Quantification of Metal(loid)s in Lubricating Eye Drops Used in the Treatment of Dry Eye Disease

The aim of the study was to evaluate the presence of metal(loid)s in lubricating eye drops used in the treatment of dry eye disease. The concentrations of Al, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Pb, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Se, V, and Zn were determined in 19 eye drop samples using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) values for the quantified elements ranged from 0.0002-0.0363 (mg/L) and 0.0007-0.1211 (mg/L), respectively. High values of concentrations of Al (2.382 µg/g), As (0.204 µg/g), Ba (0.056 µg/g), Cd (0.051 µg/g), Co (1.085 µg/g), Cr (0.020 µg/g), Cu (0.023 µg/g), Fe (0.453 µg/g), Mg (24.284 µg/g), Mn (0.014 µg/g), Mo (0.046 µg/g), Ni (0.071 µg/g), Pb (0.049 µg/g), Se (0.365 µg/g), V (0.083 µg/g), and Zn (0.552 µg/g) were quantified in samples of eye drops with and without preservatives. The concentrations of As (5 samples) and Cd (3 samples) were higher than those allowed by the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia for impurities (parenteral use). The value of Co content (µg/g) in a sample was higher than the value established by the International Council for Harmonization of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH Q3D (R2)) in the parenteral route. The daily eye drop instillation exposure (µg/day) was below the values from the parenteral-permitted daily exposure (PDE) set by the ICH Q3D guideline (R2). The presence of heavy metals in eye drops is an alert to regulatory agencies in several countries so that control and inspections can be carried out.

Kinetics and Optimization of Metal Leaching from Heat-Resistant Nickel Alloy Solid Wastes

Recycling waste from the production and consumption of heat-resistant alloys to return them to production is an urgent task due to the high cost of the components contained in these alloys. The kinetics and conditions of the acid leaching process of the grinding waste of a heat-resistant nickel alloy are studied depending on the composition of the acid solution (H₂SO₄, HCl, HNO₃, and their mixtures) at room temperature to boiling point temperature and various acid concentrations (1.5 to 3.0 mol/L), ratios of waste to solution (1:10 to 3:10), fraction sizes (0.04-1 mm), and contact duration (1 to 120 h). The linearization of experimental data by the Gray-Weddington, Gistling-Brownstein, and Kazeev-Erofeev equations showed that the rate of the leaching process was influenced by both the chemical reactions between sulfuric acid and metals included in the grinding waste and the diffusion of reagents through the film of reaction products and undissolved impurities. Optimal conditions for acid dissolution of the grinding waste have been established to obtain the maximum degree of extraction of the main component of the alloy, nickel. The processing of powder particles with a size of less than 0.1 mm should be carried out in a solution of sulfuric acid with a concentration of 3.0 mol/L at a temperature of 100 °C for 6 h with a ratio of solid to liquid phases of 1:10. The reported results are very important for industry personnel to recover metals and for environmentalists to treat the alloy waste.

The influence of anthropogenic activities on heavy metal pollution of estuary sediment from the coastal East China Sea in the past nearly 50 years

Historical records of eight heavy metals (HMs: Cu, Zn, Cr, Ni, Pb, As, Hg and Cd) were analyzed in two dated sediment cores collected from the coastal East China Sea (Meishan Bay, MSB) to investigate the influence of anthropogenic activities on estuary sediment from 1972 to 2019. The sedimentary records of HMs in the two cores reflected the development of economy and change of energy consumption in China's east coastal areas. The contents of most HMs in sediments had no change or showed a downward trend before the 1980s. After the 1980s, the contents of HMs showed an increasing trend, mainly because of the rapid development of aquaculture, industry, and agriculture. The distribution of HMs outside the bay (OB) was mainly affected by industry, shipping, and agriculture (vegetable planting), while HMs in sediments inside the bay (IB) was affected by shipping, agriculture, and aquaculture. Principle component analysis (PCA) showed that Cd, Cr, and Ni could be attributed to industrial discharge, while As, Cu, Pb, and Zn were associated with shipping, agriculture, and aquaculture. Sediments were slightly polluted with Cd (I_geo:0.10-0.71, CF:1.90-7.74) and Ni (I_geo:0.08-0.92, CF:1.25-12.55), and seriously polluted with Hg (I_geo:0.95-1.76, CF:13.43-85.65). This study provides insights for the local governments to raise awareness of HM pollution in the coastal East China Sea and formulate corresponding pollution control measures.

