited a motion capture laboratory on three occasions during one week, and returned for retention testing at 4-6 weeks. Following introduction to a novel lunge-touch task, visual BFb on lower limb joint kinematic extension angular velocities (ω) and timing were provided following each lunge. BFb was effective in increasing Hipω (F = 3.746, p = 0.03) and Kneeω (F = 10.241, p = 0.01). Peak Ankle_ω remained unchanged (F = 1.537, p = 0.23, η² = 0.05), however Peak Ankle_θ (F = 10.915, p < 0.001, η² = 0.27) and Ankle_ROM (F = 9.543, p < 0.001, η² = 0.24) significantly increased. Despite kinematic changes, there were no significant changes in any external kinetics. No significant correlations were found between Hipω, Kneeω or Ankleω and horizontal impulse (Impulse_Y: r = 0.20, p = 0.26; r = -0.11, p = 0.24; and r = 0.22, p = 0.28, respectively). Findings demonstrate that BFb can be used to alter multiple kinematic variables in a complex skill, but do not necessarily alter associated kinetic variables not directly targeted by BFb.

Task and Skill Level Constraints on the Generality of the Proximal–Distal Principle for Within-Limb Movement Coordination

This paper examines the influence of task and skill level constraints on the generality of proximal–distal control for within-limb movement coordination. Analysis and synthesis of the experimental findings leads to the proposition that proximal–distal is one of several within-limb patterns of coordination, including: the reverse distal–proximal sequence, simultaneous activation of segments, and other sequence variations of this. The probability of particular patterns occurring is induced by task constraints and skill level of the individual, together with their evolving biomechanical consequences, including: open/closed chain, absorption/propulsion of force, magnitude of momentum, and accuracy/timing. We develop the theoretical perspective that classes of task constraints induce particular types of neuromechanical organization to within-arm or within-leg segment coordination. In this task constraint framework, proximal–distal within-limb organization is a particular rather than a general case for within-limb coordination. The limitations of anatomically-based accounts of directional change for within-limb organization are discussed with reference to a general functional degrees of freedom task constraint framework for movement coordination and control.

Quantifying bi-variate coordination variability during longitudinal motor learning of a complex skill

Biofeedback (BFb) can enhance the motor learning process by guiding skill exploration. Too much BFb, however, can foster dependency leading to skill retention deficits once removed. A reducing BFb schedule could negate dependency effects, however limited methodologies exist to assess the effectiveness of an intervention during application. This research proposes a new bi-variate method (CI2_Area) to quantify coordination variability (Coord_Var) as a measure of skill exploration during a motor learning intervention. Thirty-two participants were introduced to a novel explosive-lunge task. A BFb group (n = 16) were provided with visual BFb on rear hip, knee and ankle joint extension magnitudes and timing during a 26-week reducing schedule BFb intervention. Coord_Var of hip-knee and knee-ankle angular velocities were quantified by calculating the area encompassed by the 95% confidence intervals of joint coupling angular-velocity bi-variate plots (CI2_Area). Linear regressions were fitted to group and individual Coord_Var longitudinal data. The BFb was effective in successfully altering whole limb technique within just two sessions, and these changes were retained. The BFb group demonstrated a continual increase of Coord_Var throughout the intervention, showing continual skill exploration strategies, while the Control group remained unchanged. Gradually increasing time between sessions, using a longitudinally reducing BFb schedule, successfully negates dependency effects on BFb while also encouraging motor learning. Manipulating time between sessions allows for the provision of a high frequency of 100% BFb without fostering dependency. The CI2_Area method was able to detect individual exploration strategies and could be used in the future to direct individual intervention modifications.
