Abstract
The interaction between surfactants and cyclodextrins (CDs) is well known. Studies have focused mainly on destruction of micelles with CDs to release the encapsulated drugs. However, less emphasis has been given on understanding the formation of micelles with the CD encapsulated surfactants. We have used fluorescence spectroscopy to study the impact of CDs on micelles using a fluorophore that has been tactically designed as a reporter. This molecule has a pyrene moiety on one end and a cationic head group on the other so that the orientation of the compound can be prefixed on micelle formation in aqueous environment. We have observed that the CD encapsulated surfactants can form "hydrated micelles" that allow extensive penetration of water molecules toward the core. The mechanism for such a process involves inclusion of the hydrophobic surfactant tails within the CD core and participation of these inclusion complexes in micelle formation. The process could be controlled by tuning the concentration of CD. The degree of hydration varies as the micelles get more opened up due to the residence of the CDs inside them.

Abstract
Cyclodestrins (CDs) are cyclic oligosaccharides well-known for their ability to form host-guest inclusion complexes with properly sized compounds. They have been used for decades as chiral selectors as well as drug delivery systems within the frameworks of separation science and pharmaceutical science. More recently, their use has been extended to the field of extractive science under the stimulus of additional advantageous characteristics, such as low-price, negligible environmental impact, non-toxicity, as arising from the fact that natural CDs are starch degradation products. To abate their solubility in water and generate novel sorbents for solid phase extraction, the following approaches have been employed: (i) immobilization onto inert materials (silica, attapulgite, etc.); (ii) immobilization onto nanomaterials (magnetic nanoparticles, titanium oxide, carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide, etc.); (iii) polymerisation with specific cross-linkers to form the so-called CD-based nanosponges. Particularly promising are these last ones for their selectivity, mesoporous structure, insolubility in aqueous media and good dispersibility. This review offers a concise overview on the state of art and future prospects of CDs in this important sector of the analytical chemistry, offering a critical perspective of the most significant applications.

Abstract
A molecular modeling study of symmetrical conformers of α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrins in the gas and aqueous phases was carried out using the M06-2X density functional method, with SMD employed as an implicit solvation model. Eight symmetrical conformers were found for each cyclodextrin. Values of geometrical parameters obtained from the modeling study were found to agree well with those obtained from X-ray diffraction structures. A vibrational analysis using harmonic frequencies was performed to determine thermodynamic quantities. The GIAO method was applied to determine proton and carbon-13 NMR chemical shifts, which were then compared with corresponding chemical shifts reported in the literature. Hydrogen-bonding patterns were analyzed using geometrical descriptors, and quantum chemical topology was explored by QTAIM analysis. The results of this study indicated that four of the eight conformers studied for each cyclodextrin are the most populated in aqueous solution. These results provide the foundations for future studies of host-guest complexes involving these cyclodextrins. Graphical abstract δΔGsolvation: variation of free Gibss energy of solvation.

Abstract
The employment of cyclodextrin host–guest complexation to construct supramolecular assemblies with an emphasis on polymer networks is reviewed. The main driving force for this supramolecular assembly is host–guest complexation between cyclodextrin hosts and guest groups either of which may be discrete molecular species or substituents on a polymer backbone. The effects of such complexation on properties at the molecular and macroscopic levels are discussed. It is shown that cyclodextrin complexation may be used to design functional polymer materials with tailorable properties, especially for photo-, pH-, thermo- and redox-responsiveness and self-healing.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) are known to bind surfactant molecules below the surfactant critical micelle concentration (CMC); however, interactions of CDs with surfactant micelles (above the CMC) are not well understood. In particular, direct structural evidence of the location of CDs in the different subphases found in micellar solutions is lacking. We have utilized small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) with contrast matching to probe the localization of α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) and 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβ-CD) in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles in aqueous (D2O) solutions. SANS data from solutions containing either hydrogenated or deuterated surfactants were analyzed by considering three different scenarios pertaining to the localization of cyclodextrin, either all in solution or some in the micelle shell or some in the micelle core, and were simultaneously fitted using the core-shell prolate ellipsoid form factor and the Hansen-Hayter-based structure factor. The scenario that considered a fraction of CD to localize in the micelle core well described the SANS data from both hydrogenated and deuterated SDS-CD-D2O solutions, while the other two scenarios did not. Among the various structural and interaction parameters obtained from this analysis, it emerged that the micelle core consisted of up to ∼10% HPβ-CD or ∼16% α-CD with respect to the total number of molecules (surfactants and CDs) present in the micelle at 25 mM SDS, and up to 14% HPβ-CD or 28% α-CD at 50 mM SDS. This is the first study that provides direct evidence on the location of cyclodextrin in the core of surfactant micelles. An improved understanding of CD interactions with surfactants and lipids would enable better strategies for drug encapsulation and delivery with CDs.

