Abstract
A taxonomic revision of Sturisoma is presented. Individuals including both type and non-type specimens of all valid species were examined. Sturisoma was found to comprise 10 valid species: Sturisoma barbatum, Sturisoma brevirostre, Sturisoma graffini, Sturisoma guentheri, Sturisoma lyra, Sturisoma monopelte, Sturisoma nigrirostrum, Sturisoma reisi, Sturisoma rostratum, and Sturisoma tenuirostre. Furthermore, four new species are described: Sturisoma ghazziae, new species, from the Araguaia River, belonging to the Tocantins-Araguaia basin, Central Brazil; Sturisoma careirensia, new species, from the middle Amazon basin, Brazil; Sturisoma rapppydanielae, new species, from the Purus River, Amazon basin, Brazil; and Sturisoma defranciscoi, new species, from the Putumayo and Solimões rivers, upper Amazon basin, Colombia, and Brazil. Sturisoma robustum is confirmed as synonym of S. barbatum, species registered along the Paraguay/Parana/La Plata River basin in Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. New records were found for S. nigrirostrum as present in the upper Amazon basin, in the Yavari River, Brazil, in addition to its already known locality, the Ucayali River, Peru. The distribution of the type species of the genus S. rostratum is limited to the lower portion of the Amazon basin in the Araguaia, Maranhão, Mearim, Tapajós, and Tocantins rivers and its affluents, Brazil, in contrast to the assumed widespread distribution across the main basins of South America, as previously proposed for the species; the Mearim River is a new record for the species. Updated diagnoses and descriptions are offered for species of Sturisoma, in addition to distribution maps and an identification key for the species.

Abstract
The aim of the present contribution is to review the taxonomy of the loricariid Sturisoma in the La Plata basin. The original description of the species S. barbatum is analyzed and compared to Regans later description of S. robustum. We noticed that Kners illustrations may have influenced the description by Regan and other later authors, leading to confusion in the taxonomy of Sturisoma. The diagnostic characteristics and molecular data of S. barbatum and S. robustum are discussed, and we concluded that the differences observed by previous authors are part of the intraspecific variation within a single species. This indicates that S. barbatum is a senior synonym of S. robustum. Sturisoma barbatum is compared to other Sturisoma species.

Abstract
Rineloricaria is the most diverse genus within the freshwater fish subfamily Loricariinae, and it is widely distributed in the Neotropical region. Despite limited cytogenetic data, records from southern and south-eastern Brazil suggest a high rate of chromosomal rearrangements in this genus, mirrored in remarkable inter- and intraspecific karyotype variability. In the present work, we investigated the karyotype features of Rineloricaria teffeana, an endemic representative from northern Brazil, using both conventional and molecular cytogenetic techniques. We revealed different diploid chromosome numbers (2n) between sexes (33♂/34♀), which suggests the presence of an ♀X1 X1 X2 X2 /♂X1 X2 Y multiple sex chromosome system. The male-limited Y chromosome was the largest and the only biarmed element in the karyotype, implying Y-autosome fusion as the most probable mechanism behind its origination. C-banding revealed low amounts of constitutive heterochromatin, mostly confined to the (peri)centromeric regions of most chromosomes (including the X2 and the Y) but also occupying the distal regions of a few chromosomal pairs. The chromosomal localization of the 18S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) clusters revealed a single site on chromosome pair 4, which was adjacent to the 5S rDNA cluster. Additional 5S rDNA loci were present on the autosome pair 8, X1 chromosome, and in the presumed fusion point on the Y chromosome. The probe for telomeric repeat motif (TTAGGG)n revealed signals of variable intensities at the ends of all chromosomes except for the Y chromosome, where no detectable signals were evidenced. Male-to-female comparative genomic hybridization revealed no sex-specific or sex-biased repetitive DNA accumulations, suggesting a presumably low level of neo-Y chromosome differentiation. We provide evidence that rDNA sites might have played a role in the formation of this putative multiple sex chromosome system and that chromosome fusions originate through different mechanisms among different Rineloricaria species.

