Experiences of Iranian Teen Mothers with Parenting Stress: A Qualitative Study

Psychosocial dimension of adolescent pregnancy: a phenomenological study on life experiences

AIM

This study aimed to assess the lived experiences of adolescent pregnant young women, with a specific focus on the psychosocial aspect of adolescent pregnancy, using a phenomenological approach.

DESIGN

Employing the phenomenological research method, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted between 3 August and 18 August 2023 with 15 young women (mean age = 21.86 years; SD = 1.06) living in a province in eastern Turkey who had undergone adolescent pregnancy 3-5 years before.

METHODS

The criterion sampling method, a form of purposive sampling, was used to form the sample group. Interviews were carried out until data saturation was reached. All interviews were recorded and transcribed, and thematic analysis was utilised to analyse the data. The study adhered to the COREQ checklist for reporting.

RESULTS

Through data analysis, three main categories (reflections on adolescent pregnancy, challenges due to adolescent pregnancy, and effects of adolescent pregnancy) and nine sub-themes (emotions, roles and responsibilities, perception of social support, cognitive, emotional, behavioural, mental, physical, and social) emerged.

CONCLUSION

Our study highlights the adverse psychosocial impact of adolescent pregnancy on young women. Young women who got married at an early age before attaining full physical, social, and psychological maturity grappled with the substantial burdens of adolescent pregnancy and adjusting to their new roles. The study's implications are significant, emphasising the necessity of addressing the psychosocial facets of adolescent marriage and pregnancy, and gaining valuable insights for the future.

Developing the concept of maternal in teenage mothers: a hybrid model

Objectives

Maternal transition is a challenging developmental process requiring physical, mental, social, and cognitive preparedness. Therefore, the transition to motherhood is even more challenging for teenagers who are exposed to both the maturation process and adaptation to the parenting role. Therefore, the present study was conducted to provide a deeper understanding of the maternal role in Iranian teenage mothers.

Methods

A three-phase hybrid model was adopted for concept analysis. In the theoretical phase, 50 articles were analyzed. In the fieldwork phase, 10 participants were interviewed. In the final phase, the findings of the previous two stages were analyzed. This study was conducted between October 2021 and November 2022. After determining the attributes, antecedents, and consequences, a final definition was presented for parenting in teenage mothers.

Results

The concept of motherhood for teenage mothers was described as "a process-oriented phenomenon in nature," "complex, challenging and multidimensional," "development with immature transition," "a turning point in life," "a stressful event," "affected by several factors," and "bidirectional effects on life" according to antecedents, including "the level of received social support," "reaction to teenage motherhood," "teenage mother's characteristics," and "family structure" leading to "positive psychological consequences," "negative psychological consequences," and "loss of educational and career opportunities."

Conclusion

This study provides a suitable ground for evaluating the concept of motherhood in teenage mothers and employing it in nursing care of teenage mothers and children by identifying this concept.

Mães adolescentes, autocuidado e cuidado infantil: validação de conteúdo de um calendário histórico de eventos

RESUMO Objetivo: Validar o conteúdo da ferramenta Event History Calendar Mãe Adolescente: fortalecendo o autocuidado e o cuidado da criança. Método: Estudo metodológico com a técnica Delphi, realizado em duas rodadas, envolvendo 37 especialistas de enfermagem. Na coleta de dados, de dezembro/2019 a agosto/2020, foi utilizado um questionário semiestruturado composto por 47 itens relacionados às duas dimensões da ferramenta: Autocuidado e Cuidado da criança. O Índice de Validade de Conteúdo ≥ 0,80 foi utilizado para avaliar a concordância entre os especialistas. Elementos qualitativos foram analisados quanto à clareza e abrangência do conteúdo. Resultados: Na primeira rodada, 46 itens apresentaram Índice de Validade de Conteúdo ≥ 0,80. Os elementos qualitativos apontaram necessidade de maior clareza para o público adolescente. Após as alterações, a ferramenta apresentou 30 itens. Na segunda rodada, os 30 itens avaliados alcançaram Índice de Validade de Conteúdo ≥ 0,80. As considerações qualitativas foram traduzidas em modificações no conteúdo e sequência na versão final da ferramenta. Conclusão: A ferramenta validada obteve avaliação adequada dos itens de cada dimensão, relacionados ao autocuidado da mãe adolescente e cuidado da criança, com alto grau de compreensibilidade.

Adolescent mothers, self-care and childcare: content validation of an Event History Calendar

OBJECTIVE

To validate the content of the tool Event History Calendar Adolescent Mother: strengthening self-care and child care.

METHOD

Methodological study using the Delphi technique, conducted in two rounds, involving 37 nursing specialists. In data collection, from December/2019 to August/2020, a semi-structured questionnaire composed of 47 items related to the two dimensions of the tool: Self-care and Child Care was used. The Content Validity Index ≥ 0.80 was used to assess agreement among the experts. Qualitative elements were analyzed for clarity and comprehensiveness of content.

RESULTS

In the first round, 46 items showed Content Validity Index ≥ 0.80. The qualitative elements pointed out more clarity for the adolescent audience. After the changes, the tool presented 30 items. In the second round, the 30 items evaluated achieved Content Validity Index ≥ 0.80. The qualitative considerations were translated into modifications in the content and sequence in the final version of the tool.

CONCLUSION

The validated tool obtained adequate evaluation of the items of each dimension, related to adolescent mother self-care and child care, with a high degree of comprehensibility.

Health, Psychology and Economic Status: Impact of Early Marriage

BACKGROUND: Early marriage is a global problem that harms teenagers. The occurrence of early marriage in rural areas is a common practice. AIM: This study aims to determine the impact of early marriage on aspects of health, psychology, and economic status comprehensively based on the causes of early marriage in rural area. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional study design. The sampling unit of this study was early marriage families from three sub-districts in the Ponorogo district, namely Sawoo, Ngrayun, and Pulung. The number of samples used as many as 75 families. The variables in this study consisted of health, husband’s psychology, wife’s psychology, and economic status. The statistical test used polychoric Principle Component Analysis (PCA) analysis to obtain health, psychological and economic status variables derived from several indicators. RESULTS: The results of this study indicate that in the healthcare variable, it appears that most of the respondents do not experience bleeding, do not have abdominal pain, and do not hurt on contact. Based on the emotion variable, the wife is more emotional than the husband. The results of polychoric PCA are based on scores that are divided into two categories. The results of the polychoric PCA analysis show that most of the early married couples have worse health and economic conditions, namely, 55% and 65%, respectively. Meanwhile, in the psychological condition of husband and wife, most of them have good conditions, namely, 75% and 83%. CONCLUSION: The impact of early marriage which shows poor results is on the health and economic aspects.