Abstract
A simple and sensitive spectrofluorimetric method was developed for the determination of nitrite in environmental and food samples. The method was based on the selective reaction of o-phenylenediamine with nitrite in acidic medium to form benzotriazole, which exhibited strong fluorescence at 568 nm with excitation at 420 nm in alkaline medium. The detection limit and sensitivity of the proposed method were improved by hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin through complexation. The linear calibration range for nitrite was 0.04-0.8 μg mL(-1) with a detection limit of 13.6 ng mL(-1) (S/N=3.29). The relative standard deviation for ten determinations of 0.1 and 0.4 μg mL(-1) nitrite were 1.38% and 2.01%, respectively. Twenty-eight coexistent ions were examined, and no serious interference for most of ions was observed. The proposed method was successfully applied for the determination of nitrite in the water, sausage and soil samples with recoveries of 95.5-108.5%. The results were in good agreement with the recommended AOAC method.

Abstract
The complexation of astilbin with α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrin (CD) was studied by phase solubility test and UV-vis spectral titration. Complexation with CDs gradually decreased the absorbance of astilbin at 291 nm and obviously increased its water solubility. The formation constant (K(a)) between astilbin and the three CDs was calculated. The stability of astilbin complexes increased in the order α-CD < γ-CD < β-CD, attributed to the CDs' cavity size. Temperature studies showed that the K(a) value decreased along with the rise of temperature. The negative values of enthalpy and entropy during complexation indicated that the complexation process was enthalpy-controlled. In alkaline medium isomerization and decomposition of astilbin were found; however, the addition of CDs significantly improved its stability through complexation. The solubility of astilbin in β-CD microcapsules prepared by the freeze-drying method was enhanced by 122.1-fold, and its dissolution profile was improved.

Abstract
Miniaturized potentiometric sensors based on β-cyclodextrins (β-CDs) are described for determination of metformin (Mf) in pharmaceutical preparations and biological fluids. Electrode matrix compositions are optimized on the basis of the nature and content of sensing ionophore, ionic sites and plasticizers. Coated wire electrodes (CWEs) modified with heptakis(2,3,6-tri-O-methyl)-β-CD, sodium tetrakis(4-fluorophenyl)borate (NaTFPB) and 2-fluorophenyl 2-nitrophenyl ether (f-NPE), work satisfactorily in the concentration range from 10(-6) to 10(-1) mol L(-1) with Nernstian compliance (55.7 ± 0.4 mV per decade activity) and a detection limit of 8 × 10(-7) mol L(-1). Incorporation of β-CD as a molecular recognition element improved the electrode sensitivity and selectivity due to encapsulation of Mf into the β-CD cavity (host-guest interaction). The developed electrodes have been successfully applied for the potentiometric determination of Mf under batch and flow injection analysis (FIA). FIA allows analysis of 90 samples per h offering the advantages of simplicity, accuracy and automation feasibility. The dissolution profile for metformin pharmaceutical samples (Cidophage®) was monitored using the proposed electrode in comparison with the official spectrophotometric methods. Characterization of the formed Mf-β-CD inclusion complexes is discussed in detail.

Abstract
Inclusion complexes of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) with L- and D-phenylalanine (Phe) have been characterized in solution by fluorometry and in gas phase by semiempirical PM3 calculations. The unimolar stoichiometric ratio of both β-CD-L-Phe and β-CD-D-Phe complexes and the stability constants (K) were deduced from fluorometric titrations. The β-CD-L-Phe complex is more stable than the β-CD-D-Phe complex as indicated by the larger K values, 21.1 vs. 6.86 M(-1). This is consistent with the stabilization energies (ΔE(stb)) and inclusion geometries obtained from PM3 calculations. The β-CD-L-Phe complex with L-Phe residing in the central β-CD cavity and pointing its COOH group downwards to the O6 end has ΔE(stb)=-62.7 kJ mol(-1), whereas the β-CD-D-Phe complex with D-Phe placing at 3Å beneath the β-CD O4-plane and pointing its COOH group upwards to the O2/O3 end has ΔE(stb)=-53.3 kJ mol(-1). The unison of host-guest intermolecular hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic interactions and molecular deformations plays an essential role in forming and stabilizing the inclusion complexes. Our results show that the β-CD-L-Phe and β-CD-D-Phe inclusion complexes are relatively stable and differentiable, suggesting the applications of CDs in foods and drugs.

