A comparative evaluation of resin- and varnish-based surface protective agents on glass ionomer cement - a spectrophotometric analysis

The development of resin-coating materials for enhancing elemental release of coated glass ionomer cements

This study aimed to develop resin coatings containing monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM), Sr/F-doped bioactive glass (Sr/F-BAGs), and pre-reacted glass ionomer fillers (SPG) that enhance ion release without detrimentally affecting the mechanical properties of GIC. The objective of this study was to evaluate the degree of monomer conversion (DC), biaxial flexural strength, surface microhardness, and ion release of the GICs coated with experimental coating materials compared to a commercial product (EQUIA Coat, EC). Four experimental resin coating materials containing 10-20 wt% of MCPM with Sr/F-BAGs and 5-10 wt% SPG were prepared. The DC of the coating material was determined using ATR-FTIR. The flexural strength and surface microhardness of the coated GICs were assessed. Fluoride and elemental (Ca,P,Sr,Si,Al) release were measured using fluoride-specific electrodes and ICP-OES. The DC of the experimental coating material (60-69 %) was higher than that of EC (55 %). The strength of GICs coated with experimental materials (35-40 MPa) was comparable to EC (37 MPa). However, their surface microhardness (13-24 VHN) was lower than EC (44 VHN). The experimental coating materials reduced fluoride release by ∼43 %, similar to EC (∼40 %). However, experimental coating materials promoted higher P and Sr release than EC. In conclusion, GICs coated with the experimental resin coating containing ion-releasing additives exhibited mechanical properties similar to those of the commercial product. The new coating materials promoted a higher level of ion release for GICs. These properties could potentially enhance remineralizing actions for the coated GICs.

Influence of Coating Material Thickness on the Attraction Force of Dental Magnetic Attachment: An In Vitro Study

Objectives

This study aimed to determine the influence of coating material thickness on the attraction force of dental magnetic attachment (DMA).

Materials and Methods

An in vitro experimental design was implemented using DMA as samples coated with different material types including polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and glass ionomer varnish. DMA consists of keeper and assembly. The coating material was applied to DMA in two ways, on the assembly only and both the keeper and assembly. The thickness of each coated DMA was measured with a digital micrometer, and analysis was subsequently conducted with a universal testing machine to evaluate potential alterations in magnetic attraction force. Comparison was made between the attraction force of both the coated and uncoated DMA serving as a control specimen.

Result

The thickness of the coating material applied to both the keeper and assembly was 25 μm, while PTFE and varnish coating on the assembly alone was estimated as 12 and 10 μm, respectively. The magnetic attraction force of the uncoated DMA was 613.63 gf. Following coating, the magnetic attraction force decreased by 34.02-79.45 gf. The ANOVA test indicated that the decrease in magnetic attraction observed across both types of coating material and technique did not show significant differences.

Conclusion

The thickness and type of coating material had no significant effect on magnetic attraction.

Structural, Physical, and Mechanical Analysis of ZnO and TiO2 Nanoparticle-Reinforced Self-Adhesive Coating Restorative Material

This study aimed to modify an EQUIA coat (EC; GC, Japan) by incorporating 1 and 2 wt.% of zinc oxide (ZnO; EC-Z1 and EC-Z2) and titanium dioxide (TiO₂; EC-T1 and EC-T2) nanoparticles, whereby structural and phase analyses were assessed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. Thermogravimetric analysis/differential scanning calorimetry, micro-hardness, and water absorption analyses were conducted, and the microstructure was studied by scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive spectroscopy. FTIR spectra showed a reduction in peak heights of amide (1521 cm^-1) and carbonyl (1716 cm^-1) groups. XRD showed peaks of ZnO (2θ ~ 31.3°, 34.0°, 35.8°, 47.1°, 56.2°, 62.5°, 67.6°, and 68.7°) and TiO₂ (2θ ~ 25.3°, 37.8°, 47.9, 54.5°, 62.8°, 69.5°, and 75.1°) corresponding to a hexagonal phase with a wurtzite structure and an anatase phase, respectively. Thermal stability was improved in newly modified materials in comparison to the control group. The sequence of obtained glass transitions was EC-T2 (111 °C), EC-T1 (102 °C), EC-Z2 (98 °C), EC-Z1 (92 °C), and EC-C (90 °C). EC-T2 and EC-T1 showed the highest (43.76 ± 2.78) and lowest (29.58 ± 3.2) micro-hardness values. EC showed the maximum water absorption (1.6%) at day 7 followed by EC-T1 (0.82%) and EC-Z1 (0.61%). These results suggest that EC with ZnO and TiO₂ nanoparticles has the potential to be used clinically as a coating material.
