Crossing horizons: unraveling perspectives on enhancing medical students' success through at-risk factor exploration

BACKGROUND

Medical universities often face the ongoing challenge of identifying and supporting at-risk students to enhance retention rates and academic success. This study explores a comprehensive analysis of perceived at-risk factors impeding academic and career aspirations and compares the perspectives of students and faculty in a medical school.

METHODS

We focused on first and second-year medical (MBBS) students and teaching faculty in an international medical college offering a twinning program in India and Malaysia. Our investigation involved a comprehensive assessment of 25 at-risk factors through Likert-type questionnaires distributed to 250 MBBS students and 50 teaching faculty.

RESULTS

Our findings revealed distinct disparities in perceptions between faculty and students regarding mean scores of classroom engagement (p = 0.017), procrastination (p = 0.001), unrealistic goals (p = 0.026), emotional/behavioral problems (p = 0.008), limited key social skills (p = 0.023), and a non-supportive home environment (p = 0.001). These differences underscore the need for increased communication and understanding between faculty and students to address these risk factors effectively. In contrast, no significant disparities were observed among faculty and students' perceptions concerning mean scores of various potential at-risk factors, including academic unpreparedness, cultural/language barriers, individual guidance/mentoring, limited communication skills, racism/sexism, self-confidence, self-respect, self-concept, motivation, underprepared for current academic challenges, self-discipline, negative social network, negative peer culture, transportation time, college financial cost, college evaluation culture bias, broken college relationships, teaching methodology, and learning disabilities. However, varying degrees of influence were perceived by faculty and students, suggesting the importance of individualized support.

CONCLUSION

This study contributes to the academic community by shedding light on the multifaceted nature of at-risk factors influencing student success. It underscores the need for proactive measures and tailored interventions to enhance student retention in higher education and academic achievement, fostering a sustainable foundation for lifelong learning and growth.

[Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in adults]

The article presents a review of scientific publications devoted to the study of the characteristics of the clinical picture and the dynamics of the main symptoms in adult patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The authors present current data on the prevalence of this disease, leading clinical manifestations and the most common comorbid pathology. Research data on the impact of ADHD in adulthood on educational and professional activities are presented, and the economic and criminological aspects of ADHD are considered. The main methods of psychotherapeutic correction and pharmacological therapy are presented.

Testing the Impact of Depressive and Anxiety Features on the Association between Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms and Academic Performance among University Students: A Mediation Analysis

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with poor academic performance also among university students. This relationship may be made more complex by comorbid conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the mediating role of anxiety and depressive symptoms in the relationship between ADHD and academic performance. Data were drawn from the CAMPUS study (registration number: 0058642/21), an ongoing survey on university students’ mental health. Using a logit model, mediation analyses were carried out to test whether the relationship between ADHD symptoms (assessed by ASRS-5) and academic performance might be mediated by depressive (assessed by PHQ-9) and anxiety (assessed by GAD-7) symptoms. Our results showed that worse academic performance is associated with ADHD symptoms (p < 0.001). However, about 24% of the overall association between ADHD symptoms and academic performance was mediated by depressive symptoms (indirect effect: 0.065, 95%CI 0.022; 0.100), whereas the contribution of anxiety symptoms to the model was not significant. Along with the association between ADHD symptoms and poor academic performance, our findings highlight the key mediating role of depressive symptoms, which may be targeted with tailored support, ultimately improving both the academic performance and the well-being of university students with ADHD.

ADHD and Academic Success in University Students: The Important Role of Impaired Attention

OBJECTIVE

To improve on several methodological issues regarding current literature investigating the relationship between ADHD symptomatology and academic success in adults and examine the relative contributions of specific dimensions of ADHD symptomatology (i.e., inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity) to post-secondary academic success.

METHOD

A large sample of 3,688 post-secondary students were examined using a longitudinal design. The Conners' Adult ADHD Rating Scale (CAARS) was used to assess adult ADHD symptoms and academic success was assessed using students' official academic records (e.g., final GPAs and degree completion status).

RESULTS

Students with greater inattention symptomatology at the start of their academic program showed consistently poorer long-term academic success (i.e., lower GPAs, higher dropout rates), regardless of gender.

CONCLUSION

Inattention symptoms are the primary driver of the relationship between ADHD symptomatology and academic underachievement in adults. Post-secondary education institutions should target and prioritize educational programming for inattention symptoms of ADHD in at-risk post-secondary students.