Abstract
Gymnotus is the most studied genus of the order Gymnotiformes, but the morphological similarities of the different species make it difficult to identify taxa reliably. The present study is a continuation of the ongoing research into the taxonomic diversity of the stocks of Gymnotus sold as live bait in the Pantanal, Brazil. These studies have been based on cytogenetic analyses, DNA barcoding, and the analysis of coloration patterns. The results of the cytogenetic analysis confirmed the presence of three distinct strains, recognized as Gymnotus paraguensis, G. sylvius, and G. pantanal. However, the results revealed that the molecular operational taxonomic units identified as G. paraguensis actually include a relatively diverse set of fish, separated by considerable genetic distances. As the G. paraguensis specimens also presented considerable variation in coloration patterns, further genetic diversity analyses were conducted on these individuals, to test the hypothesis that more than one species is present in this cytotaxonomic unit. The haplotype network revealed a regional pattern in the distribution of this species. The results indicate that the observed variation in coloration patterns is associated with a high degree of phenotypic plasticity in G. paraguensis. These findings emphasize the importance of using an integrative approach for a more accurate diagnosis of Gymnotus, in particular, the species marketed as live bait for the fisheries of the upper Paraguay River basin in the Brazilian Pantanal.

Abstract
This study provides new insight into the chromosomal diversification in Loricariinae. We analyzed nine species from different Brazilian hydrographic basins, using conventional and molecular cytogenetic methods, aiming to understand the karyotypic diversification, and contribute with cytotaxonomic markers in this group considered one of the most diverse of Loricariidae. Our results evidenced a high karyotypic variability in diploid number (2n) ranging from 2n = 54 (Loricariichthys platymetopon and Loricariichthys anus), 2n = 60 (Rineloricaria reisi and Rineloricaria parva), 2n = 62 (Proloricaria prolixa), 2n = 64 (Loricaria cataphracta complex species), 2n = 66 (Sturisoma barbatum), and 2n = 68 (Pyxiloricaria menezesi). Different patterns of 18S and 5S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) were also identified, while slight divergences in heterochromatin distribution were observed. This high variability is probably related with independent events of Robertsonian translocations, pericentric inversions, and different mechanisms of rDNA sites dispersion (nonreciprocal translocation and transposable element [TEs] co-localization). In addition, our study provides a set of efficient chromosomal markers for the characterization of all analyzed species, and certainly, in future analyzes, will contribute as a useful cytotaxonomic tool in groups where the traditional taxonomy based on morphological data are not sufficient to clarify their relationship.

Abstract
The monotypic Astroblepidae fish family includes 81 species distributed along Central and Northern Andes in South America and Panamá in Central America; most aspects regarding its biology, taxonomy, and chromosomal features remain largely unknown. This study reports the karyotype of two sympatric Astroblepus species from the Colombian Andes, aiming to provide novel information on karyotype organization and reveal possible chromosomal rearrangements occurred on these species, through mapping of different repetitive DNA classes, including microsatellites and ribosomal DNA multigene families. The results showed differences in the chromosome number and karyotypic formula: Astroblepus grixalvii had 2n = 52 (28m+8sm +12st +4a) with the metacentric pair number 1 as the largest chromosome pair, whereas Astroblepus homodon had 2n = 54 (30m+8sm +8st +8a) and less evident chromosome size differences. Microsatellite probes marked the tips of all chromosomes in both species except the short arms of acrocentric pair numbers 24 and 25 in A. homodon. Each ribosomal probe marked different chromosome pairs in both species. Microsatellite patterns suggest that the 2n increase probably involved a centric fission event that occurred during the evolutionary history of these species. This is the first karyotype description of an Astroblepus species and it contributes to the theoretical framework about the karyoevolutionary trends within Loricarioidei.
