Steerable artificial magnetic bacteria with target delivery ability of calcium carbonate for soil improvement

The microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) has acquired significant attention due to its immense potential in sustainable engineering applications, particularly in soil improvement. However, the precise control of microbial-induced calcium carbonate precipitation remains a formidable challenge in engineering practices, owing to the uncertain movement paths of bacteria and the nonuniform distribution of soil pores. Taking inspiration from targeted therapy in medicine, this paper presents novel research on the development and validation of magnetically responsive bacteria. These bacteria demonstrate the ability to target calcium carbonate precipitation in a microfluidic chip, thereby promoting an environmentally friendly and ecologically sustainable biomineralization paradigm. The study focuses on investigating the migration of magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) in aqueous solutions and enhancing the stability of MNP culture liquids. A specially designed microfluidic chip is utilized to simulate natural sand particles and their pores, while an external magnetic field is applied to precisely control the movement path of the artificial magnetic bacteria, enabling targeted precipitation of calcium carbonate at the micron-scale. Verification of the engineered artificial magnetic bacteria and their ability to induce calcium carbonate precipitation is conducted through SEM-EDS analysis, microfluidic chip observations, and the application of the K-means algorithm and ImageJ software to analyze calcium carbonate formation. The influence of the concentration of magnetic nanoparticles on the calcium carbonate production rate was also studied. The results confirm the potential of the artificial magnetic bacteria for future engineering applications. KEY POINTS: • Sporosarcina pasteurii is first time successfully engineered into artificial magnetic bacteria. • The artificial magnetic bacteria show excellent performance of targeted transportation and directional deposition of CaCO3 in microfluidic chip. • The emergence of artificial magnetic bacteria promotes paradigm shift of next generation environmentally friendly biomineralization.

Extremely Soft, Stretchable, and Self-Adhesive Silicone Conductive Elastomer Composites Enabled by a Molecular Lubricating Effect

Softness, adhesion, stretchability, and fast recovery from large deformations are essential properties for conductive elastomers that play an important role in the development of high-performance soft electronics. However, it remains an ongoing challenge to obtain conductive elastomers that combine these properties. We have fabricated a super soft (Young's modulus 2.3-12 kPa), highly stretchable (up to 1500% strain), and underwater adhesive silicone conductive elastomer composite (SF-C-PDMS) by incorporating dimethyl silicone oil as a lubricating agent in a cross-linked molecular network. The resultant SF-C-PDMS not only exhibits superior softness but also can readily recover after a strain of 1000%. The initial resistance only decreases by 8% after 100000 cycles of tensile fatigue test (100% strain, 0.5 Hz, 15 mm/s). This multifunctional silicone conductive elastomer composite is obtained in a one-step preparation at room temperature using commercially available materials. Moreover, we illustrate the capabilities of this composite in motion sensing.

Influence of the filler distribution on PDMS-graphene based nanocomposites selected properties

Insufficient homogeneity is one of the pressing problems in nanocomposites' production as it largely impairs the properties of materials with relatively high filler concentration. Within this work, it is demonstrated how selected mixing techniques (magnetic mixer stirring, calendaring and microfluidization) affect filler distribution in poly(dimethylsiloxane)-graphene based nanocomposites and, consequently, their properties. The differences were assessed via imaging and thermal techniques, i.a. Raman spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry. As microfluidization proved to provide the best homogenization, it was used to prepare nanocomposites of different filler concentration, whose structural and thermal properties were investigated. The results show that the concentration of graphene significantly affects polymer chain mobility, grain sizes, defect density and cross-linking level. Both factors considered in this work considerably influence thermal stability and other features which are crucial for application in electronics, EMI shielding, thermal interface materials etc.

Development of a transferable coarse-grained model of polydimethylsiloxane

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a popular silicon-based polymer with advanced applications in microfluidics and nanocomposites. The slow dynamics of polymer chains in such complex systems hinders molecular dynamics investigations based on all atom force fields. This limitation can be overcome by exploiting finely tuned coarse-grained (CG) models. This paper develops a transferable CG model of PDMS, compatible with the recent Martini 3 force field, using structural and thermodynamic properties as targets in the parametrization, including a vast set of experimental free energies of transfer. We validate the model transferability by reproducing the correct scaling laws for the PDMS gyration radius in the melt and good and bad solvents. We successfully test the model by reproducing the wetting behavior of water and acetonitrile on PDMS and the phase behavior of a PDMS-peptide triblock copolymer system. This work sets the stage for computational studies involving the interaction between PDMS and many synthetic and biological molecules modeled within the Martini framework.

