A zinc oxide nanorods/molybdenum disulfide nanosheets hybrid as a sensitive and reusable electrochemical sensor for determination of anti-retroviral agent indinavir

This work aims to develop an electrochemical sensor for the reusable and selective detection of trace levels of indinavir (IDV) as an anti-retroviral drug by using zinc oxide nano-rods/molybdenum disulfide nanosheets on a screen-printed electrode (ZnO NRs/MoS₂ NSs/SPE). Quantitative IDV detection was achieved using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The assay specificity was illustrated using interfering species and exhibited high specificity toward the IDV. The developed displayed a wide dynamic range, from 0.01 to 0.66 and 0.66-7.88 μM in Britton-Robinson (B-R) buffer, with a 0.007 μM limit of detection. The fabricated ZnO NRs/MoS₂ NSs/SPE electrode exhibited high sensitivity, stability, good reproducibility, and repeatability towards the sensing of IDV. It turned out that the hybrid electrochemical sensor's sensing performance was remarkably improved due to the synergistic effect between MoS₂ NSs and ZnO NRs, where the former affords a large active surface area and quick electron transfer. The reported sensor provides a new alternative for electrochemical detection of IDV and could expand the applications of metal nanoparticles in emerging technologies for monitoring drugs in real samples.

A Review of Electroanalytical Techniques for Determination of Anti-HIV Drugs

Until now after the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was discovered as the then tentative aetiological agent of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), exactly 25 anti-HIV compounds have been formally approved for clinical use in the treatment of AIDS. These compounds fall into six categories: nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs: zidovudine, didanosine, zalcitabine, lamivudine, abacavir, stavudine, and emtricitabine), nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NtRTIs: tenofovir), nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs: efavirenz, nevirapine, delavirdine, and etravirine), protease inhibitors (PIs: ritonavir, indinavir, saquinavir, nelfinavir, amprenavir, lopinavir, fosamprenavir, atazanavir, tipranavir and darunavir), fusion inhibitors (FIs: enfuvirtide), coreceptor inhibitors (CRIs: maraviroc), and integrase inhibitors (INIs: raltegravir). The present paper submitted the use of various electroanalytical techniques for the determination of anti-HIV drugs. This paper covers the time period from 1990 to 2010 including voltammetric techniques that were reported. Presented application concerns analysis of anti-HIV drugs from pharmaceutical dosage forms and biological samples.

Quality Control of Protease Inhibitors

Protease inhibitors (PIs) are potent competitive inhibitors of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) widely used in the treatment of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and prescribed in combination with other antiretroviral drugs. So far ten PIs were approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of HIV infection. In this mini review, quality control methods of each PI are discussed on the basis of analytical techniques published in the literature. Special attention is given to summarize the LC methods described for the analysis of the selected PIs in both drug substances and products with the available literature till date.
