Effects of a Support Program on Nurses’ Communication with Hospitalized Children’s Families

Nursing staff communication with pediatric patients and families in a pediatric transitional care unit: a best practice implementation project

OBJECTIVES

The objective of this project was to promote evidence-based practices regarding nursing communication with pediatric patients/families.

INTRODUCTION

Effective communication between healthcare providers and patients/families is an essential component of patient care and plays a vital role in patient outcomes. Ineffective communication among the healthcare team and patient families has been described as a significant factor contributing to adverse events and poor health outcomes.

METHODS

The project used JBI's Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System and Getting Research into Practice audit tool for encouraging evidence-based practices. A baseline audit was conducted, followed by the implementation of targeted strategies. The project was completed with a follow-up audit to determine change in practice.

RESULTS

Three evidence-based practices were utilized as audit criteria for the project. The baseline audit on the three audit criteria revealed an average compliance of 30%. After providing communication skills training to nursing staff and education and visual aids to patients/families and nursing staff regarding the use of white boards, follow-up audits revealed an average compliance of 62%, an increase of 32%.

CONCLUSIONS

These implementation strategies will continue to be utilized on the unit and will be implemented in other areas of the hospital to further improve communication between patients/families and their healthcare team.

Role-Play versus Standardised Patient Simulation for Teaching Interprofessional Communication in Care of the Elderly for Nursing Students

This study aims to describe and compare the effects of standardised patient simulation and role-play in the acquisition and retention of interprofessional communication in elderly care competence amongst nursing students. In this controlled clustered randomised trial, 121 nursing students attended a workshop on interprofessional communication in elderly care using role-play or standardised patient simulation. The study was conducted between September 2017 and February 2018. Participants’ knowledge, self-efficacy and communication skills were assessed using a simulated scenario at pre-test, post-test and 6-week follow-up points. Between-subject and within-subject differences were measured using counts and proportions of participants who achieved competence. Regardless of the strategy applied, a significant improvement in knowledge, skills, self-efficacy and overall interprofessional communication competence was found between pre-test and post-test. Moreover, there were significant differences between pre-test and follow-up for all the studied variables, but no differences were found between post-test and follow-up. Lastly, when comparing the success rates of both strategies, no significant differences were observed (p > 0.05). In conclusion, standardised patient simulation and role-play have been shown to promote an improvement on knowledge, self-efficacy and interprofessional communication skills in nursing students, although it is not possible to state which strategy is the most adequate for teaching this competency.

From intention to action: A systematic literature review of provider behaviour change-focused interventions in physical health and behavioural health settings

RATIONALE, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

It is clear there are significant delays in the uptake of best practices as part of routine care in the healthcare system, yet there is conflicting evidence on how to specifically align provider behaviour with best practices.

METHOD

We conducted a review of interventions utilized to change any aspect of provider behaviour. To extend prior research, studies were included in the present review if they had an active intervention targeting behaviour change of providers in health or behavioural-health settings and were published between 2001 and 2020.

RESULTS

Of 1547 studies, 44 met inclusion criteria. Of 44 studies identified, 28 studies utilized contextually relevant interventions (eg, tailored to a specific provider population). Twenty six interventions with a contextually relevant approach resulted in provider behaviour change.

CONCLUSIONS

Findings are promising for encouraging provider behaviour change when interventions are tailored to be contextually relevant, as both single-component and multifaceted interventions were successful when they were contextually relevant. It is critical to conduct additional research to ensure that providers sustain behaviour changes over a long-term beyond an intervention's implementation and evaluation period.

Improving Patient- and Family-Centered Communication in Pediatrics: A Review of Simulation-Based Learning

Patient- and family-centered care focuses on relationships among patients, families, and health care providers that are mutually beneficial and improve health care outcomes and provider satisfaction. Building relationships is a key component of the provision of excellent health care and can be taught and enhanced through simulation-based communication skills training. This article reviews the available literature on simulation-based learning as used to improve patient- and family- centered communication in the discipline of pediatrics. In this narrative review, we examine the various methods, theories, and frameworks on which simulation-based learning for communication skills are built with the goal of assisting pediatric providers in using this powerful educational technique. Training and evaluation of professional competency in pediatric nursing: perspective of university professors

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the training and evaluation of professional competency to work in the area of pediatric nursing based on the conceptions and experiences of university professors.

METHOD

A qualitative study conducted with pediatric nursing professors from six public undergraduate courses in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The data were collected by semi-structured interview and analyzed by the Content Analysis method.

RESULTS

Sixteen professors participated. Five main themes emerged: competency definition, attributes to act with children, advances in the training of professional competency, challenges to enable training pediatric competency, and methods and instruments for evaluating competency acquisition to work in the area of pediatric nursing.

CONCLUSION

The findings of this study point to the importance of a balanced approach in the cognitive, psychomotor and affective dimensions in training and evaluating professional competency in pediatric nursing, as well as extending the curricular valorization of this area of knowledge and practice.