Structure and Diffusion of Ionic PDMS Melts

Ionic polymers exhibit mechanical properties that can be widely tuned upon selectively charging them. However, the correlated structural and dynamical properties underlying the microscopic mechanism remain largely unexplored. Here, we investigate, for the first time, the structure and diffusion of randomly and end-functionalized ionic poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) melts with negatively charged bromide counterions, by means of atomistic molecular dynamics using a united atom model. In particular, we find that the density of the ionic PDMS melts exceeds the one of their neutral counterpart and increases as the charge density increases. The counterions are condensed to the cationic part of end-functionalized cationic PDMS chains, especially for the higher molecular weights, leading to a slow diffusion inside the melt; the counterions are also correlated more strongly to each other for the end-functionalized PDMS. Temperature has a weak effect on the counterion structure and leads to an Arrhenius type of behavior for the counterion diffusion coefficient. In addition, the charge density of PDMS chains enhances the diffusion of counterions especially at higher temperatures, but hinders PDMS chain dynamics. Neutral PDMS chains are shown to exhibit faster dynamics (diffusion) than ionic PDMS chains. These findings contribute to the theoretical description of the correlations between structure and dynamical properties of ion-containing polymers.

Properties of Polysiloxane/Nanosilica Nanodielectrics for Wearable Electronic Devices

Polymer nanodielectrics characterized by good flexibility, processability, low dielectric loss and high dielectric permittivity are materials of interest for wearable electronic devices and intelligent textiles, and are highly in demand in robotics. In this study, an easily scalable and environmentally friendly method was applied to obtain polysiloxane/nanosilica nanocomposites with a large content of nanofiller, of up to 30% by weight. Nanosilica was dispersed both as individual particles and as agglomerates; in nanocomposites with a lower amount of filler, the former prevailed, and at over 20 wt% nanosilica the agglomerates predominated. An improvement of both the tensile strength and modulus was observed for nanocomposites with 5–15 wt% nanosilica, and a strong increase of the storage modulus was observed with the increase of nanofiller concentration. Furthermore, an increase of the storage modulus of up to seven times was observed in the nanocomposites with 30 wt% nanosilica. The tensile modulus was well fitted by models that consider the aggregation of nanoparticles and the role of the interface. The dielectric spectra showed an increase of the real part of the complex relative permittivity with 33% for 30 wt% nanosilica in nanocomposites at a frequency of 1 KHz, whereas the loss tangent values were lower than 0.02 for all tested nanodielectrics in the radio frequency range between 1 KHz and 1 MHz. The polysiloxane–nanosilica nanocomposites developed in this work showed good flexibility; however, they also showed increased stiffness along with a stronger dielectric response than the unfilled polysiloxane, which recommends them as dielectric substrates for wearable electronic devices.

Silane-Functionalized Carbon Dots and Their Polymerized Hybrids: From Optoelectronics to Biotherapy

Nanomaterials usually manifest unique properties in solutions but will be undermined in the solid state. It is necessary to incorporate them into substrates or hybrid them with other functional materials for multiple devices and applications. Though there are a variety of methods to inherit their intrinsic properties like fluorescent and mechanical performance, most nanohybrid materials would lose their transparency irreversibly when construct solid-state devices. As a hot topic of nanomaterials in recent years, scientific works found a type of carbon dots using silane coupling agents as precursors that can overcome the shortcoming. These carbon dots, called silane-functionalized carbon dots (SiCDs), are catching increasing interest due to their versatility. Silane coupling agents endow SiCDs with the ability to disperse in solvents or polymerize with matrices by blending or covalent bonds without loss of transparency and decline of performance. The distinguishing features make SiCDs an ideal high transmittance, high doping concentration nanomaterial. The synergistic effect of SiCDs and hybridized sol-gel solid structures can not only hold the optical features of CDs but also enhance their original physical and chemical performance. This highlight focuses on the connection between SiCDs and organosilanes. Plus, preparation methods, applications, and prospective of SiCDs are mentioned.