Application of Capillary Electrophoresis for Determination of Inorganic Analytes in Waters

Aside from HPLC and GC, capillary electrophoresis (CE) is one of the most important techniques for high-performance separations in modern analytical chemistry. Its main advantages are the possibility of using different detection techniques, the possibility of in-capillary sample processing for preconcentration or derivatization, and ease of instrumental miniaturization down to the microfluidic scale. Those features are utilized in the separation of macromolecules in biochemistry and in genetic investigations, but they can be also used in determinations of inorganic ions in water analysis. This review, based on about 100 original research works, presents applications of CE methods in water analysis reported in recent decade, mostly regarding conductivity detection or indirect UV detection. The developed applications include analysis of high salinity sea waters, as well as analysis of other surface waters and drinking waters.

Fabrication of fluorescent carbon dots-linked isophorone diisocyanate and β-cyclodextrin for detection of chromium ions

A water-soluble fluorescent carbon dots (FCDs) from cellulose was prepared using one-pot simple hydrothermal method. In this work, a novel fluorescent probe material, fluorescent carbon dots-linked isophorone diisocyanate and β-cyclodextrin (FCDs-IPDI-CD), was prepared with FCDs, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as raw materials. The structure and morphology of FCDs-IPDI-CD were characterized using the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The as-prepared FCDs-IPDI-CD exhibits excellent emission property and high stability. The fluorescence of the FCDs-IPDI-CD could be quenched by Cr(VI) ions, and the results indicate that FCDs-IPDI-CD can be used as an effective fluorescent probe for the detection of Cr(VI) ions with good selectivity and sensitivity in an aqueous solution. The influences of environment factors (such as pH, reaction time) on relative fluorescence intensity were studied. According to the optimum conditions, a new sensitive method detecting Cr(VI) ions was established. The method has been successfully applied to detect Cr(VI) ions in water and soil samples with satisfactory results.

Germanium nanocrystals as luminescent probes for rapid, sensitive and label-free detection of Fe3+ ions

Luminescent water-soluble germanium nanocrystals (Ge NCs) have been developed as a fluorescent sensing platform for the highly selective and sensitive detection of Fe3+ via quenching of their strong blue luminescence, without the need for analyte-specific labelling groups. The amine-terminated Ge NCs were separated into two discrete size fractions with average diameters of 3.9±0.4 nm and 6.8±1.8 nm using centrifugation. The smaller 3.9 nm NCs possessed a strong blue luminescence, with an average lifetime of 6.1 ns and a quantum yield (QY) of 21.5%, which is strongly influenced by solution pH. In contrast, 6.8 nm NCs exhibited a green luminescence with a longer lifetime of 7.8 ns and lower QY (6.2%) that is insensitive to pH. Sensitive detection of Fe3+ was successfully demonstrated, with a linear relationship between luminescence quenching and Fe3+ concentration observed from 0-800 μM, with a limit of detection of 0.83 μM. The Ge NCs show excellent selectivity toward Fe3+ ions, with no quenching of the fluorescence signal induced by the presence of Fe2+ ions, allowing for solution phase discrimination between ions of the same element with different formal charges. The luminescence quenching mechanism was confirmed by static and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopies, while the applicability for this assay for detection of Fe3+ in real water samples was successfully demonstrated.

Fluorescent carbon nanoparticles for the fluorescent detection of metal ions

Fluorescent carbon nanoparticles (F-CNPs) as a new kind of fluorescent nanoparticles, have recently attracted considerable research interest in a wide range of applications due to their low-cost and good biocompatibility. The fluorescent detection of metal ions is one of the most important applications. In this review, we first present the general detection mechanism of F-CNPs for the fluorescent detection of metal ions, including fluorescence turn-off, fluorescence turn-on, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) and ratiometric response. We then focus on the recent advances of F-CNPs in the fluorescent detection of metal ions, including Hg(2+), Cu(2+), Fe(3+), and other metal ions. Further, we discuss the research trends and future prospects of F-CNPs. We envision that more novel F-CNPs-based nanosensors with more accuracy and robustness will be widely used to assay and remove various metal ions, and there will be more practical applications in coming years.