Abstract
A simple and sensitive method has been developed for simultaneous analysis of three catecholamines: dopamine (DA), epinephrine (EP) and norepinephrine (NE) in urine by capillary electrophoresis (CE) coupled with in-column fiber-optic light-emitting diode-induced fluorescence detection (ICFO-LED-IFD). Fluorescein isothiocyanate was used as the fluorescence tagged reagent for derivatization of DA, EP and NE. The CE conditions for separation of these catecholamines were systematically investigated. It was found that catecholamines could be more effectively separated by adding β-cyclodextin (β-CD) and acetonitrile (ACN) to a background electrolyte (BGE) of sodium borate. The migration times are 10.61, 10.83 and 11.14 min for DA, EP and NE, respectively and the catecholamines are completely separated within 11.5 min under the optimal condition of a BGE containing 10% v/v ACN, 20 mM β-CD and 20 mM sodium borate (pH 9.5), and an applied voltage of 13 kV. The relative standard deviations of migration time and peak area for these catecholamines are less than 0.16 and 2.0%, respectively. The limit of quantifications (LOQs) for DA, EP and NE are 3.5, 1.0 and 3.1 nM whereas the limit of detections (LODs) for DA, EP and NE are 1.0, 0.3 and 0.9 nM, respectively. Our proposed CE method provides low LOQ and LOD values. This CE-ICFO-LED-IFD methodology has been successfully applied to analyze catecholamines in human urine samples with good accuracy and satisfactory recovery.

Abstract
This review describes the synthesis, properties, and, in particular, biomedical and pharmaceutical applications of an upcoming class of polymeric networks and assemblies based on cyclodextrins (CDs). CDs are cyclic oligosaccharides composed of alpha-1,4-coupled d-glucose units, which contain a hydrophobic internal cavity that can act as a host for various, generally lipophilic, guest molecules. Because of this unique physicochemical property, commonly referred to as inclusion complex formation, CDs have often been used to design polymeric materials, such as hydrogels and nanoparticles. Polymeric systems based on CDs exhibit unique characteristics in terms of mechanical properties, stimuli-responsiveness, and drug release characteristics. In this contribution, first, an outline is given of covalently cross-linked polymeric networks in which CD moieties were structurally incorporated to modulate the network strength as well as the complexation and release of low molecular weight drugs. Second, physically assembled polymeric systems are discussed, of which the formation is accomplished by inclusion complexes between polymer-conjugated CDs and various guest molecule-derivatized polymers. Due to their physical nature, these polymeric systems are sensitive to external stimuli, such as temperature changes, shear forces and the presence of competing CD-binding molecules, which can be exploited to use these systems as injectable, in situ gelling devices. In recent years, many interesting CD-containing polymeric systems have been described in literature. These systems have to be optimized and extensively evaluated in preclinical studies concerning their safety and efficacy, making future clinical applications of these materials in the biomedical and pharmaceutical field feasible.

Abstract
This review deals with the applications of cyclodextrins as selectors for mycotoxin recognition. Complexation by cyclodextrins via formation of inclusion (host-guest) complexes induces significant changes in the physical and chemical properties of mycotoxins as guest molecules, effects that can be used in a variety of analytical techniques. Changes in chromatographic and electrophoretic properties and their applications to set up new separation methods are covered. Among these changes, a significant effect is the enhancement of the mycotoxin fluorescence upon inclusion, a phenomenon which provides a simple and convenient method to significantly increase the sensitivity of fluorescence-based trace analysis. The practical application of this phenomenon to set up new analytical methods is described. Studies on the mechanism of inclusion complex formation are also reported.

Abstract
A cyclodextrin-modified capillary zone electrophoresis method was developed for the separation and determination of three isomeric compounds (ursolic acid, oleanolic acid and betulinic acid), caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, rosmarinic acid, rutin and quercetin. Without the addition of beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) and methanol, the separation of these analytes was poorly resolved. These eight compounds, however, were well separated from each other within 20 min with a borax running buffer (40 mM of borax, pH 9.4) containing 2mM beta-CD and 4% (v/v) methanol at the voltage of 25 kV, temperature of 25 degrees C and detection wavelength of 210 nm. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of migration time ranged from 0.16 to 0.74% while those of the peak area ratios ranged from 2.17 to 4.61% for six determinations of the analytes at concentration of 10 and 25 microg mL(-1). The correlation coefficients of the calibration curves of the analytes were all >0.998, and the recoveries were from 96.8 to 103.6%. The method was successfully applied to determine these bioactive components in the samples of Prunella vulgaris L. and its beverage drink products. Our results reveal that only the isomeric compounds and rosmarinic acid could be detected in the spikes of P. vulgaris L.; other components were either too low to be detected or not present while only rosmarinic acid was detected in the beverage products.