Polydimethylsiloxane-Assisted Catalytic Printing for Highly Conductive, Adhesive, and Precise Metal Patterns Enabled on Paper and Textiles

Paper and textile are two ideal carriers in wearable and printed electronics because of their flexibility and low price. However, the porous and fibrous structures restrain their use in printed electronics because the capillary effect results in ink diffusion. Especially, conventional metal ink needs to be post-treated at high temperatures (>150 °C), which is not compatible with paper and textile. To address problems involved in ink diffusion and avoid high-temperature treatment, herein, a new strategy is proposed: screen-printing of high-viscosity catalytic inks combined with electroless deposition of metal layers on paper and textile substrates. The ink consists of Ag nanoparticles, a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) prepolymer, and a curing agent. PDMS as a viscoelastic matrix of catalysts plays key roles in limiting ink diffusion, enhancing interfacial adhesion between the substrate and metal layer, keeping metal flexible. As a demonstration, metal Cu and Ni are printed, respectively. The printed precision (diffusion < 1% on filter paper) can be controlled by adjusting the Ag content in the PDMS matrix; interfacial adhesion can be enhanced by ink coating on substrate microfibers and metal embedding into the PDMS matrix. In addition, Cu on paper shows extremely low sheet resistance (0.29 mΩ/□), and Cu on nylon shows outstanding foldability with a resistance of less than five times of initial resistance during 5000 folding cycles.

Production of elastomer-based highly conductive hybrid nanocomposites and treatment with sulfuric acid

As an elastomer, poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) is used in various applications such as wearable technology and sealants, and is especially preferred in microelectromechanical device production due to its advantage in fabrication of microstructures. However, some of its applications such as sensor-based or electrode-based are limited due to its insulator aspect. Various conductive nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, graphite, carbon black, and silver nanoparticles were incorporated into the PDMS matrix for the production of conductive nanocomposites. In this study, we produced highly conductive PDMS nanocomposites by addition of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) in a three-dimensional network. Due to the synergistic effect between CNTs and GNPs inside a polymeric matrix, we expected to obtain PDMS nanocomposites more conductive than nanocomposites with only CNTs. Additionally, we investigated the effect of sulfuric acid treatment on the electrical conductivity and surface composition of prepared PDMS/MWCNT/GNP nanocomposites. Results indicated that the electrical conductivity in sulfuric acid-treated samples was significantly higher than in untreated samples. Levels of conductivity in the range of 270.7–1074.8 S/m were achieved; the higher ones were the samples treated with sulfuric acid solution.

Silicone Composites with CNT/Graphene Hybrid Fillers: A Review

This review is dedicated to versatile silicone rubber composites based on carbon nanotube/graphene (CNT/G) hybrid fillers. Due to their unique mechanical, electrical, thermal, and biological properties, such composites have enormous potential for medical, environmental, and electronics applications. In the scope of this paper, we have explored CNT/graphene/silicone composites with a different morphology, analyzed the synergistic effect of hybrid fillers on various properties of silicone composites, and observed the existing approaches for the fabrication of hybrid composites with a seamless, assembled, and/or foamed structure. In conclusion, current challenges and future prospects for silicone composites based on CNTs and graphene have been thoroughly discussed.

Emerging Functional Biomaterials as Medical Patches

Medical patches have been widely explored and applied in various medical fields, especially in wound healing, tissue engineering, and other biomedical areas. Benefiting from emerging biomaterials and advanced manufacturing technologies, great achievements have been made on medical patches to evolve them into a multifunctional medical device for diverse health-care purposes, thus attracting extensive attention and research interest. Here, we provide up-to-date research concerning emerging functional biomaterials as medical patches. An overview of the various approaches to construct patches with micro- and nanoarchitecture is presented and summarized. We then focus on the applications, especially the biomedical applications, of the medical patches, including wound healing, drug delivery, and real-time health monitoring. The challenges and prospects for the future development of the medical patches are also discussed.
