[Inhibitory capacity of Lactobacillus spp. against pathogens involved in foodborne diseases]

The genus Lactobacillus daily generates a growing interest among microbiologists and technologists, who try to discover new biotechnological applications and probiotic properties. The main goal of this study was to evaluate the inhibitory capacity of Lactobacillus spp. against pathogens (Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp., Staphylococcus aureus) involved in foodborne diseases. For this purpose, samples were collected at different stages of the pork production chain. Seventy eight bacterial strains were isolated. Twenty seven (27) of these strains (37.18%) had genotypic and phenotypic characteristics corresponding to Lactobacillus spp. whereas 85.18% of them showed inhibitory capacity. These data showed that the studied strains represent a potential alternative to inactivate foodborne pathogens and thus provide safe food to consumers.

Action of AferBio (fermented food) in a rat inflammatory model

BACKGROUND

AferBio is a fermented prebiotic food that contains beta-glucans, which are oligosaccharides capable of stimulating the proliferation of beneficial bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible effects of this functional food on the inflammatory response in rats.

METHODS AND RESULTS

AferBio (900 mg/kg) inhibited edema formation by 34% compared to the control group. We also observed inhibition of the primary and secondary reactions of inflammation after the injection of Freund's adjuvant in the animals fed AferBio. Daily administration of AferBio for 6 d inhibited the formation of granulomatous tissue by 37%; additionally, inhibition of 31% of neutrophil migration downstream of carrageenan-induced peritonitis was observed. An ulcerogenic potency assay revealed that indomethacin produced a higher number of lesions compared to treatment with AferBio. Anti-inflammatory potency analysis showed that indomethacin inhibited 39% of carrageenan-induced edema but produced a higher number of lesions. However, animals treated with AferBio had areas of hyperemia without ulcerative lesions and 21% of edema was inhibited.

CONCLUSION

Based on the results obtained in this study, AferBio appears to have anti-inflammatory activity during acute and chronic inflammatory processes.

The prophylactic use of probiotics in the prevention of radiation therapy-induced diarrhea

Cancer treatment regimens that include radiation therapy (RT) to the abdominal region for cervical, ovarian, prostate, sigmoid, or colorectal cancer potentially disturb the colonization resistance of the indigenous gut flora, causing RT-induced diarrhea, enteritis, and colitis in more than 80% of patients with cancer. One approach for the prevention of RT-induced diarrhea is the use of probiotics. Randomized clinical trials have demonstrated efficacy of probiotic preparations VSL #3 and Lactobacillus casei DN-114 001 in decreasing the incidence and grade of RT-induced diarrhea. Oncology nurses and advanced practice clinicians are in a position to interpret research findings related to RT-induced diarrhea, enteritis, and colitis and to apply evidence-based practice principles in patients with cancer receiving RT to promote positive outcomes.

Evidence-based review of probiotics for antibiotic-associated diarrhea and Clostridium difficile infections

Probiotics are living microbes taken to confer a health benefit on the host. Although probiotics have a long history of use in Europe and Asia and have been on the U.S. market for over 14 years, there is still confusion about how to effectively use them. The use of probiotics for the prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) and the treatment of Clostridium difficile infections (CDI) has been tested in randomized controlled clinical trials. This paper will review the evidence supporting probiotic therapy for these two diseases and also review the advantages and disadvantages of probiotics. The advantages of probiotic therapy include multiple mechanisms of action against pathogens, the ability to interact with the host's natural defense systems, survival to the target organ and a good risk to benefit ratio. Disadvantages of probiotics include lack of standardization for clinical trial designs, variations in regulatory standards, poor quality control for some products and infrequent serious adverse reactions. Overall, probiotics offer a promising strategy for the prevention and treatment for AAD and CDI.
