Life-History Modeling Reveals the Ecological and Evolutionary Significance of Autotomy

A statistical approach to assess interspecific consumptive competition and functional redundancy in ephemeral resource uses using camera traps

Camera traps have been widely used in wildlife research, offering significant potential for monitoring species interactions at ephemeral resources. However, raw data obtained from camera traps often face limitations due to observation censoring, where resource consumption by dominant animals may obscure potential resource use by less dominant animals. We extended time-to-detection occupancy modeling to quantify interspecific consumptive competition and redundancy of ecosystem functions through consumption between two species, while accounting for observation censoring. By treating resource use by rival species as censored data, we estimated the proportion of resources potentially used in the absence of rival species and calculated the loss caused by the rival species, which is defined as "Competition Intensity Index." We also defined the Unique Functional Contribution, which represents the net functional loss when a species is removed, calculated by excluding the contribution potentially substituted by the other species. We also considered resource degradation and computed the quantity of resources acquired by each species. This established framework was applied to predation data on bird nests by alien squirrels and other predators (Case 1) as well as scavenging on mammalian carcasses by two carnivores (Case 2). In Case 1, the introduction of squirrels significantly affected the breeding success of birds. Although nests were being preyed upon by native crows also, our model estimated that Unique Functional Contribution by the squirrels was 0.47. This means that, by eradicating the squirrels, the reproductive success of the birds could potentially increase by as much as 47%. In Case 2, the Competition Intensity Index for foxes was 0.17, whereas that for raccoon dogs was 0.46, suggesting an asymmetric effect of resource competition between the two species. The frequency distribution of wet mass available to the two species differed significantly. This approach will enable a more robust construction of resource-consumer interaction networks.

A new species of the genus Paradistomum (Platyhelminthes: Trematoda) from Iwasaki's snail-eating snake Pareas iwasakii, with a note on morphological variations of Paradistomum megareceptaculum (Tamura, 1941)

Dicrocoeliid trematodes were detected from Iwasaki's snail-eating snake Pareas iwasakii in Iriomote Island, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, and described as a new species Paradistomum dextra n. sp. in the present study. This new species can be distinguished from the type series of the other members of the genus based on size of eggs and morphological characteristics of body, oral and ventral suckers, and reproductive organs. However, the new species was hard to distinguish from Paradistomum megareceptaculum infecting snakes in Japan, including Iriomote Island where is the type locality of the new species, because it is closely similar to some part of the broad range of morphological variations in P. megareceptaculum. On the other hand, a partial sequence of 28S ribosomal DNA clearly distinguished these two species. Moreover, the new species' host snake Pareas iwasakii is reported to exclusively feed on land snails while host snakes of P. megareceptaculum feed on small vertebrates, indicating that the new species is also ecologically different from P. megareceptaculum. We also redescribed P. megareceptaculum based on adults sampled in this study and past studies to record the morphological variations of this species.

The type of leg lost affects habitat use but not survival in a non-regenerating arthropod

Finding shelter and surviving encounters with predators are pervasive challenges for animals. These challenges may be exacerbated after individuals experience bodily damage. Certain forms of damage arise voluntarily in animals; for instance, some taxa release appendages (tails, legs, or other body parts) as a defensive strategy ("autotomy"). This behavior, however, may pose long-term negative consequences for habitat use and survival. Additionally, these putative consequences are expected to vary according to the function of the lost body part. We tested the effects of losing different functional leg types (locomotor or sensory) on future habitat use and survival in a Neotropical species of Prionostemma harvestmen (Arachnida: Opiliones) that undergo frequent autotomy but do not regrow limbs. Daytime surveys revealed that both eight-legged harvestmen and harvestmen missing legs roosted in similar frequencies across habitats (tree bark, mossy tree, or fern), and perched at similar heights. Mark-recapture data showed that harvestmen that lost sensory legs roosted in tree bark less frequently, but on mossy trees more frequently. On the contrary, we did not observe changes in habitat use for eight-legged animals or animals that lost locomotor legs. This change might be related to sensory exploration and navigation. Lastly, we found that recapture rates across substrates were not affected by the type of legs lost, suggesting that leg loss does not impact survival. This potential lack of effect might play a role in why a defensive strategy like autotomy is so prevalent in harvestmen despite the lack of regeneration.
