Engineering arrangement of nanoparticles within nanocomposite membranes matrix: a suggested way to enhance water flux

Research Progress and Application of Polyimide-Based Nanocomposites

Polyimide (PI) is one of the most dominant engineering plastics with excellent thermal, mechanical, chemical stability and dielectric performance. Further improving the versatility of PIs is of great significance, broadening their application prospects. Thus, integrating functional nanofillers can finely tune the individual characteristic to a certain extent as required by the function. Integrating the two complementary benefits, PI-based composites strongly expand applications, such as aerospace, microelectronic devices, separation membranes, catalysis, and sensors. Here, from the perspective of system science, the recent studies of PI-based composites for molecular design, manufacturing process, combination methods, and the relevant applications are reviewed, more relevantly on the mechanism underlying the phenomena. Additionally, a systematic summary of the current challenges and further directions for PI nanocomposites is presented. Hence, the review will pave the way for future studies.

Recent progress on improving the mechanical, thermal and electrical conductivity properties of polyimide matrix composites from nanofillers perspective for technological applications

The adoption of polymer nanocomposites in the design/manufacturing of parts for engineering and technological applications showcases their outstanding properties. Among the polymer nanocomposites, polyimide (PI) nanocomposites have attracted much attention as a composite material capable of withstanding mechanical, thermal and electrical stresses, hence engineered for use in harsh environments. However, the nanocomposites are limited to the application area that demands conduction polymer and polymer composites due to the low electrical conductivity of PI. Although, there has been advancement in improving the mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of PI nanocomposites. Thus, the review focuses on recent progress on improving the mechanical, thermal and electrical conductivity properties of PI nanocomposites via the incorporation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene and graphene oxide (GO) fillers into the PI matrix. The review summarises the influence of CNTs, graphene and GO on the mechanical and conductivity properties of PI nanocomposites. The authors ended the review with advancement, challenges and recommendations for future improvement of PI reinforced conductive nanofillers composites. Therefore, the review study proffers an understanding of the improvement and selection of PI nanocomposites material for mechanical, thermal and electrical conductivity applications. Additionally, in the area of conductive polymer nanocomposites, this review will also pave way for future study.

Application of zinc oxide and sodium alginate for biofouling mitigation in a membrane bioreactor treating urban wastewater

This research aimed to mitigate fouling in membrane bioreactors (MBR) through concurrent usage of zinc oxide as an antibacterial agent (A) and sodium alginate as a hydrophilic agent (H) within a polyacrylonitrile membrane (PM) structure. The antibacterial polymeric membranes (APM) and antibacterial hydrophilic polymeric membranes (AHPM) synthesized showed a higher porosity, mechanical strength and bacterial inhibition zone, and a lower contact angle in comparison with PM membranes. EDS, SEM and AFM analyses were used to characterize the chemical, structural, and morphological properties of PM, APM, and AHPM. The flux of PM, APM, and AHPM in MBR was 37, 48, and 51 l m^-2 h^-1 and COD removal was 81, 93.5, and 96.7%, respectively. After MBR operation for 35 days in an urban wastewater treatment, only 50% of the flux of PM was recovered, while the antibacterial and hydrophilic agents yielded a flux recovery of 72.7 and 100% for APM and AHPM, respectively.