Determination of inorganic anions in saliva by electroosmotic flow controlled counterflow isotachophoretic stacking under field-amplified sample injection

Under a strong counter-electroosmotic flow, five salivary inorganic anions, bromide, iodide, nitrite, nitrate and thiocyanate were determined by field-amplified sample injection in combination with isotachophoretic stacking. Separation and concentration conditions were investigated. A terminating electrolyte, 5mM borate, was added in the sample. Under the optimized conditions, Br(-), I(-) and SCN(-) were concentrated online using 150mM HCl-Tris buffer at pH 7.8 in a bare fused capillary, providing more than ten thousand of sensitivity enrichment compared with normal injections. The relative standard deviations (RSDs, n=5) were less than 1% in migration times, 8% in peak areas. Using direct UV detection at 200nm and 226nm, the limits of detection (LODs, S/N=3) were of 0.002-0.01μM. Unfortunately, NO2(-) and NO3(-) could be observed in purified or deionized water. Therefore, a low dilution factor was applied to saliva samples. Due to the matrix effect, samples were injected in a shorter time, and standard addition method was applied to determine all the five inorganic anions in saliva. The RSDs of the migration times and peak areas were in a range of 0.2-0.4% and 3.0-4.0%, respectively. The LODs were 0.2-2.0μM. The salivary levels of the anions obtained were in accord with the reference data. The external standard method can not be adapted to real samples due to biases caused by electrokinetic injection and errors from high dilutions.

Capillary electrophoresis of inorganic ions: An update

This review as a sequel of three earlier similar reports gives a summary of the progress and significant methodological developments, starting from 2002, in the use of capillary electrophoresis (CE) for inorganic ion analysis. As substantiated by the illustrative number of relevant references, improvements in sensitivity achieved both in and outside a CE system, advances in manipulating the separation selectivity, novel hardware configurations, and system performance innovations are continually being reported over the review period. Specifically viewed are the recent advancements in elemental (bio)speciation analysis, which remains one of the most fertile areas of CE research, as well as in three recently booming research topics: contactless conductivity detection, separations on microchips, and transient isotachophoretic preconcentration. A state-of-the-art picture of technique's potentialities within the field of interest presented here demonstrates that CE has become recognized and is growing in acceptance as a reliable alternative to traditional analytical methods such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Overview of the status and applications of capillary electrophoresis to the analysis of small molecules

The status of capillary electrophoresis (CE) in the analysis of small molecules is reviewed and summarised with the illustrative use of recent literature references. Examples are cited in this review which demonstrate that CE is now a recognised and established technique in many industries, law courts and government regulatory agencies. Each of the principal areas of CE application in small molecule analysis are covered in sections which highlight the recent developments and possibilities within that area. Application areas include the analysis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, chiral separations, and forensics is covered. This is an update to a previous review article [J. Chromatogr. A 856 (1999) 443] and covers papers published between 1999 and 2002. Technical developments and improvements, such as the advent of capillary array instrumentation for increased sample throughput, and improved detection options are described. Overall it is concluded that CE has become a recognised and established technique in many areas and is still within a period of development of both instrumentation and application which will continue to expand usage.

Analytical separations of lanthanides and actinides by capillary electrophoresis

The separation of lanthanide and actinide elements belongs to one of the most challenging tasks of the separation science, due to a great similarity in their physical and chemical properties. The electrophoretic separation can be accomplished in the presence of suitable complex-forming agents, from which alpha-hydroxyisobutyric acid (HIBA) has been used most often. In the most effective capillary electrophoretic mode--capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE)--a complete separation of lanthanide ions can be accomplished within a few minutes. Various electrophoretic methods can be relatively easily adopted for the determinations of individual lanthanide elements in certain kinds of technical materials, concentrates, precursors, etc., where the high speed and low costs of analysis characteristics of capillary electrophoresis (CE) may be advantageously exploited. Electrophoretic techniques may also be employed for speciation studies, especially for examinations of the behavior of actinides in the environment.
