NEUTRALIZATION OF THE AGENT CAUSING LEUKOSIS AND SARCOMA OF FOWLS BY RABBIT ANTISERA

Neutralizing antibodies against fowl tumor agents can be produced in rabbits by injection of heavy materials obtained from chicken tumor. Similar sediments from normal chicken spleen produce no neutralizing antibodies. The complement-fixing antibodies produced by both materials are unrelated to the neutralizing antibodies.

The injection of tumor extracts and their active protein fractions into rabbits induced the formation of precipitins and neutralizing antibodies. When the major portion of proteins in the tumor extract had been eliminated it induced the formation of neutralizing antibodies, but not of precipitins. The tumor agent, more highly purified by removal of the viscous fraction, did not induce precipitins, and only 2 out of the 15 sera gave any evidence of neutralizing bodies. After the removal of the major portion of protein, the extracts showed insufficient interaction with the sera to fix complement.

On the Influence of Spirochaetal Infection on Rous-Sarcoma in the Fowl

Attempts to cure general paralysis of the insane by infection with Spirochaeta duttoni have been made by Plaut and Steiner (1919), Mühlens and Kirschbaum (1921). Solomon, Berk, Theiler and Clay (1926) have reported upon the employment of Spirillum minus (Spirella morsus-muris) for the same purpose. The experiments referred to met with an encouraging measure of success; for the ultimate results have been comparable with those following therapeutic inoculation with malarial parasites.
