Control of chloride ion corrosion by MgAlOx/MgAlFeOx in the process of chloride deicing

Adding a corrosion inhibitor to the chloride deicing salt can prevent the corrosion and pollution of Cl^-, which is very important. Layered double hydroxide (LDHs), calcined at high temperature is used as adsorbents to remove various anionic contaminants, and it can reduce the freezing point of solution after adsorbing anions. Therefore, this paper reports the use of calcined LDHs as corrosion inhibitors in deicing salts, which are denoted as MgAlO_x or MgAlFeO_x depending on the preparation element. By analyzing the removal efficiency and the freezing point of MgAlO_x and MgAlFeO_x to Cl^-, the feasibility of the study was determined. Resulted that the removal efficiency to Cl^- of MgAlFeO_x at low temperature (0 ± 2 °C) and room temperature (25 ± 2 °C) was higher than that of MgAlO_x, reaching 39.4% and 85.60%, respectively. And the freezing point of MgAlFeO_x was lower than that of MgAlO_x, the value was -12.0 °C. At the same time, we also found that CaCl₂-MgAlO_x and CaCl₂-MgAlFeO_x significantly reduced the corrosion of carbon steel and concrete compared with chloride salts, and CaCl₂-MgAlFeO_x had the lowest corrosion degree. Hence, MgAlFeO_x was chosen as the corrosion inhibitor in chloride deicing salt. The metal molar ratio, synthesis temperature, and calcination temperature for preparation of MgAl/MgAlFe-LDHs were determined by XRD and TG-DSC analysis that were 9/2/1, 120 °C, and 500 °C, respectively. Characterization methods such as Zeta, XRD, XPS, BET, and SEM were used to study in detail the characteristic changes of MgAlFe-LDHs and MgAlFeO_x after Fe³⁺ was added, and the mechanism of corrosion inhibitors was further determined that was achieved by adsorption and neutralization.

Preparation of MgAlFe-LDHs as a deicer corrosion inhibitor to reduce corrosion of chloride ions in deicing salts

This material consists of a double hydroxide consisting of Mg, Al, Fe in a 9:2:1 M ratios, which was synthesised by hydrothermal method under constant pH conditions. The products were calcined at 500 °C for use as a deicing corrosion inhibitor, which breaks through the problem that the traditional corrosion inhibitor itself doesn't have the capability of deicing. The raw material of Al and Fe was extracted from the red mud by acid leaching. Characterization by XRD, FTIR, BET, XPS, SEM and TEM revealed that the interlaminar structure of the collapsed double-layered hydroxide material after high temperature calcination was regained by adsorbing Cl^-. Cl^- was filled between the layers of double hydroxide and existed by chemical adsorption. By measuring the freezing point of mixed deicing salt and the ability to melt snow and deicing, the freezing point of the inhibitor was found. When the solution concentration was 40 wt%, the freezing point of the mixed deicing salt reached -27.6 °C. Corrosion inhibitors can reduce the amount of CaCl₂ when used in combination with anhydrous CaCl₂. In addition, the determination of the corrosion rate of carbon steel and the resistance to salt freezing of concrete has revealed that the corrosion inhibitor can adsorb Cl^- and reduce the content of free Cl^- at low temperatures. Therefore, corrosion inhibitor plays a significant role in reducing the amount of Cl^- used, the corrosion rate of carbon steel, and the salt-freezing resistance of concrete.

Unexpected difference in phenol sorption on PTMA- and BTMA-bentonite

The comparison of phenol sorption on phenyltrimethylammonium (PTMA)- and benzyltrimethylammonium (BTMA)-bentonite shows a clear difference as far as phenol sorption isotherms are concerned. For PTMA-bentonite the sorption isotherm is of a straight-line character which results from simple partitioning of phenol between the aqueous and organic phases sorbed on the bentonite surface. For BTMA-bentonite the isotherm has a convex shape, characteristic of physicochemical sorption. For the first time a three-parametric model, including the dissociation constant of phenol pK(a), distribution constant of phenol Kd(phen) and phenolate anion Kd(phen)(-) between the aqueous phase and the bentonite phases is used for the evaluation of phenol sorption on organoclays with pH change. The model shows that the values of Kd(phen) are higher than those of Kd(phen)(-) for all investigated initial phenol concentrations. The inspection of the FTIR spectrum of BTMA-bentonite loaded with phenol in the regions 1300-1600 and 1620-1680 cm(-1) shows the features of pi-pi electron interaction between the benzene rings of phenol and the BTMA cation together with the phenol-water hydrogen bond strengthened by this interaction.

Configurations of the bentonite-sorbed myristylpyridinium cation and their influences on the uptake of organic compounds

Variations in the configuration of a sorbed myristylpyridinium (MP+) surfactant cation with a loading level in bentonite were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR); the attractive force from the clay basal surfaces to the sorbed MP+ and water molecule in the interlayers was estimated by thermogravimetric analysis (TG-DTG). At low loading levels (i.e., < CEC), MP+ sorbed mainly by cation exchange to clay basal surfaces to form tightly-adhered "organic films" (i.e., flat-layer). With increasing MP+ loading, sorbed MP+ gradually changed into a less confined "phase-like medium" (i.e., paraffin-type structures) via London attraction forces. Attractive forces between the mineral basal surfaces and the sorbed MP+ varied with the interlayer spacing and the stacking of MP+. Sorption of phenol and naphthalene to the resultant MP(+)--clay was a function of the configuration of MP+ aggregates on clay surfaces. At low MP+ densities, the sorbed MP+ film acted as an effective adsorbent for organic compounds. The carbon-normalized solute distribution coefficients (K(sf)) were exceptionally large and increased with MP+ densities up to approximately 340 (phenol) and approximattely 15000 mL g(-1) (naphthalene). At high MP+ loadings, the MP+ aggregates transformed into a partition-like medium, and the K(sf) values decreased sharply and leveled off. Nonetheless, because of the enhanced MP+ packing density within the clay interlayer, the solute K(sf) with a confined sorbed MP+ phase exceeded the corresponding aqueous micelle-water partition coefficients (k(mc)).
