Therapeutic Interventions for HIV Infection and Chronic Viral Hepatitis

Towards the design of combination therapy for the treatment of enterovirus infections

We report here on a comparative study of the activity of 10 enterovirus inhibitors against poliovirus 1, enterovirus 71 and human rhinovirus 14. Three of the selected molecules (Pleconaril, BTA-798 and V-073) are in clinical development. The in vitro antiviral activity of pairwise combinations of inhibitors indicated that most combinations resulted in an additive to slightly synergistic antiviral activity. However, the combination of ribavirin with a nucleoside polymerase inhibitor resulted in a pronounced antagonistic effect.

Antiviral therapy for hepatitis C virus recurrence after liver transplantation in HIV-infected patients: outcome in the Bonn cohort

Recurrent hepatitis C is a major cause of mortality in HIV/hepatitis C virus (HCV)-co-infected patients after orthotopic liver transplantation. We report sustained viral clearance in all four transplanted HIV/HCV-positive patients treated with pegylated interferon/ribavirin. Early therapy after HCV recurrence, tailoring treatment duration to the individual decline in HCV-RNA and the management of side effects are key factors for improved efficacy. At experienced centres interferon treatment is a valuable option for recurrent hepatitis C in HIV-positive patients.

Medical management of HIV-hepatitis C virus coinfection in injection drug users

Several million people inject drugs of abuse and, as a result, are coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). The treatment of this coinfected drug-abusing population is fraught with many problems such that clinicians and other health care providers have to determine whether patients should be treated first for drug addiction, for HIV/AIDS, or for HCV infection or simultaneously treated. These proceedings present the incidence and prevalence of coinfections with HIV and HCV in high-risk populations and discuss the underlying pathophysiology of coinfections and the problems and strategies of managing the treatment of coinfections among people who also inject illicit drugs. In addition, the expert panel recommended further research to determine the best possible treatment regimens applicable to injection drug users coinfected with HIV and HCV.