Abstract
The complexation reactions of brilliant cresyl blue (BCB) with beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD), mono[2-O-(2-hydroxypropyl)]-beta-CD (2-HP-beta-CD), mono[2-O-(2-hydroxyethyl)]-beta-CD (2-HE-beta-CD), and heptakis(2,6-di-methyl) -beta-CD (DM-beta-CD) were investigated using UV-vis and fluorospectrometry. The complexation between BCB and CDs could inhibit the aggregation of BCB molecules and could cause its absorbance at 634nm gradually increasing. The fluorescence of BCB was also enhanced with the addition of CDs. The fluorescence enhancement was more notable in neutral and acidic media than in basic media. Hildebrand-Benesi equation was used to calculate the formation constants of beta-CDs with BCB based on the fluorescence differences in the CDs solution. The stoichiometry ratio was found to be 1:1. The complexing capacities of beta-CD and its three derivatives were compared and the results followed the order: 2-HP-beta-CD>2-HE-beta-CD>DM-beta-CD>beta-CD. The effect of temperature on the formation of BCB-beta-CD inclusion complexes has also been examined. The results revealed that the formation constants decreased with the increase of temperature from 1038.9 to 491.6l/mol. Enthalpy and entropy values were calculated and the values were -25.77kJ/mol and 35.04J/kmol, respectively. The thermodynamic measurements suggest that the inclusive process was enthalpic favor. The release of high-energy water molecules and Van der Waals force played an important role in the inclusive process.

Abstract
The construction, evaluation and analytical application of potentiometric sensors sensitive to vitamin B1 and vitamin B6 are reported. The solid contact electrodes were produced using beta-cyclodextrins as ionophores in a carboxylated poly(vinyl chloride) support matrix. Near Nernstian slopes (mV/decade) of 51.7+/-0.8, 60.6+/-0.6 and 61.1+/-1.4, within the intervals (M) of 1.0 x 10(-4) to 1.0 x 10(-1), 5.8 x 10(-5) to 1.0 x 10(-1) and 4.3 x 10(-5) to 1.0 x 10(-1) were obtained, for thiamine and pyridoxine I and II prepared membranes, respectively. A pH operational range of 6.5-8.5 for thiamine and 2-4.5 for pyridoxine electrodes was found. Assessment of selectivity coefficients toward a large number of inorganic cations and organic cations usually present in multivitamin formulations revealed good performance. Analysis of vitamins B1 and B6 in complex multivitamin drugs was achieved with recoveries within the intervals of 95.1-99.6% for thiamine and 95.1-102% for pyridoxine. Furthermore, the results enabled by the proposed procedure revealed good agreement with those provided by HPLC.

Abstract
A highly effective approach was developed for sensitive detection of organic substances in water. In order to achieve high sensitivity and selective detection for aromatic compounds, cyclodextrin (CD) hosts and imprinting effects were combined to fabricate binding sites within TiO(2) ultrathin layer. The electrode surface was modified with ultrathin TiO(2) gel film containing a 2:1 complex of beta-CD and bisphenol A (BPA), and then the BPA moiety was removed by washing. The resulting BPA-imprinted TiO(2)/beta-CD film showed specific and sensitive detection of BPA, as confirmed by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and cyclic surface-polarization impedance (cSPI) measurements. The high selectivity for BPA relative to structurally related guest molecules was estimated to be 1.6-3.4 at the guest concentration of 2x10(-7)M, and was considered to arise from the synergic effect of the binding site.

Abstract
The combination of supramolecular chemistry and MS has not only been fruitful in the field of gas-phase fundamental studies of host-guest complexes and supramolecular assemblies. Mass spectrometric analysis has also benefited from the ability of supramolecular systems to behave as pseudophases in which solutes partition from the bulk solvent phase. Supramolecular systems-based extraction and concentration schemes and separation techniques have been widely used in different fields of analytical chemistry and are ideally suited for coupling with MS. This review describes the present status of the application of supramolecular chemistry in mass spectrometric analysis and includes topics such as the use of coacervative liquid-liquid extraction and hemimicelle/admicelle-based SPE of organic compounds prior to chromatography and electrophoresis. It also discusses the recent advances in enantioselective analysis using CD in electrophoresis- and chromatography-MS. The potential and analytical challenges of these approaches in environmental and bioanalytical chemistry, where one can expect significant developments in the future, are outlined.
